Despite rainslick roads, Jack drives into better days., 10 October 1998

Poor Jack Smith- artist's block, bitchy girfriend leaving, and

teaching grade school children to chant "go to hell" is a sure way to lose a job-- but all these things happen and soon he and dog are out on the road. What I liked about this light-hearted romp was the ability of Jack to keep going despite the odds and the absurdity of the situations around him. Including the absurdness of some of the arts in general- both the uptown and the signpainter can be obsessed with their own importance. I also like the way Shawnee Smith played her role with double entendre as tart and saving angel to Jack. Larry Holden should get more recognition for work in this. Also, despite most of it being shot in a car on a rainy night- it was pleasantly funny and upbeat.
