Near the beginning of Adaptation, Charlie Kaufman, while advising his fictional brother Donald in the fine art of screenwriting, he suggests sarcastically that he “explore the notion that cop and criminal are really two aspects of the same person. See every cop movie ever made for other examples of this.” Really, he could save the time and just watch Heat. Of all the police/cop/heist crime movies of the 80s and 90s, probably none quite so completely embodies that “we’re not so different, you and I” dynamic that has been the last resort of screenwriters since the dawn of Hollywood. Nearly fifteen years on, this is both Heat’s greatest success and its greatest liability, because while nothing following in its footsteps has equaled it in scope or clarity, some of its drama has been rendered inert by the sheer number of well-funded directors who have tried, as »

Spoiler Alert: This Review Reveals A Key Event In The Film's Plot Anti-Christ Dir. Lars Von Trier Denmark, B&W, 109 minutes IFC Films Analyze This: Anti-Christ, Beyond Good & Evil Cinema Human beings have always given form to their fears by creating a Demon-God -- usually called Satan -- that reflects their own insecurities -- and it's the same with maverick filmmakers, who are revered or reviled in accordance with the viewers' self-projection, as they discern between good cinema or evil cinema. In using the term "maverick", I'm emphasizing the mid 19th-century origin of the term as told to me by this computer's dictionary, "from the name of Samuel A. Maverick (1803-70), a Texas engineer and rancher who did not brand his cattle" [emphasis added], just as Lars Von Trier is reluctant to explain his motives or intent beyond what he's put up on screen. Since Lars... »

One of the worst reviewed films of the year comes to DVD tomorrow, October 6th, with theatrical and unrated releases, and despite a 16% freshness rating, there are moments of fun in the Harold Ramis effort. Many were quick to slam Year One, and wonder in shock at the downfall of Ramis, the man behind Caddyshack, Animal House, Stripes, and Groundhog Day, but I think they may have been a bit too quick in more than one direction. First, the film isn't that bad. Second, Ramis really creates potential to a far greater degree than he solidifies actuality, and then he puts Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and other comedic talents into his films, and sometimes they work out. Where his films are genius, it is more a result of the stars ability to make it play well than anything else. Let's not pretend Club Paradise, Analyze This (and That), and Bedazzled don't exist. »

From Sony comes word that Year One will be on DVD October 6th. They have alos sent over complete dvd and bluray specs. History was made...by these guys? Zed (Jack Black) and Oh (Michael Cera) are cavemen who stumble out of the mountains into an epic journey of biblical proportions. One’s a bumbling hunter, the other’s a gentle gatherer; together, they become unlikely participants in history’s most pivotal moments. Directed and co-written by comedy legend Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, Analyze This), Year One is rude, crude, wildly absurd, deliciously tasteless and l... »

You already know Borat. You’re about to know Brüno. Some of us already know Brüno, perhaps a little too well in Eminem’s case. Did you know that there’s another famous Sacha Baron Cohen character lurking in the depths of pop culture’s murky waters? In his own words, I be talkin’ ’bout me main man, Ali G.
As portrayed by Cohen, the British “journalist” called Ali G is a lewd, disrespectful and typically unintelligent personality, showing up for interviews in his trademark attire: baggy clothes, skull cap, yellow sunglasses and various rings and chains. Still, the Cohen character managed to land one-on-ones with several high profile personalities in the entertainment industry, politics and other areas of life.
After some of those tense encounters, it’s truly no surprise that Cohen has had to retire the Ali G persona for good. Luckily, these moments live eternally in our »

Chicago – Kicking off the Chicago-based “TBS Presents A ‘Very Funny’ Festival: Just for Laughs” on June 17, 2009, Harold Ramis presented his film “Year One” at the Music Box Theatre. Starring Jack Black (“High Fidelity”) and Michael Cera (“Juno”), “Year One” touts itself as a comedy of the ages – the dark ages – as it follows Zed (Black) and Oh (Cera) on their accidentally religious quest.
At the opening, “Just for Laughs” presented its first-ever lifetime achievement award to the humble and well-deserving Ramis in honor of the awe-inspiring career of this actor, writer, director and producer. A Chicago-native Ramis said: “It’s so nice that this is happening at home.”

Harold Ramis has worked in comedy a long time, and his career has taken many directions. With his work on the Ghostbusters (1984) script and his straight-man performance in the film, he managed to allow Bill Murray room to move and riff within the confines of a visual effects-heavy summer blockbuster. As for the meticulously crafted classic Groundhog Day (1993), I hesitate to call any movie "perfect," but it comes close. But then there were phoned-in hits like Analyze This (1999) and Analyze That (2002) that seemed too tightly wound and too slavishly dependent on plot to be very funny.
Ramis' new film Year One, on the other hand, comes closer to the spirit of his directorial debut Caddyshack (1980). I'm not saying it's quite as funny or as brilliant, but it's in the same spirit. It cares thankfully little about its plot or its character arcs, or historical accuracy; it's a bit flabby and careless, »

The players: Director: Harold Ramis, Writers: Gene Stupnitsky, Lee Eisenberg, Harold Ramis, Cast: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, David Cross, Hank Azaria
Facts of interest: Ramis also directed "The Ice Harvest," "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This."
The plot: Jack Black and Michael Cera play two idiotic cavemen who are banished from their village and embark on a long voyage to dangerous places.
Our thoughts: Jack Black and Michael Cera travel back in time in Harold Ramis’ latest comedy “Year One,” but sadly enough, their big-screen journey across ancient times isn’t exactly as hilarious as it sounds. The recurrence of cheap, brainless humor and the lack of a proper story line cause plenty of damage to the plot, putting the film’s chances to score with large audiences in serious jeopardy. »

Harold Ramis, as Adam, and Jack Black in The Year One, which Ramis directed.Would it be presumptuous to call Harold Ramis' new comedy, Year One, a "classic" before most people (including this writer) have seen it? No, actually, it wouldn't. In case you've forgotten, Harold Ramis is responsible for everything cool in the universe. He co-wrote and/or directed movies like Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Animal House, Groundhog Day, Stripes, Vacation, Analyze This and The Ice Harvest, among many others. He was a head writer for the cult 70s sketch show Sctv, a frequent director for NBC's The Office, and a writer/actor for the National Lampoon back when the National Lampoon wasn't an assembly line for all things crappy. If it made you laugh and was created in the last four decades, odds are that Ramis had a hand in it or at least inspired it. (Admittedly, Ramis has also given us some stinkers. »

Robert De Niro has dismissed rumours he arranged meetings with a mob boss to research his role in crime comedy Analyze This - insisting he doesn't recall taking a never-before-seen photo with a gangster on set.
The Oscar-winning actor, who is famous for meticulously researching his roles, played a neurotic mafioso in the 1999 movie.
A source tells the New York Daily News Anthony Corozzo - an associate of the infamous Gambino crime family, who played an extra in Analyze This - introduced De Niro to mobster Anthony 'Fat Andy' Ruggiano. Ruggiano died in March 1999 and was involved in at least seven murders.
A photograph of the pair taken in De Niro's trailer has sparked rumours the actor set up meetings with members of the ruthless crime family to prepare for his role.
But De Niro's spokesperson Stan Rosenfeld insists the movie was made far too long ago for the actor to remember Ruggiano.
Rosenfeld adds: "Bob (De Niro) seldom, if ever, discusses his research techniques." »

For nearly thirty years, filmmaker Harold Ramis has had America laughing with his writing, whether it was with National Lampoon's Animal House , Caddyshack , the two "Ghostbusters" movies, Groundhog Day or Analyze This . After taking a few years off from directing, he's been brought back into the spotlight thanks to the adoration of his seemingly #1 fan, Judd Apatow, who also came forward to produce Ramis' first comedy in four years, Year One . The biblical road comedy has Ramis working with Hollywood's new breed of comic actors, as Jack Black and Michael Cera play a pair of hunter-gatherers at the beginning of time who leave their primitive village for an epic road trip where they meet many famous characters from the Old Testament. This should be a fairly... »

It's been 25 years since the birth of the Ghostbusters franchise and the original creative team is working on a new flick. In a telephone interview yesterday, Comingsoon.net talked to writer/director Harold Ramis (Year One, Analyze This, Groundhog Day) and received some info on the upcoming Ghostbusters III.
Ramis and Dan Aykroyd wrote the scripts for the first two movies and both starred with Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver. Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who are regular writers for The Office, are developing a first draft of the script and Ramis says he's optimistic that the new movie will feature most of the original cast:
I wrote the story for the new movie with [Eisenberg and Stupnitsky], and Dan [Aykroyd] and I've been consulting. We're just waiting to see a first draft and where we are ... Everyone says they'll do it; they've all said they'll do it. No one has signed »

The Hangover Impresses Audiences: On Opening Day, Todd Phillips very funny "The Hangover" (I saw it yesterday, and I highly recommend it for good slapstick laughs) made 16.5 million dollars in one day alone. "...The production budget was rumored to have hovered around only $30 million..." which makes this a very impressive first day and bodes well for the upcoming weekend. "Up" floated to a very impressive Friday total of "$13.5 million for an impressive $106.5 million (total)... in just 10 days." Number three on the Friday film grosses was an underwhelming performance by the Will Ferrell vehicle "Land of the Lost" made only "...7.2 million..." http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2009-6-6-the-hangover-lives-up-to-the-hype-with-an-impressive-16-5-million-friday/ [1] Personally, I find it shocking that the opening night of "Land of the Lost" was so low, especially considering you couldn't go five minutes without seeing a TV spot for it last week. As well, Ferrell was the first guest »
