About 25 years ago, when there was a whole sub-genre of "redneck" movies, "The Hunter's Moon" would have felt right at home playing at most American drive-ins. But those types of films seem like relics of the past, and even decent ones like "The Hunter's Moon" now get sent straight to video. In one of his best recent performances, Burt Reynolds switches to the other side of "Deliverance" as a feared Depression-era mountain man, who goes over the edge when his beloved daughter starts cavorting with a drifter (Keith Carradine). With a long gray ponytail and rotting yellow teeth, Reynolds single-handedly saves this movie by delivering a performance of smoldering intensity. Unfortunately, the film drags when Reynolds isn't center stage. Even so, "The Hunter's Moon" remains more watchable than most theatrical releases of the late 1990s.
