Dialogue-driven films don't work when they're always p***ed, 18 August 2001
6/10

Much like, for example, the brilliant SATURDAY NIGHT, this one's a dialogue-driven piece, with David Field and Syd Brisbane having the only talking parts throughout the entire film. They do a superb job as two alcoholic no-hopers who, in the depths of despair, are offered the chance to part-own and race a greyhound by an off-screen, very dodgy-sounding "businessman". From there it falls away: it has some very funny sequences, but is essentially an almost depressing drama that hits closer to the truth than it ever should have... Field and Brisbane are brilliant, but the film is little more than average, unless you're up to listening to ninety minutes of slurred drunken speech from two washed-up fortysomethings who keep doing dumb things. Well worth a look, but not quite worth the $8.50 (heehee, I'm a student) admission. 6/10
