TRAVESTY! SELLOUT!, 1 July 1999

Sam and Max is one of the funniest, most rereadable comics I've ever read, but this series had nothing in common with it except the names and the likenesses. Since when do Sam and Max need fancy gadgets? Since when do they need a plucky girl sidekick? In the comic they would have thrown mustard packets at her, or anything except have her build inventions for them in their underground lair. The freakin DeSoto was awesome because it was a POS, why does it need turbo engines or whatever were put on it? One episode was more than I could take. To make a Saturday morning cartoon out of this great comedy is an utter sellout by Steve Purcell, so I hope he got a lot of money for dragging the name of his creation through the mud. A TV show of Sam and Max belongs on cable, preferably HBO. It's no surprise that the series failed, in trying to appeal to more people, Steve Purcell appealed to no one.
