Elfman Replaced On "The Wolfman"

6 hours ago | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Famed "Batman", "Spider-man", "Men In Black" and "Wanted" composer Danny Elfman has been given the boot from the upcoming big budget "The Wolfman" remake according to Cinemusic.net and The Playlist. What's strange is Elfman had apparently already written an entire score for the new horror movie said to be similar to Wojciech Kilar's haunting work in "Bram Stocker's Dracula", however the film's constantly shifting release dates mean that Elfman simply doesn't have the time to stay with the project and finish his work. Instead, Paul Haslinger ("Underworld", "Shoot 'Em Up") has been brought onboard to do the film's soundtrack and no doubt give it a more grungy, rock-based sound. In a strange bit of similitude, Haslinger was a member of Tangerine Dream - the influential 80's electronic... »

Comic book writer/artist Al Davison on what was wrong with The Dark Knight, Superman Returns and Watchmen

13 November 2009 3:31 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.

This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.

Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.

I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

Al's been writing and drawing comics for 25 years. He is working on the Doctor Who comic (as seen in the image pictured right), which was launched in July, and recently »

That James Franco Appearance On 'General Hospital' Really Is Performance Art

13 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Depending on your age, James Franco is either "the stoner from 'Freaks & Geeks'" or "the stoner from 'Pineapple Express.'" Or Harry Osborn I suppose, if you've seen the little-known comic book adaptation of "Spider-Man."

What you might not realize is that Franco has also dipped his toes into the world of avant-garde filmmaking. He's allied himself with one artist in particular: John Carter, who operates under the professional name Carter. The two collaborated on a 2008 film, "Erased James Franco," an hour-long piece in which Franco re-creates past performances -- his own and others, particularly Rock Hudson and Julianne Moore -- without providing any context. It seems that this Franco/Carter partnership is also what led to the actor taking his soon-to-begin guest gig on TV soap opera "General Hospital."

The revelation came from a recent interview Carter gave to Movieline. "It was an idea that I posed to him, »

Bicycle Messengering Gets Intense With David Koepp's 'Premium Rush'

12 November 2009 3:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When was the last time you recall seeing an actual bicycle messenger? Unless you live in a densely populated, car-hating metropolis, chances are rather slim that you ever see someone on a bike with a package under their arm, ducking and diving all manner of obstacles before screeching to a halt in front of a skyscraper and racing inside to drop off said package just in the nick of time. Which is why it is simultaneously bizarre and fascinating to me that David Koepp would pick the high-stakes world of two-wheeled courier services as the frame for his next directorial project.

What's even more fascinating is the scale Premium Rush, which I am 99% positive is the name of a Capri Sun flavor I used to drink in the '90s, is set up to be. Sony is bankrolling the production, which Variety says they see as "a big-budget actioner, much »

Stan Lee Talks Twitter With MTV Splash Page

12 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Splash Page: It's no secret that many creators in and around the comics scene have embraced Twitter these days—and many of them make regular appearances in our daily Twitter Report. Perhaps one of the most surprising creators with a regular presence in the Twitterverse, however, is one of the industry's most beloved icons: Stan Lee.

The co-creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, the X-Men and countless other popular characters, the 86-year-old Lee has taken to Twitter with surprising ease. A typical 24 hours with @SmilinStanLee offers readers a host of witty observations, tongue-in-cheek commentary and self-deprecating humor that reveals why Stan "The Man" Lee is one of comics' living legends.

I spoke with Lee about his arrival on the Twitter scene, why he's taken to the microblogging tool so easily, and why communicating with fans on Twitter actually has him feeling like he's gone back in time.

The Five: Actresses Who Should Play Black Cat in 'Spider-Man 4'

12 November 2009 2:07 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Earlier in the week it was revealed that Rachel McAdams was among the names being considered for the role of Felicia Hardy (aka Black Cat) in Spider-Man 4, which begins production early next year. Since then, a number of different sources have confirmed that Sam Raimi and Co. are indeed looking at several women for the part of Black Cat, who, like Batman's Catwoman, was a sexy cat burglar who bonded with Spider-Man over their shared costumed connection.   Apparently, however, that's not the story they're going with in Spidey 4 – and Felicia Hardy will instead be tied to Peter Parker through her father, who becomes the new head of The Daily Bugle (and a possible villain). Doesn't seem all that inspiring – and it may be different when it finally hits the screen –...

David Koepp Speeds Towards a Premium Rush

12 November 2009 10:24 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Apparently, David Koepp likes the directing chair. Although this year’s Ghost Town broke a four-year hiatus from directing, Koepp is getting behind the camera again, this time for Premium Rush. Unfortunately for music fans, it will not be a behind-the-music look at everyone’s favorite Canadian rockers. Instead, Premium Rush will tell the story of a twentysomething bike messenger who innocently picks up an envelope from Columbia University. Of course, a dirty cop wants the envelope and will stop at nothing to get it. Though Koepp has written fantastic movies like Jurassic Park and Spiderman he has directed bad films like Stir of Echoes and Secret Window. Which will Premium Rush be? It’s too soon to tell but Variety is reporting that it will be a big-budget action flick so at the least it will have things that go boom.

The week in geek: will Kick-Ass be a 21st-century superhero?

12 November 2009 10:06 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

So what do you think of the Kick-Ass trailer? And is it good or bad that Steven Spielberg's Oldboy remake is apparently not going to happen?

You would be forgiven for thinking that now the superhero-loving public has got Watchmen – the holy grail of superhero movies – out of its system, the appetite for everyday Joes who dress up as masked vigilantes might have been sated. Not so, or at least that's what Matthew Vaughn and his team will no doubt be hoping in advance of their release of Kick-Ass next year.

The film is based on a Mark Millar comic book about a New York teenager who decides to don a costume and head out on to the streets to fight crime. Just as in Watchmen, the absence of real superpowers proves a major drawback in his efforts to take out the bad guys, but the comic also features »

James Franco, 'Donnie Darko' And Hilarious One-Liners Collide In This 'General Hospital' Promo

12 November 2009 8:30 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I have nothing against soap operas. I spent many of my younger, carefree college days planted on the couch -- and missing class, incidentally -- watching "Days of Our Lives." So I can understand, even respect, a person's need to watch their stories. That said, I can't help but chuckle at the sight (and sound) of "Spider-Man" and "Pineapple Express" star James Franco in this "General Hospital" promo.

Yes, that is Gary Jules' cover of "Mad World," made famous by its appearance in Richard Kelly's "Donnie Darko," playing behind the action. And Franco does indeed smile smugly while uttering the words "Violence sells... that's what I'm all about, right?"

I don't have words. One of the producers here in the office -- I'm not naming names, to protect the innocent -- is a fan, and she just tried catching me up on the "Gh" goings-on leading up to Franco's arrival. »

David Koepp Will Write/Direct That ‘Quicksilver’ Remake You’ve Been Wanting

12 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

That may not be technically accurate... Per Variety, David Koepp will write and direct a new film called Premium Rush about a bike messenger with a valuable package who gets chased throughout New York City by a dirty cop. The film "is being conceived as a big-budget actioner, much like the films Koepp is known for penning, and will feature the kind of elaborate chases associated with a William Friedkin pic." Koepp is "known for penning" quite a few films, but his big actioner ones include Angels & Demons, Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds, Spider-Man, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. That's an incredibly mixed bag quality-wise, so there's no telling if the new film will be any good. Koepp has directed before, but all of those films (including the under-rated Ghost Town) have been much lower-budgeted affairs. It's obviously way too early in the process to seriously question Koepp's intention »

Sam Raimi is auditioning for The Black Cat role in Spider-Man 4

12 November 2009 3:44 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Sam Raimi has reportedly been auditioning female actresses to play The Black Cat in 'Spider Man 4'.

The director has met with actresses Rachel McAdams and Romala Garai, but is still casting the femme fatale role for the female character, who is expected to become a new love interest for Spider Man.

A source told website HeyUGuys.co.uk: "There are a number of actresses currently being considered for the role, but this at least confirms that Hardy is going to be in the film."

The character has reportedly been modified from the original daughter of a cat burglar to be the daughter of the new editor of the Daily Bugle - the paper where Spiderman is a photographer - and the source suggested that he could also be a villain.

Meanwhile Bruce Campbell recently confirmed he will have "a major part" in the next film in the series and »

Having most recently worked on the Ricky Gervais-starrer Ghost Town, David Koepp has lined up his next directing project, helming Premium Rush for Sony's Columbia Pictures.

Known for being one of Hollywood's highest-paid screenwriters, with creditsd on Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull and Spider-Man, Koepp also penned the script for the upcoming film with his frequent collaborator John Kamps.

David Koepp to Direct Bike Messenger Action Film Premium Rush

11 November 2009 9:06 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

David Koepp is best known as one of Hollywood's highest paid screenwriters (and one of Spielberg's scribes). His screenwriting credits include everything from Toy Soldiers, Jurassic Park, and Carlito's Way, to Panic Room, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For the last decade he's been trying to make the transition into feature film directing. He made his debut with the promising Stir of Echoes, but has since followed up with some lackluster efforts, the 2004 Stephen King adaptation Secret Window and the 2008 Ricky Gervais supernatural romantic comedy Ghost Town. Honestly, I think Koepp is a much better screenwriter than he is a filmmaker, and that's not saying much considering the abundance of lackluster screenplays he's been involved with in the last 10-12 years. With that kind of intro, you must be really interested in his next directorial effort (yes, that was ... »

Who will die? Check out James Franco's General Hospital promo

11 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The James Franco experiment has begun on General Hospital. Actually, we have now learned that the movie actor, best known for Spider-Man and Milk and The Pineapple Express, has decided to do a two-month guest role on the ABC soap opera as part of a project he's doing with a filmmaker named Carter.

Franco and Carter are making a documentary called Erased James Franco. His guest turn on 30 Rock may also be part of the movie. Nobody knows for certain.

One thing I do know for certain is that ABC is taking Franco's appearance on GH very seriously. They're working around his schedule, giving him a strangely interesting character to play, and promoting it like mad.
