What We're Reading: The Art of the Title Sequence

FirstShowing.net has pointed us towards a very, very cool film blog: The Art of the Title Sequence. Title sequences, can indeed be works of art. Look at the Hitchcockian-inspired "Catch Me If You Can," the 13-minute continuous shot from "Snake Eyes" (with only 8 well hidden cuts in the entire sequence) and the stylized 2D animation in Pixar's "The Incredibles" for just a few examples of excellent work in title sequences and opening credits.
FirstShowing highlights Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" for special attention -- and while that sequence (and its accompanied John Williams score) is indeed brilliant, I think my favorite title sequence of the last ten years or so belongs to David Fincher's "Fight Club."

Remember Nicolas Cage? He doesn't work very often so the name may not immediately ring a bell, but maybe some of his films might jar your memory... Birdy, Raising Arizona, Wild At Heart, Adaptation? (Not to be confused with Nicholas Z. Kage, an "actor" who sleepwalks through roles and films like Fire Birds, Trapped In Paradise, Snake Eyes, Gone In Sixty Seconds, National Treasure, Ghost Rider, Next, Bangkok Dangerous, and many, many more.) He's an actor who craves odd and interesting characters but manages to shape them into real, fully developed people that sometimes outshine the films they inhabit. Where other actors just present an idiosyncratic caricature he crafts people who are more than simply the sum of their quirks. So as I said earlier, Cage doesn't make a lot of movies. The good news though is that after a multi-year absence from movie screens he's finally returned in Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

In case you missed it when it was being aired on the internet, and again when Cartoon Network aired it at a midnight showing, “G.I. Joe: Resolute” was an 11 episode animated series based on the cartoons and comics of the 1980’s. It was written by Warren Ellis, directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, and produced by Sam Register. And it was absolutely amazing and it’s the superior of the G.I.Joe releases that hit DVD on November 3. I’ve seen them both and well you’ll just have to keep reading to find out more.
Well I’ll start off saying I enjoyed Stephen Sommers’ “G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra.” I also enjoyed Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.” Both could’ve have been much better, and “G.I.Joe” definitely had more potential and more done right than “Transformers 2,

The biggest disappointment about G.I. Joe: Resolute is the fact that it is only 58 minutes long. If you are already a fan of the classic G.I. Joe cartoons or the franchise, this is a film you simply don.t want to end. Written by Warren Ellis and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Resolute grounds the Joes/Cobra story in reality (or as close to it as the franchise has ever come), and delivers a story that is aimed at the adult fan (there is quite a bit of blood spilling and killing for this to be considered a kids. film). Nasa's controlled "bombing" of the moon had comics creators talking on Twitter today. It turns out a lot of them are interested in that kind of stuff, with Paul Pope, Matt Fraction and many others weighing in on the planned moon crash earlier today.
And while we're on the subject of projects that took a great deal of planning, check out the TwitPic Jim Lee posted of artwork he and the WildStorm team put together for departing DC Comics head Paul Levitz. There's a lot of love in that picture. Streeting November 3, 2009 will be the DVD and Blu-ray home versions of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Paramount Home Video is releasing one-disc ($19.99), two-disc $24.99) and two-disc Blu-ray ($29.99) versions of the hit action film.
Directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) and starring Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, Ray Park, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Eccleston and Sienna Miller, this live-action $170 million dollar adaptation of Hasbro's action figure line serves as an introduction to the adrenaline-charged Joe's world and shows us the formation of their deadly adversaries, the terrorist group that will be called Cobra.

After earning nearly $300 million in worldwide box office grosses during its theatrical run, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is set to make another boatload of money this November 3rd, when the film comes out on DVD and Blu-ray. Available in multiple formats, G.I. Joe fans can take the film home for $19.99 as a one-disc DVD, for $24.99 as a two-disc DVD, or for $29.99 as a two-disc Blu-ray.
If you opt for the two-disc DVD or Blu-ray, you’ll get access to a digital copy of the film, as well as two featurettes, “The Big Bang Theory: The Making of G.I.
