Butler was destined to play king in 300

26 December 2009 4:43 AM, PST | Hindustan Times - Cinema | See recent Hindustan Times - Cinema news »

He made a major breakthrough in Hollywood with his portrayal of King Leonidas in 300, a role actor Gerard Butler feels was destined to be his. The Scottish actor had played a king in an early Christmas pageant in school, which he thinks, prepared him for his role in the epic movie, reported Empire magazine. "I was one of the Three Kings in the Nativity, the one that brought the myrrh. I kept thinking, 'Why am I not bringing a gift that's worth something? What's my motivation?' "Even then, I knew I was destined to play another king. 'He »

Butler's Nativity Role Set Up Future Career

24 December 2009 4:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gerard Butler is convinced an early role in a school nativity play set him on course for his breakthrough as King Leonidas in 300.

The Scottish actor shot to international stardom with his portrayal of the legendary Spartan monarch in the 2007 blockbuster.

And Butler admits he was ready for the role, having already played a King in an early Christmas pageant.

He tells Empire magazine, "I was one of the Three Kings in the Nativity, the one that brought the myrrh. I kept thinking, 'Why am I not bringing a gift that's worth something? What's my motivation?' Even then, I knew I was destined to play another king. 'He should be bringing an army of 300 guys and kicking some a**! This is boring!'" »

Gilles Marini Imports French Tradition to Hollywood

23 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

Make no mistake: Gilles Marini takes Christmas very seriously. He buys a tree right after Thanksgiving and keeps it up well into January. And the French actor says he always makes sure “there are a lot of gifts under that tree” on Christmas morning for his children Georges, 10, and Juliana, 3, with his wife Carole, 32.

Even though he’s lived in Los Angeles for a decade, Gilles — who waltzed his way to second place on Dancing With the Stars and currently stars on Brothers & Sisters — makes it a point to inject a taste of France into his family’s holidays by »

Mackenzie Crook, Peter Capaldi and Richard Eyre inject credibility into Sky's season of dialogue-free short films

'Tis the season to be merry; it's also clearly the season for celebrity-studded short-film portmanteau seasons. Sky1 has come up with a Christmas-themed collection of 11 films lasting 10 minutes, all dialogue-free, that is unabashedly heartwarming, but also manages to inject a surprising amount of cinematic credibility into proceedings.

This sort of thing is normally a refuge for TV names taking a moment off from the day job and attempting to "stretch", or giving a shot in the director's chair for some actor or other – and the likes of Ross Kemp, Liza Tarbuck, Paterson Joseph and Peter Capaldi are all present and correct.

But there are some very odd participants floating about in Ten Minute Tales, people who I'd have thought would never have gone near a seasonal schmaltz-fest. For one, graphic novel maestro Neil Gaiman, »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

David O. Russell Helming "Zombies"?

15 December 2009 5:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Famously temperamental director David O. Russell ("Three Kings," "I Heart Huckabees") is tipped to be both adapting the script and directing the film version of Seth Grahame-Smith’s "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" reports Pajiba.

Reports last week indicated Natalie Portman is up for the female lead in the comedic undead take on the Jane Austen classic.

The choice of Russell however seems odd as the director has scored a rather infamous reputation for being difficult to work with. He also still has two projects currently in post ("Nailed," "The Fighter") that haven't settled on any release plans as yet. »

David O. Russell To Battle Jane Austen And Zombies?

15 December 2009 3:14 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Last week we ran a news story that Natalie Portman was circling “literary mash up” Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Seth Graham-Smith takes Jane Austen’s much-obsessed over 19th century novel and adds zombie scenes. Simple. Whilst it might be as empty-headed as a freshly devoured corpse, it is at least tongue-in-cheek and meant to be fun (and funny).

Now, in an extra twist (that nobody saw coming!), Pajiba have it that none other than ‘Three Kings’ and ‘I Heart Huckabees’ maestro David O. Russell wants to direct it. An interesting project just got, er, more interesting!

Russell has finished his stress-free shoot on The Fighter with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, so he obviously wants to have some fun! Russell is prone to fits of rage and arguing with his cast. Rumour still abounds to this day that George Clooney punched him (allegedly) after he went into a screaming »

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies Gets A Director...

15 December 2009 3:09 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

This story's so bizarre, we just pray that it's true. Various interweb sources are reporting that Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees director David O. Russell is in line to helm Pride And Prejudice And Zombies.

Following hot on the heels of Natalie Portman's appointment as the heroine of the piece (which finds hoardes of the undead invading the world of Jane Austen), the news that the notoriously fickle director may be signing up to slay zombies in olden times has us scratching our heads in disbelief.

Although it's technically a rumour at this point, we love the leftfield direction this movie is going in. Russell has neither worked on a period drama or a horror, so we have to hope that he's attempting to stretch out of his comfort zone.

We'll let you know what's happening just as soon as the whispers are confirmed, until then what do you think of the rumour? »

Russell Directing 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'?

15 December 2009 1:54 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Last week, Natalie Portman was linked to the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which, like the companion piece, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, is exactly what it sounds like. And Portman will co-produce, an indication that she's starting to expand her horizons a bit. This could be a project to keep your eye on.

And now the film may have just added a perfect piece of volaility. Pajiba reports that David O. Russell, a director actors either love or want to strangle, has been mentioned as the leading candidate to helm Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Russell is probably best known for his tantrums, unfortunately, because Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees - though they reportedly did have their share of tantrums - are awfully good movies. The guy knows what he's doing. »

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

15 December 2009 12:02 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

David O. Russell has directed only one movie that I’ve seen, the George Clooney Gulf War flick “Three Kings”. It was pretty good, but it wasn’t great. I hear tell his 1996 “Flirting with Disaster” was pretty good, too, but I’ve never seen that, so I can’t say. Now there are rumors that Russell, who has just come off “The Fighter” with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, is in line to adapt and direct “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”, Seth Grahame-Smith’s flesh-eating take on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” novel. The project has already nabbed Natalie Portman as its producer and star, and the signing of Russell could mean the studio is anxious to fast-track the picture. Is it a zombie movie with flesh-eating undead English folk? A period drama and love story with corsets and crumpets and all that other stuff British people eat? »

Russell to Direct Pride, Prejudice, Zombies?

14 December 2009 7:38 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

David O. Russell may be stepping behind the camera for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies starring Natalie Portman.

According to Pajiba, Russell is finishing a deal to adapt the Seth Grahame-Smith novel and direct the movie.  The period piece is based on the Jane Austen novel with a little added undead to make it new again.  Portman was set for the lead, Elizabeth Bennett, late last week.

Russell is a weird choice considering his notorious history.  He had a now famous argument on the set of I Heart Huckabees with Lily Tomlin, reportedly came to blows with George Clooney during Three Kings, and a recently Nailed fell apart in a financing meltdown and James Caan walked out.  At least he managed to get through photography on The Fighter with Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg without a hitch (that we know of).  How he managed that might be the greatest achievement of his career. »

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies… the movie

14 December 2009 4:22 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

You knew it was only a matter of time. When the book Pride And Prejudice And Zombies came out earlier this year, it was mentioned on almost every corner of the internet, it being the awesome idea that it is. The books is a retelling of the famous Jane Austen novel. With added zombies. And now we've not only got confirmation that a movie is, in fact, in the works, but we've got some news on who is going to be a part of it. According to Variety, the film will star and be co-produced by Natalie Portman, with Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly also producing. It's also being reported that David O. Russell (I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings) is in talks to direct. »

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

14 December 2009 3:42 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Just last week we found out that Natalie Portman was going to be joining the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in addition to producing the undead period piece with Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly. However, there was still no word on who would be directing, let alone writing the script. But with the film moving so quickly, it sounds like a director might already be in place as Pajiba claims that David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) might be writing and directing. So while the risk of a fight breaking out on set has increased exponentially, this project would certainly be in good hands. While David O. Russell is temperamental, he's one of the more original and unique filmmakers out there. You have to respect a guy who jumps from a relatively grounded film set during the Gulf War (Three Kings) to a crazy, not-easily-accessible existential »

I Heart Huckabees director joins Natalie Portman for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

14 December 2009 2:46 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at first appeared to be a one note literary effort. The title was kind of amusing, to a degree, but surely there was not much more that could be done with this idea? Well apparently a slew of film companies thought otherwise at Seth Graham-Smith’s book, Jane Austen’s original tome with inserted undead characters, was announced as a go project by Richard Kelly’s Darko Films. Then, to add the project some credence, it was surprisingly declared that Natalie Portman, demure enough to play period and kooky enough to be hip, had signed on for the project.

Today, according to Pajiba, the film has taken an even more interesting turn. David O Russell, the hot tempered director of Three Kings, Flirting With Disaster and I Heart Huckabees, is apparently finalizing a deal to direct and adapt the project from page to screen. Although »

David O. Russell to Write and Direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

14 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

So, about this Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie... it just got a lot more interesting. When I first heard about Seth Grahame-Smith's mash-up of the 1813 Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, it sounded to me like just another ironic fanboy creation. Kind of amusing, sure, but mostly appealing because of the ridiculous title rather than the actual content itself. I mean, could it be any more obvious that all you need to do is slap the word "zombie" on something to sell it? On top of that, moving forward with a film adaptation at this point in time kinda screams out Zombieland wanna-be. But then last week it was announced that Natalie Portman had signed on to star [1] in the movie, which instantly gave the project a little bit more credibility. This has been followed up by Pajiba [2], who claim to have the inside scoop that David O. Russell (Three Kings, »

A mash-up of a Jane Austen literary classic and the munching undead is odd enough... so why not add an unorthodox auteur? According to Pajiba, purportedly impulsive director David O. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies and David O. Russell Coming on Board to Write and Direct

14 December 2009 1:05 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Following last week’s news that Natalie Portman would star in and produce the adaptation of the horror-comedy novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is Seth Grahame-Smith’s twist on Jane Austen’s classic period romance story, Pajiba reports that David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) will direct and and pen the adaptation.  O. Russell wrapped production on The Fighter (starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams) last August, so presumably this would be his next film, while his health-care comedy Nailed will apparently continue to languish in post-production limbo due to its financial problems and James Caan quitting the project in the middle of filming.

Russell has a bit of a rep for being a hothead ever since the video of his fight with Lily Tomlin on the set of Huckabees landed on YouTube.  However, he’s an auteur who will bring a unique vision »
