Williams Was Never Told About Mork & Mindy Cancellation

26 November 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Comedian Robin Williams refuses to get complacent about his Hollywood success - because he will never forget the moment he found out his TV show Mork & Mindy had been scrapped.

The funnyman landed his big break in the late 1970s playing the alien Mork in the sitcom opposite actress Pam Dawber.

Bosses at U.S. TV network ABC, which aired the series, cancelled the programme in 1982 - but no one told Williams, and he was devastated when he read about his show's demise in trade paper Daily Variety.

He tells People magazine, "I found out the show was cancelled by reading it in Variety. In Hollywood that's like reading your own obituary: 'You're dead, good luck!'"

Williams has since earned his superstar status with roles in films like the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting, Patch Adams and Mrs. Doubtfire. »

Brain food: philosophy hits the big screen

24 November 2009 12:34 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Can Examined Life, a movie featuring nothing but philosophers talking, really be an enjoyable cinematic experience. Surprisingly, yes

Early in the film Examined Life, literary theorist Avital Ronell asks the director Astra Taylor, "What are you getting me into here?" A pertinent question, because Taylor's new documentary makes for a grim outline: eight philosophers talking for 10 minutes each on anything from theories of justice to cosmopolitanism. The nearest we get to a car chase is a long, sweaty drive in an old Volvo to a lecture hall.

What it is, however, is an enjoyable experiment: moral philosophy – the motion picture. After all, your multiplex is more likely to show scenes of teenage devil worship than someone thinking. Film-makers have good reasons to avoid contemplation. For one thing, it is not a pretty business. As Oscar Wilde observed: "The moment one sits down to think, one becomes all nose, or all forehead, »

Alexander Skarsgard: I'm Gonna Have a Lot of Sex This Year

Alexander Skarsgard's mom would be proud that he was recently named the Sexiest Bad Boy and Vampire Hottie by People magazine. Ironically, Skarsgård, who plays bad-boy vampire Eric Northman in the hit HBO series True Blood, says his mom always warned him to have good manners as a boy growing up in Sweden. Meanwhile, the single Alexander insists he's not dating anyone, despite having been linked to actress Kate Bosworth. "I'm not dating anyone, those are just rumors," he says. Alexander, whose dad is Swedish star Stellan Skarsgård, 58, (Angels & Demons, Ronin, Good Will Hunting), will begin shooting season 3 of True Blood later this month. The first season of the hit series received widespread critical acclaim and won several awards, including a Golden Globe and an Emmy in 2008. »

How Robin Williams dodged death and returned to the stage

21 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

After heart surgery and seven years away from the stage, comedian Robin Williams is ready to storm Broadway with his one-man show

It takes some confidence to extend the Broadway run of your one-man show before opening night, especially a few months after undergoing heart surgery. But then Robin Williams has never been short of nerve. His lengthy career is due in equal measure to the fearless nature of his comedy and to the frenetic energy of his performance: he has a reputation as an entertainer that is built as much on his nerve as it is on his nerves.

Now, after seven years away from the stage, a relapse into alcoholism, a divorce and an emergency operation to replace a faulty valve in his chest, Williams is returning to live stand-up. His comeback show, which opens on Monday, is already one of New York's hottest tickets, and then later »

Review: Did You Ever See… Rounders?

18 November 2009 9:51 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the UK release of Steven Soderbergh’s whistle blower movie The Informant. Based on the true story of Mark Whitacre, an executive who reported his corporation’s price-fixing tactics to the FBI, Soderbergh has put a comedic spin on it. This relies heavily on the lead actor, Matt Damon, and Damon has won critical praise for his performance.

Since distancing himself professionally from Good Will Hunting co-writer Ben Affleck, Damon’s career has soared, and his recent Bourne series have made him a bona-fide leading man. So a good time, then, to take a look back at his first lead performance, in 1999’s Rounders.

Mike (Damon) is a promising young law student. He is intelligent, promising, and has a beautiful girlfriend. Oh, and he likes to play cards. By day he works hard on his studies, but at night he enters a different world. Up ’til now »

Anna Faris Gets Kidnapped In Wedding Banned

17 November 2009 12:20 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Remember when Robin Williams used to go dramatic? He gave us beautiful performances in Good Will Hunting andDead Poets Society. Hell, I even dug Jakob the Liar. The dude seems to have a good sense of what it takes to dig down deep and pull out a tough performance, even if it doesn.t match up perfectly with his comedic persona. Well, with movies like Old Dogs, those days seem to be long gone. In his upcoming Wedding Banned, Robin Williams will play a husband who teams up with his ex-wife to kidnap their daughter and convince her not to get married. Sounds like a grand old time, right? Now THR reports that Anna Faris has signed on to play the bride-to-be. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler penned the script. These are the guys behind Raising Helen and The Shaggy Dog, so you know it.ll be good. After Observe »

Kevin Smith 3 Movie Collection Blu-ray Review - Clerks, Chasing Amy and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back

16 November 2009 9:01 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I remember when Clerks was announced. It was a Sundance favorite and trailered along with Pulp Fiction. Having had some counter experience, and being a Star Wars nerd, Clerks looked like sweet elixir. And I went to see it opening weekend (in a double feature with Stargate), and was in the Kevin Smith. Revisiting his films Clerks, Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back on Blu-ray in the Kevin Smith collection is a chance to wrestle with what makes Kevin Smith great and somewhat terrible. My review after the jump.

Clerks is one of those films that - at the time - you wanted to root for. It was a small film from a filmmaker who scrapped together his pocket change and made a film, and the history of films like that which received a theatrical release were always encouraging. Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, etc. Now, now that »

"He shoots everything in Portland. He's good at making it look beautiful," he credited the director. Later, he added, "It's all about teenage love and obsessions. Beverly Hills, California — In early 2008, then-little-known actors including Robert Pattinson, Ashley Greene and Taylor Lautner traveled to Portland to shoot a small vampire film that they hoped would get a theatrical release. Barely two years later, "Twilight" is one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, with two Vancouver-filmed sequels rolling into theaters. Now, Pattinson is revealing plans to return to the city where it all began — and recommending the Portland-based Oscar nominee he wants to direct "Breaking Dawn."

"I probably shouldn't say this," Rob revealed to MTV News over the weekend, acknowledging that the wheels are slowly creeping into motion on "Breaking Dawn" getting made. "But I've heard that we're going to shoot it in Portland.

Matt Damon, from private campaigner to Hollywood's biggest star

9 November 2009 1:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports

Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.

Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

Entertainment Weekly Lists the 25 Best Soundtracks from the Past 25 Years

3 November 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.”  But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic!  And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!

Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump.  Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included.  Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).

If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

First off I need to apologize for the tardiness of this entry.  I was infected with the swine pandemic and was unable to do anything but utter “Bbbbraaaiiinsssss…” feebly from my bed.  Now I’m up and about again, so here we go.

One of the first things to do when making your movie is figure out who your main character is going to be.  Now, you may pick your plot first and then figure what kind of protagonist you want or you may pick your characters and write about what they do – it all depends on your style of writing.  In either case, understanding your protagonist(s) is very important since these are the people whom the plot revolves around, who we will come to know and love and who we will follow for the next 120 minutes.  They will be our tour guides through your movie so you have »
