I first saw "Ellen Foster" about eight years ago, around the time of it's television premiere. I remembered it as quite powerful, but didn't know quite what to expect upon viewing it again - after all, I was only eleven at the time. Actually, I appreciated it much more than I originally did, as I was unaware of the talent involved. The film is quite moving, due in no small part to the talent of director John Erman.
Jena Malone has gone on to bigger films since this one, but this is a great showcase of her early talent. Actors Ted Levine and Julie Harris are quite impressive as well. Levine throws himself full force into the role of the abusive father, a part which could have (but doesn't) come off badly. Harris is brutal and intense, and very, very unlikable.
(Note: look out for then-newcomers Amanda Peet and Timothy Olyphant as a young hippie couple)
