A stripped-down neo-noir with a twist, this feature debut for filmmaker Alex Merkin began as a 2005 short (starring Adrian Grenier, which can be found online here). Grenier didn't return, but Mike Vogel takes his place as Julian, a young man who races to a seedy hotel where his best friend's wayward fiancée (Brittany Murphy) and another man have aroused the suspicions of his pal, who's holed up "across the hall" with a bottle of whiskey and a gun.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

While everybody and their grandmother is busy figuring out who the villain in "Spider-Man 4" is, few have stopped to acknowledge that the film's very existence wasn't always a certainty — not with Tobey Maguire's involvement, at least.
The actor spoke with The Boston Globe about his upcoming fourth stint as Peter Parker under the directorial eye of Sam Raimi, a collaboration that nearly didn't happen in the first place. According to Maguire, his decision to return for "Spider-Man 4" wasn't an easy choice to make.
"It's not that I was reluctant," he said. "For me, it's a big process to decide whether or not to do a role. ... I have to wake up in the morning and feel like I can't wait to get to work. I've got to feel Ok about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It's a big commitment."

Tobey Maguire has addressed previous rumor by mentioning that he was unwilling to return to the fourth installment of "Spider-Man" film franchise, "Spider-Man 4". "It's not that I was reluctant," he said in a recent interview with The Boston Globe.
"For me, it's a big process to decide whether or not to do a role," the father of two children added. "I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can't wait to get to work. I've got to feel okay about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It's a big commitment."
During the interview, the 34-year-old also shared about his willingness to develop his Spider-Man character and his alter ego Peter Parker. "Hopefully I'll be able to evolve the character in a new direction," Maguire said. "He'll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward »

Tobey Maguire once made people question about whether or not he would return to "Spider-Man 4". Now that he has decided to reprise his role as Spider-Man and his alter ego Peter Parker in the next installment, the actor has opened up about his plan with his character in the superhero film franchise.
"Hopefully I'll be able to evolve the character in a new direction," Maguire said in an interview with The Boston Globe. "He'll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor."
During the interview, he also denied rumor that he was reluctant to take part in another "Spider-Man" film, saying "It's not that I was reluctant." Maguire then explained, "For me, it's a big process to decide whether or not to do a role.... I »

Actor Tobey Maguire recently told The Boston Globe that he hopes that his new movie, Brothers, will shed some light on one of the frequently overlooked problems facing veterans returning from combat: post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd). In the movie, Maguire plays Sam Cahill, a soldier who experiences the effects of Ptsd after returning home from Afghanistan, where he had been held captive by the Taliban. To prepare for the role, Maguire spent a great deal of time doing research and meeting with soldiers who had suffered with Ptsd.
People don't like to talk about it because it's like pulling back the curtain on another side of humanity. The people who've gone through these things, there's a different look in their eyes. They just know a different side of being a human. We can only imagine this stuff, but these people have been through terrible ordeals and have seen and lived »

So here's how it goes, according to Slash Film. Uruguay's own 30 year old Federico Alvarez makes a short called Panic Attack and plugs it up on Youtube. Sam Raimi is impressed by what Alvarez was able to do with a computer and a low budget (and probably a shaky-cam). Through his company Ghost House Raimi, according to reports, puts up a budget of $30-40 million for Alvarez to make a full-scale feature film. Alvarez and his girlfriend/co-writer are now living in L.A. rent-free, and have nice, shiny new cars. And $1 million dollars funding just to write the script.
Sounds great, right? Raimi, a former low budget filmmmaker who's gone on to be a Hollywood hotshot with the Spider-man franchise, giving back to another low budget filmmaker who will hopefully follow the same path. Hollywood normally doesn't work like this, so this is refreshing.
If only Alvarez' Youtube special were anything special. »

About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Tobey Maguire had small roles in respected films like The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys, then also got his major break in a high budget franchise, winning the role of Spiderman. Jake Gyllenhaal came to public attention through his role in sleeper Indie hit Donnie Darko, then hit the big time through a combination of big budget popcorn in The Day After Tomorrow, and critically acclaimed drama in Brokeback Mountain. Next week in the Us, these three actors, firmly A-List, come together for Jim Sheridan’s brothers.

The "Spider-Man 4" rumor mill was in overdrive the last few weeks, with unconfirmed reports flying around the 'Net about which characters would factor into the film and who would play them. Several widely circulated casting rumors focused on potential actresses taking the role of Black Cat, and while we already put it to readers to tell us which rumor was your favorite, we also ran them by another very important person in the "Spider-Man" movie universe: Peter Parker himself, actor Tobey Maguire.
"People tell me about [the rumors], because I'm involved in the project — so yeah, I hear things," Maguire told MTV News during a press event for his upcoming film "Brothers."
"Mostly, it's just kind of interesting," he added. "I don't pay too much mind to it. I'm just glad people are talking about it and excited about it."
So, with Maguire keeping mum about the potential characters and casting for "Spider-Man 4, »

Jennifer Hudson isn't just starring in a Winnie Mandela biopic, she's singing the title track too. Leona Lewis is doing warbling duties on James Cameron's Avatar. Make sure to leave before the credits roll ...
As the credits rolled on the first Spider-Man movie in an east London cinema sometime in May 2002, it would have taken a disaster of Green Goblinesque proportions to dampen my ebullient mood. As a childhood fan of the comic books and a lover of all things Sam Raimi, the superhero blockbuster was like manna from heaven to my geekboy soul.
And then, suddenly, as if I were being mocked from on high, Chad Kroeger started singing. Yes, the same Chad Kroeger who fronted abominable Nirvana-lite quintet Nickelback, he of the appalling rocker ringlets and grunge-ain't-dead facial hair. In earnest tones, Chad bawled out lyrics about heroes and eagles' wings, worlds full of killin' (and blood spillin' »

Natalie Portman personally thinks that her co-star in upcoming movie "Brothers", Jake Gyllenhaal, is perfect yet unattractive. The 28-year-old star jested in a recent interview that the boyfriend of actress Reese Witherspoon is flawless, before jokingly adding, "Too bad he's ugly".
"Jake is the kind of guy who can do a spot-on impression of someone you work with that will make you giggle," Natalie pointed on Jake's positive sides. "He knows home remedies for distressed hair. He can build a cabinet from scratch. He plays guitar and has a great voice. Kids and dogs love him. He loves his mom and sister and girlfriend."
While Natalie spoke about what she thinks of Jake, her co-star Jake talked about one of the reasons he agreed playing in the movie, revealing that he wants to prove that he and co-star Tobey Maguire are not identical looking. He recalled, "People have very often »

The actress loved hanging out with the actor – who is dating Reese Witherspoon – while filming their new movie ‘Brothers’ and praised his sense of humour and hair care advice, but insisted she doesn’t find him attractive. On top of the already set-in-stone release date of May 6th, 2011 for the highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4, we’ve heard word of a shooting start date of March, 2010. That word came just last month from Spidey director, Sam Raimi, who was quoted as saying, “We’re hoping that it’s the first week in March.” Since then speculation and rumors around Spider-Man 4 have run rampant, particularly regarding who will be the villain(s) of the film, as well as who would play the villain of the Black Cat, if the character is indeed to be included (as rumored) in the next film.
To reiterate what Raimi said about the start date, Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire, recently echoed the statement. HitFix reports that while at a press conference for his intense-looking upcoming “brother drama” entitled, well, Brothers, Maguire revealed that Spider-Man 4 will begin filming in February or March 2010, which places »

Who will be the villain(s) for director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4? Well, there might be a few clues coming our way...
After the recent flurry of speculation over various actresses allegedly in consideration for the role of Black Cat, the franchise's star Tobey Maguire has given his views.
A poll here on The Geek Files (see right) is so far showing Lizard as the fans' top choice, followed by Black Cat and Mysterio. Bottom of the heap is the vampire-like Morbius, perhaps because we're seeing enough bloodsuckers in film and TV at the moment.
So what does Maguire have to say? He told MTV: "I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains. I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a very personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff."

Back in October, director Sam Raimi hinted that one of the next villains to face down Peter Parker in Spider-Man 4 might be Dr. Curt Connors, Aka "The Lizard." In response to an MTV fan poll that picked The Lizard, Raimi said: I love the Lizard. There's a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors.
While Raimi's comments may not be an indication that The Lizard will feature prominently in Spider-Man 4, recent comments Tobey Maguire has made to MTV lend more weight to that possibility.
I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know — I like them as villains. I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a really personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff.
Production on Spider-Man 4 is slated to begin in March.

Just how much clout does Tobey Maguire have with the upcoming Spider-Man 4? Whether it’s a little or a lot, at least the star has an opinion about which Spider-Rogues should be in the next film, and he’s not afraid to share it.
During a press conference for his latest movie Brothers, Maguire was asked to name his preference among The Lizard, Mysterio, and Carnage. The trio had topped a recent MTV fan poll for which villain should appear in Spider-Man 4.
According to Ace Showbiz, Maguire was more enthusiastic about The Lizard and Mysterio — a human-reptile hybrid and a special effects master, respectively. "I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know — I like them as villains," Maguire said.
Part of the reason might be Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s relationship with the Lizard’s alter-ego, Dr. Curt Connors, which he noted has great story potential. »

In another occasion, the depicter of Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man has talked about his preference for the lead villain in fourth "Spider-Man". "I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains," Maguire said when asked to choose among The Lizard, Carnage, and Mysterio, who became the top three in MTV's poll of the next Spider-Man's nemesis.

Tobey Maguire may not know the histories of all the villain picks in Splash Page's recent "Spider-Man 4" poll, but he does know what director Sam Raimi likes. The Lizard came in first during our fan voting, with Carnage taking second and Mysterio landing in third place. Maguire reacted to all three choices, but clearly has an opinion on which picks are most likely.
"I'm more familiar with Lizard and Mysterio, and I don't know -- I like them as villains," Maguire told MTV News. "I think they're great, and Lizard obviously has a very personal relationship with Peter Parker, so we often will go towards that kind of stuff."
Carnage, meanwhile, falls a little off of his radar, but that doesn't mean he hasn't thought about Peter Parker facing off against the symbiotic spawn.
"I'm not that familiar with Carnage," the actor explained. "I'm aware of Carnage, but I »
