"2012" may have destroyed the box office this weekend, but it also did plenty of damage to Nasa, who received thousands of letters and phone calls from concerned citizens that the world was going to end in just over two years -- so much so that Nasa set up a site to specifically debunk their fears. Roland Emmerich's latest disaster flick would've inevitably inspired some to panic regardless, but these calls got an assist from Sony's viral marketing campaign for the film, which included a web site devoted to The Institute for Human Continuity that, among other things, offers visitors an opportunity to register for a lottery to increase their chance of survival when the apocalypse strikes. The move inspired some, like Stuart McGurk at the Guardian to look at the ways viral marketing "can go bad." I'd like to add to the pile four more risky movie marketing maneuvers that bombed, »

In a piece examining what movie projects former News Corporation and 20th Century Fox COO Peter Chernin, Variety brings to light three new projects including one that's got Leonardo DiCaprio attached to it.
The DiCaprio thing is called The Deep Blue Goodbye and could turn out to be a new franchise for the actor. It's the first novel in John D. MacDonald's popular Travis McGee books, of which 21 have been published. Goodbye first came out in 1964.
For a series of crime books the character of McGee is unusual in that he's not a former law enforcement officer or private gumshoe. Instead, he's a self-professed "salvage consultant" who makes his money taking odd jobs for clients that need goods recovered. Every one of MacDonald's McGee books have had a color in its title. The screenplay for the Goodbye film was penned by Dana Stevens (City of Angels, For Love of the Game »

Leonardo DiCaprio’s a busy actor in some very high profile films — Scorcese’s upcoming Shutter Island, Nolan’s Inception, and Scott’s Brave New World — so you think he’d be willing to take it easy for the time being. However, how could you resist a role like Travis McGee, a “non-conformist, boat bum, knight in slightly tarnished armor — as he sets out on a wild journey through the wreckage of a woman’s soul?”
McGee is the main character in Leonardo’s upcoming vehicle The Deep Blue Goodbye, based on a pulpy 1964 detective novel by John D. MacDonald. The book began a series that lasted for 21 entries. While no director has been chosen for the project, the novel has been adapted for screen by Dana Stevens (City of Angels, For Love of the Game).
This sounds like a cool throwback film that DiCaprio would be well-suited for. Hopefully »

Peter Chernin joins Appian Way's DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran as producers on the project written by Dana Stevens ( For Love of the Game ). Amy Robinson also is involved in a producing capacity. DiCaprio is in line to play Travis McGee, a self-described beach bum who lives aboard 52-foot houseboat the Busted Flush and alleviates his cash-flow problems by hiring on as a "salvage consultant." He recovers property for clients, taking a hefty percentage and getting into a lot of danger and romance in sun-drenched Florida. »
