The revival of a Sondheim musical with a very British flavour lures recession-hit New York audiences back to the theatre
She made her stage debut as the lead in Annie at the Swansea Grand Theatre at 12. Now, 28 years later, the Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones is again treading the boards, although in slightly more grandiose surroundings.
Zeta-Jones, 40, will make her first appearance on Broadway next month when the curtain goes up on Sir Trevor Nunn's eagerly awaited revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical A Little Night Music. Preview performances at the Walter Kerr theatre began last week in advance of the opening night on 13 December and tickets, which are being sold on eBay for as much as $300, are like gold dust.
In the production Zeta-Jones, who plays the part of a flamboyant actress called Desiree Armfeldt, sings one of Sondheim's most famous songs, "Send in the Clowns". Although there have »

Catherine Zeta-Jones has hinted she wants to give up her Hollywood career - because she's sick of the glaring spotlight cast on celebrities.
The Mask Of Zorro star, who reaches the landmark age of 40 on Friday, has no desire to move to Los Angeles or take roles in big-budget blockbuster hits, insisting she's much happier splitting time between properties in New York and Bermuda with her actor husband Michael Douglas and their children.
She explains, "When you live in L.A., you can't go anywhere without being critiqued - on your purse or the fact that you have gained weight or that you have got spots on your face.
"That's not the life I want. Deciding to live in beautiful Bermuda was the healthiest thing Michael and I ever did. Now that I have kids that's what my life is about."
And Zeta-Jones, who is preparing to star in the Broadway musical A Little Night, is delighted about hitting 40 and starring in different projects outside of Tinseltown.
She adds, "I think it will be a huge change career-wise. I'm going into a different chapter as an actor. I'm not going to play the ingenues but I'm not going to play the mother of teenagers either." »

It looks like Warner Bros. is finally getting serious about Green Lantern. Or at least as serious as Casino Royale. The studio has brought in two-time Bond relauncher Martin Campbell to direct their big-budget flick about the DC Comics hero who really hates yellow. Campbell has demonstrated aptitude with both character and action (Goldeneye, The Mask Of Zorro), which would seem to make him a sensible selection. Screenwriters Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green have all been... »
