Soulpepper Theatre Presents Parfumerie 11/26-12/24

28 October 2009 11:14 AM, PDT | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today announced that the company's production of Parfumerie will run November 26 - December 24, 2009, at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

Soulpepper debuts a new adaptation of Miklós László's touching romantic comedy from Canadian writers Adam Pettle and Brenda Robins.

One of the world's most beloved stories, Parfumerie has inspired three movies (The Shop Around the Corner, The Good Old Summertime, and You've Got Mail) and one musical (She Loves Me). Set at Christmas time, two clerks in a Budapest perfume shop despise each other, while unknowingly exchanging love letters as anonymous penpals.

Morris Panych returns to Soulpepper (Blithe Spirit, 2007) to direct the unlikely pair of secret admirers, Patricia Fagan (Rosie) and Oliver Dennis (Azstalos), with Maev Beaty as Miss Ratz, Kevin Bundy as Kadash, Jeff Lillico as Arpad, Noah Reid as Jansic, Brenda Robins as Miss Molnar, Michael Simpson as Sipos, »

What are Your Guilty Pleasure Movies, but Don't Like to Admit It?

14 October 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I thought the response to my "Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen? " post was excellent, and on top of everything so many of you said, several new questions came as a result. One of them, offered by 'Steve Mott', asks the question in the headline: Do you have guilty pleasures you don't like to admit to?

Steve lists his guilty pleasure as 10 Things I Hate About You, a film I personally love and was just discussing recently with a friend when the topic of "Where the hell did Julia Stiles go?" came up. To that effect I also love Save the Last Dance and to answer the Stiles question before someone gets smart in the comments, yes, she has the Bourne films and wrote and directed a film starring Zooey Deschanel and has also been doing plenty of work on stage. Moving along...

Turned On, Tuned In: Femme Filmmakers

5 October 2009 6:37 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

What's turning me on this week? Women. Women filmmakers, to be exact. With the limp release of Drew Barrymore's Whip It, there's been an increase of chatter in my circles about lady directors. It's often highly difficult for me to enter into a discussion about women making movies, because the lion's share of cinephiles and critics that I spend my time with are men. No offense, guys. It's just that the conversation often devolves into cheap -- albeit funny -- pot-shots and cat calls about women in front of and behind the camera. I have no problem, on face, with these discussions. They're fun, funny, and occasionally enlightening. But what I really want, what I think would really be worth the breath, is an honest-to-goodness discussion on female filmmakers. Contemporary cinema would be flat without all types of voices, women's being among the most important. But often women aren't expected to be, or »

The Motion/Captured Review: 'Julie & Julia' offers simple story of self-definition

10 August 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Nora Ephron has made a long and successful career out of making films I don't much care for, and more power to her.  Honestly, probably the film she directed that I most liked before this was "This Is My Life," her early '90s debut.  Her work before that as a writer, I'm a little more fond of, like "My Blue Heaven" or "When Harry Met Sally" or, most notably, "Heartburn," an affable if not entirely successful film based on her own real life.  It's not that I hate her movies... "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless In Seattle" seem entirely successful at... »

No Food Was Faked in the Making of This Movie

5 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

The most anticipated movie of August - at least in certain foodie/bookclub/Francophile/Meryl Streep-Amy Adams-Nora Ephron-fan circles; that is, every woman we know, and many men too - is no doubt Julie and Julia, in wide release this Friday (August 7). In the juxtaposition of the tales of two women (Julie Powell [a pixieish Adams] and Julia Child [a dead-on - and tall! - Streep]), we're pretty sure Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail) has another monster hit on her hands. The story connects two intrepid heroines (one modern and one of excellent vintage) across generations through their appreciation of food, the challenge of mastering the perfect recipe, and their wanting to share the love with others through writing. Tribeca reached out to our friend and funny lady Ephron, about whom much has been written in the past month (much in the New York Times: Can You Eat in Bed?, Potlucky, Full Stomachs, »

Free Flick Fridays:[p]Prelude To a Kiss

17 July 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Prelude To a Kiss (1992) Dir. Norman Rene Rom-com sweetheart Meg Ryan (Serious Moonlight [Tff '09], You've Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally) is in her element as Rita Boyle. Quirky and free-spirited, Rita was born to a wealthy family, only to join the Socialist party (unbeknownst to her parents). Despite her beauty, youth, and health, Rita holds a very pessimistic view of the world. Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, My Sister's Keeper, The Good Shepherd, Running With Scissors) is Peter Hoskins, a slightly-timid-yet-charming man who quickly falls for Rita despite her strange ideas about the world. The couple forms an endearing pair, and it all plays out very nicely, very by-the-book romantic comedy. That is of course, until their wedding day, when an eccentric, elderly man named Julius (played by Sydney Walker) crashes the wedding and requests a kiss from the bride before he continues on his way. Seeing some kind of spark ... »

'Julie & Julia' trailer looks tasty

29 April 2009 1:57 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Nora Ephron, whose credits include "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," will soon return to the big screen with "Julie & Julia," in which Meryl Streep is Julia Child and Amy Adams is Julie Powell. The film, which will open Aug. 7, 2009, is an adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell's "Julie & Julia" and "My Life in France" by Julia Child.

Based on two true stories, "Julie & Julia" intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends... until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible. The trailer for the film popped up recently, and you can check it out after the jump. Looks kind of delicious, even though I really hate Adams' haircut. »

[DVD Review] The Other End of the Line

When you juxtapose two cultures on top of each other you have incredible potential for comedy. You can use a variety of device to mine the premise for all its comedic gold: fish out of water (Coming to America), misinterpretation (The Gods Must Be Crazy), full-out mockery (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls), and so on. These are the overarching themes that combine smaller tools of comedy to make a full movie. The Other End of the Line falls short of completing one of these themes and never rises any higher than joke after joke of colloquialisms.

Granger Woodruff (Jesse Metcalfe) runs a small marketing firm that has recently run into a few snags. Their biggest potential client, a major hotel chain, rejects their latest pitch sending them back to the drawing board. To make matters worth, Granger discovers that he's been the »
