Review: Help! I’m Being Held Captive in the Six-Hour Mini-Series "The Prisoner"!

13 November 2009 8:09 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

***Warning*** This review contains some mild spoilers about AMC's The Prisoner.

You people owe me.

When people find out that I review movies and television for a living, they often say something like, “Wow, that’s some cushy deal – getting paid to watch TV for a living!”

What they don’t understand is that I often have to watch things that I’m not necessarily interested in, and I have to watch them all the way through, even if they stink.

Even if it’s a six-hour mini-series.

Such is the case with The Prisoner, AMC’s highly publicized remake of the classic and influential 1960s U.K. series about a man who finds himself being held captive in a mysterious “village” where everyone has a number rather than a name.

AMC's remake airs this Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights at 8 Pm. And it’s bad.

But most of you »

The view: Richard Kelly enters The Twilight Zone with The Box

13 November 2009 6:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Rod Serling's ghostly shadow looms large over the latest film from the director of Donnie Darko – but what's the problem? It's a hell of a show to take cues from

In certain eyes, the impending release of The Box, the third film from the still more-or-less boyish Richard Kelly, will be notable mostly as a trial by public opinion for its creator. This is, after all, quite the crossroads for a director whose deservedly beloved debut Donnie Darko proposed him as the emo David Lynch before its follow-up Southland Tales instantly made a lot of us stick a large and hasty question mark beside that judgment. Much therefore rides on his latest project. But, for me, the mixed response to the movie so far – out in the Us last week, released here next month – has been interesting not just for its implications about Kelly's future, but because almost every »

Paul Giamatti: 'I'm clearly not Brad Pitt'

12 November 2009 1:27 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Paul Giamatti tends to play moody defeatists and rageful misanthropes. Which is just the way he likes it

'I'm clearly not Brad Pitt, and I'm never going to be Brad Pitt," says Paul Giamatti, closely inspecting his coffee cup in a Polish restaurant in a leafy neighbourhood of Brooklyn. "But I don't think I'd want to be Brad Pitt, you know? So that's Ok."

This is partly just a reference to Giamatti's "character-actor" looks, but also to something deeper: a sense of composure, of being comfortable in one's own skin, that the archetypal Hollywood star exudes but both Giamatti and his characters tend to lack. "You know that thing where you can just fuckin' stand there and people can't take their eyes off the person? I don't have that weight of charisma," he explains. "That's not me. If I just stand there, it's going to be boring. You're going to »

'Star Trek' DVD: Prepare for a deleted-scene geek-out

10 November 2009 12:30 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Good news, Trek fans. The wait is almost over. Just seven more days until J.J. Abrams' two-disc special edition of Star Trek comes to DVD. Naturally, that means the usual loving assortment of behind-the-scenes extras, including a commentary track from Abrams and his producing and writing teams. But the nuggets you'll want to check out first are the nine deleted scenes. If you can't wait, here's a breakdown of the lost goodies. Scene 1: Spock's birth. This was originally supposed to be the first shot in the movie. A touching and tender scene set on the Vulcan home planet »

Between Dimensions: Solaris (1972)

10 November 2009 11:09 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Between Dimensions [1] is a continuing feature that examines science-fiction on the screen in all of its forms: big or small, good or bad. Bring an overnight bag to your couch. This star trip takes awhile. Solaris is about first contact and tells its story most authentically. It is sprinkled with tantalizing hints of an incomprehensible alien presence and deftly threaded with some of humanity’s long-standing existential issues. These factors combine to create the conditions that in turn perplex, humble, and threaten the movie’s cast of characters. Be warned however. Solaris is also the ultimate litmus test of a viewer’s attention span. Transformers this is not. For better or worse, Solaris tells its story (from a novel by the great Russian sci-fi writer, Stanislaw Lem) in almost real time. For better because you are cocooned in layer after layer of allegory and allusion. This style ensures that you »

The Final Seven Celebs Are In It to Win It on 'Dancing with the Stars'

2 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

It was the samba, foxtrot and the quickstep that heated up the dance floor on Monday night's "Dancing with the Stars," with the professional partners dressed in costumes designed by the stars. Former NFL star Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova kicked off the night's performances with the foxtrot. Head judge Len Goodman declared, "I am going to be honest. The first couple of weeks, I would have been happy to see the back of you. I am happy you stuck around." Bruno Tonioli added, "I have to say your musicality has improved. It was light and you looked like you enjoyed yourself. An improvement. Way to go." Carrie Ann Inaba told him, "I honestly do not know how you do this. Tonight's performance was gracious. It was fluid." The couple was awarded its highest score of the season: 23 out of 30 points. Showbiz legend Donny Osmond and his partner Kym Johnson danced second with the quickstep. »

The Best New York City Horror Movies

Mia Farrow in Polanski's Rosemary's Baby

Writer Nick Carr of the Huffington Post site lists his choices for the best horror films set in New York City. We only take issue with the inclusion of Wait Until Dark, which is more a thriller than a horror film. On the other hand, Carr is canny enough to include the original Planet of the Apes, although, again, this is a sci-fi film rather than a horror movie. Check out the list and see if you concur with Carr's opinion. »

Happy Birthday, Lady Liberty: Wake-Up Video

28 October 2009 7:20 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

There are a handful of symbols that are associated with the United States of America: The White House, the Washington Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge, that new football stadium in Dallas. But perhaps the most enduring icon that sums up this country — both practically and ideally — is the Statue of Liberty. It's a little ironic, then, that it came from France. It was a gift from that country to celebrate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and to symbolize the friendship between the two nations that was established during the American Revolution. Standing at 151 feet tall (for a total of 305 feet with the pedestal), the Statue of Liberty represents the promise of the United States as a land of opportunity and a place to start over. On this day in 1886, President Grover Cleveland dedicated the monument. On the same day 50 years later, President Franklin Roosevelt re-dedicated »

How to dress like The Mad Hatter this Halloween

20 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Alice in Wonderland might not be released until next year, however Tim Burton’s re-imagining (isn’t that what he called his remake of Planet of the Apes?) of the Lewis Carroll classic is already earning excited buzz (we featured a replica costume item as last week’s eBay find, see Related Content right). And with good reason. It boasts Burton’s customary gothic quirkiness, a stellar cast including Burton regulars (and incidentally his partner) Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp and for fashion followers, costumes from the inimitable Colleen Atwood. And though Aiw might still be months away, Atwood’s latest bizarre and imaginative screen outfits promise to be a hit this Halloween, so much so that Diy fashion site ThreadBanger.com has produced a video guide to creating your own version of the outfit sported by Depp’s Mad Hatter. George Tuska, 1916 - 2009

16 October 2009 10:45 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Pioneer comic book and newspaper strip artist George Tuska died yesterday at the age of 93.

It’s hard to imagine an artist with a greater pedigree. Beginning in 1939, George worked on such features as The Avengers, Black Terror, Buck Rogers, Captain America, Captain Marvel (both Fawcett and Marvel), Challengers of the Unknown, Doc Savage, Green Lantern, The Hulk, Iron Man, Justice League of America (a.k.a. “The World’s Greatest Superheroes” newspaper stip), Luke Cage, Planet of the Apes, Scorchy Smith, Sub-Mariner, Superboy, Superman, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, Teen Titans, Uncle Sam… and that merely scratches the surface.

George was a gentle man who once had taken the extraordinary step of punching out well-known wiseass cartoonist Bob Powell while working in the Eisner-Iger shop. Will Eisner said Powell, as brilliant an artist as anybody in that hallowed shop, absolutely deserved it. The stuff of legend. »

FX Lab: A Conversation with Andrew Clement

15 October 2009 11:26 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From working FX on SNL and Letterman to creating monsters for Dark Shadows, Andrew Clement has some tales to tell. Recently-wrapped on the reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street (for which he redesigned Freddy Krueger), Jason Anders caught up with Clement for a candid conversation about his world of Creative Character Engineering.

Ja/Fangoria: So let's begin with your work as a make-up artist for NBC's Saturday Night Live; tell me about the work you did for the show, how you became involved, the memories you have being around the cast of actors, and which seasons you were involved in.

AC: I wish I had been involved in the first few seasons of SNL, it was such a fertile time for the show. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’m not quite that old. As it is, I watched those shows in Jr. High and High School, and now I have the DVD’s. »

Stargate Universe 1.03 "Air Pt.3″ Recap

11 October 2009 12:41 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The newly minted crew of the Destiny were spread in three different areas Friday night: the ship, Earth, and on a barren desert landscape. In other words, there was enough drama for an infinite amount of galaxies. I will break the action up the best way I can since we had flashbacks/hallucinations, Earthbacks, and present drama on the ship and offworld.

Flashback (Hallucination): Son of a Preacher Man

Some might say that Lt. Scott was hallucinating and some might consider it a flashback, but I am going to take it as a bit of both since the scene gave back story and dissolved into sand at the end of it.

In the flashbacks, Lt. Matthew Scott sits in a church crying to a priest about how he has failed the priest, the Lord, and himself. The priest later questions him about his love for a young woman. Scott »

Discuss: What's Your Favorite Remake?

2 October 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We often bash the neverending flurry of remakes, and frankly, it's hard not to. Nestled in between the possible gems are many projects that wrench the magic out of the original they're supposed to love. But luckily (especially in this remake-laden movie world) they're not all bad. In fact, sometimes they can be downright delightful, thought-provoking, or even awe-inspiring.

One of the top contenders, of course, is The Fly. The 1958 version was wildly popular and loved, yet David Cronenberg was able to sweep in and concoct a film that people rave about to this day. It remains one of the only movies able to rip through my adoration of the original and find a secure spot on the appreciation shelf. Beyond that, there are further remake chills with memorable projects like Dawn of the Dead and Cape Fear, plus a bunch of more mainstream-friendly, and beloved, remakes. Ocean's 11, anyone? »

Classic Cameos: Charlton Heston in 'Wayne's World 2'

22 September 2009 5:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

This is what cameos are all about. Sometimes an actor performs a cameo in heavy disguise, and it's up to the viewer to "find" him or her. But the best cameos are the ones that take into account the personality of the performer/writer/athlete/politician, and then make some kind of wry comment on it. If you're wondering how an upstart like Mike Myers could have coaxed the Oscar-winning legend and Shakespearian actor Charlton Heston into a less-than-one-minute scene in a comedy sequel, just check out this clip. I doubt any actor could have resisted.

The joke here is doubly cool. For a time, Heston was considered a kind of parody of a great actor. He had appeared in many big, important classics, including The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur and Touch of Evil, but before long, he was the star of some big-budget drive-in movies like Planet of the Apes »

'Jennifer's Body' bad boy Adam Brody takes the EW Pop Culture Personality Test

18 September 2009 10:58 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In Jennifer's Body (in theaters today), Adam Brody, our favorite geek hero from The O.C., tries evil on for size. He plays the lead singer of a devil-worshipping emo band that attempts to sacrifice Jennifer (Megan Fox) because they think she's a virgin and it will bring them greater fame. (He doesn't do his own vocals: "My singing voice is still going through puberty," he says. "They gave me a singing lesson or two, and it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s not anything anyone would choose to hear.") Unfortunately, since Jennifer's not pure, a demon takes over her body and starts feeding on high school boys. Almost as dangerous as Megan Fox with a supernatural appetite? The EW Pop Culture Personality Test. Brody submitted to one and had a couple of friends over in case he needed backup... Entertainment Weekly: The best concert you’ve ever seen? »
