Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in It's Complicated
Photo: Universal Pictures
In my book Nancy Meyers is more hit than miss. Of her five directorial outings I have only missed The Parent Trap and would say Something's Gotta Give is the one I liked the least out of the bunch and I still liked that one. I particularly enjoyed The Holiday and What Women Want is a satisfying diversion. That said, I enjoyed It's Complicated more than all of them. Meryl Streep continually proves she is to never be doubted and Alec Baldwin carries over his award-winning "30 Rock" persona to feature film with absolute ease. Baldwin and Streep play off each other as if they had been doing it for years.
At the center of the story is Jane (Streep) a divorced mother of three with a highly successful Santa Barbara bakery. Jake (Baldwin) is her lawyer ex-husband who is

The MPAA Gets an X-Rating

With a long history of inexplicable, often mind-numbing decisions rating movies, the MPAA has remarkably outdone themselves. They've just reached a new low that gives them a tough standard to match in the future.
The movie in question is It's Complicated. A perfectly normal romantic comedy from writer-director Nancy Meyers, the filmmaker of such genial fare as The Holiday, Something's Gotta Give, and The Parent Trap remake. But in their unique sense of wisdom, It's Complicated got...an R-rating.
And in their reason is the tale.
Before I explain their reason, though, make your own guess. Why do you think the MPAA gave the good-hearted romantic comedy, It's Complicated, an R-rating? Got an answer? Good.
You're wrong.
The reason It's Complicated got an R-rating is because - I can't believe I'm typing this - there is a scene when characters smoke

Private Practice Round Table: "The Parent Trap," "Blowups"

Last night's two-hour Private Practice event featured a number of dramatic developments involving the characters we love, as we described in our lengthy review earlier.
Now it's time to explore "The Parent Trap" and "Blowups" even further.
Below, our staff breaks down some of the burning questions from last night's episode our Private Practice Round Table discussion. Here's how our panel saw it ...
1. Wow, two hours! What was your favorite scene from last night?
The Barnacle: It's hard to call it a "favorite," since it was painful to watch, but if we're going with the most powerful, Dell telling Heather how he really felt when he learned how the house blew up. You could see his anger and guilt building up as he just exploded.
Dr. Shepherd: Definitely Pete telling Heather "I forgive you" and "our baby will be fine," when she thought he was Dell. So compassionate, plus the

Private Practice aired back-to-back episodes last night, and while one primary story arc - involving Addison's parents - continued throughout, they were very different.
In the first hour, Sam and Naomi's parenting struggles actually brought them closer together, while in the second, Dell's world was turned upside down by Heather.
If you missed "The Parent Trap" and "Blowups," follow the link for our full recaps. Now, a look at the developments of each, and why they worked for us (or didn't):
Part I: Addison and Pete treat a 60-year-old pregnant woman with a 30-year-old husband and work hard to save their at-risk baby, which they do ... at least for now.
This case was a plot device to keep Addison and Pete close after Violet stunned them both by jumping into the sack with The Captain after meeting him for 12 seconds.
Rather than worrying about Pete's feelings, or Addison's (her

Get ready for a double shot of Private Practice!
Two episodes, "The Parent Trap" and "Blowups," will air back-to-back tomorrow evening on ABC. The titles are telling. In the former, Sam and Naomi must cope with their teenage daughter growing up too fast, while Addison has to contend with the Captain.
The latter? Well, you can take it literally.
"We all knew some sh!t was going down," Chris Lowell told E!, and he wasn't kidding. Dell’s home explodes, landing both his wife Heather and their daughter in the hospital.
“When it first happens, there’s total panic and hysteria,” Lowell teased.
That's nothing compared to when the cause of the blast is revealed, he says: “It rocks Dell’s world in a bad way. After this episode, he completely loses faith in a lot of things.”
Our guess? Heather's a meth dealer.

You can tell it was a good episode of Gossip Girl because the much-hyped threesome wasn’t even the best part. In fact, it kinda yielded mixed emotions…at least from me. Hilary Duff attempting to be sexy just felt, uh, weird. I had a similar reaction to seeing Julie Andrews naked in the movie S.O.B. It’s just not something you want to see, kinda like grown women wearing Loony Tunes paraphernalia. But, honestly, the whole thing was pretty chaste. Aside from a shot of them all in bed together in the end, it was basically no more risqué

It's Freaky Monday At CBS Films

When it comes to the Lindsay Lohan remakes of 70s-era Disney movies, I am firmly in favor of the best two, The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday. But honestly, being able to make decent remakes of either of those movies was a complete fluke, and trying it again would be completely foolish.
Well, Disney is at least smart enough not to try it, and CBS Films isn't doing it... not exactly. Instead they're adapting Freaky Monday, the follow-up book written by original Freaky Friday author Mary Rodgers and Heath Hach, who sold CBS Films the rights. According to Variety the book finds an insecure girl (apparently not the original Jodie Foster character) switching places with her sympathetic English teacher, which sounds like a much less interesting switch than the mother-daughter combo.
Still, body-switching comedies are always in vogue, and I'll admit I've got a weakness for them myself. They've got

Lohan Based Fame On Spears

Lindsay Lohan always wanted to live her life in the spotlight - after envying her idol Britney Spears' rise to fame.
The actress first dabbled with stardom as a 12 year old, appearing in Disney movie The Parent Trap before her turn in 2004 film Mean Girls made her a media favourite.
Lohan became a regular on the party circuit in Los Angeles, but spiralled out of control just a few years later. She was arrested twice in 2007 on drink driving charges and has spent time in rehab in a bid to combat her troubles.
But the star admits she always knew the pitfalls of fame - because she watched the Toxic hitmaker's meteoric rise as a youngster.
She tells Access Hollywood, “Everyone goes through tough times. I think I’ve always kind of aspired to be like Britney Spears in the tabloids when I was in middle school. It’s kind of something you sign up for in the beginning and if you really want it, you know that comes with it."
Lohan admits the scrutiny she has faced during her decade in the limelight has had its problems - but she is determined not to give the press a chance to criticise her in the future.
She adds, “There are times when it does affect me. When I’m having a bad day or dealing with something personal that is no one else’s business they’re going to spin it anyway. If I make the wrong face and I’m having a really great day, they’re going to say something negative anyway.
"I know that I’m a target and I know that I’ve given people a lot of reason to kind of run with things that have been said. I no longer intend on doing that, but I’m not perfect.”
But despite her troubles, the 23 year old is adamant she wouldn't change her past - because it has shaped the person she has become.
Lohan says, “There are things I would like to take back and I always say that, but there aren’t many things that I regret doing, because I wouldn’t have learned from them, and I wouldn’t be where I am today. I think it’s taken me a long time to learn how to love myself before I could love someone else too. Whether it be a best friend or family or someone that I’m in a relationship with.”

Appearing sans clothing in the pages of Playboy has given a much-needed jumpstart to many actresses throughout the decades. Sometimes the celeb finds herself appearing wearing nothing but her birthday suit -- well, and maybe a couple of lacy undergarments usually half off their body -- against her wishes because the photos come from a time when she wasn't as well known as she is now and needed the fash cash. Marylyn Monroe, Joan Collins, Madonna are some of the women that come immediately to mind. On other occasions the actress is a willing participant who cashes in on a nice payday as well as takes a gamble that a racier photospread will bring her to the attention of filmmakers looking to cast their new movie. And it may be Lindsay Lohan who becomes this next breed of celeb Playboy pictoral.

In honor of Quentin Tarantino week here at Wamg, this column will tackle the 1968 British psycho-thriller Twisted Nerve. A music highlight of Tarantino’s first Kill Bill film in 2003 occurs during the scene when Darryl Hannah’s eye-patched Elle Driver is walking down the hospital corridors intending to dispatch Uma Thurman and she’s whistling this haunting tune that is at the same time both childlike and threatening. Curious, I read the closing credits and the strange song was identified as the theme from the movie Twisted Nerve composed by Bernard Herrmann. That title was familiar as I had its cool psychedelic U.S. one-sheet in my collection but I’d never seen the film and immediately became determined to track it down. I was able to secure a British Pal import of the film and was pleased to find Twisted Nerve an excellent, nasty little forgotten thriller about a warped young psychopath.

Universal Pictures has released the movie trailer for It's Complicated, the new movie from Nancy Meyers writer/producer of The Father of the Bride, director of the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, and The Holiday. Yes, it's essentially an "old person's romantic comedy." If you like Meyer's other films, this might be of interest. Otherwise, you might want to forward the link to your mom or dad. Even talented funny-men like Steve Martin, John Krasinski and Alec Baldwin couldn't drag me into a theater for this film. I guess I'm probably not the target audience. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Actress Hendrix Knew Lohan Would Be Trouble

Lindsay Lohan's The Parent Trap co-star Elaine Hendrix has blamed the actress' "tumultuous family dynamic" for her rocky personal life - insisting she always knew troubles would follow the star.
Hendrix worked with the then-budding young star on the hit 1998 Disney film - when Lohan was just 12 years old - and even then she knew the pre-teen was set for tough times.
Lohan went on to star in a string of successful films, including 2004's Mean Girls, but her promising career has been marred by a string of drink driving charges and allegations of excess boozing and partying.
Hendrix reveals that from what she saw of Lohan's family, she was convinced the talented young actress would have difficulty adapting to life in Hollywood.
She tells Fox News, "I didn’t know she was going to be the next big thing, but it’s not really a surprise that she is where she is. She’s extremely talented, but she has a tumultuous family dynamic happening, so it’s not really a surprise she is where she is.
"Growing up having the experiences she’s had, those things affect her behaviour and her decisions.”
