This TV movie came up in 1979 as a teaser for an upcoming feature film, Yamato 4.
Animation is TV grade, nothing special, but still manages to look quite okay, and yes, those silly sound effects have finally been watered down a bit. Viewer-friendly; only a hour and a half long, this is potentially one of my favourite Yamato installments. It tells the story of Desslar and his love interest, coupled with several silly scenes of new Yamato crew trying to operate the spaceship causing general mayhem. Anyway..
As I already mentioned, this movie is plot-wise and spends a great deal of time on character development, particularly on the character of Desslar. Thankfully, fight scenes are quite brief and melodramatic scenes are once again pulled off quite well.
It's a shame that this movie wasn't produced with higher artistic merits and better direction, since it could've easily been one of the best Yamato movies produced. Such as it is, it's definitely worth a look.
