Trivia for
Event Horizon (1997)

advertisement
  • The space suits worn by the actors weighed 65 pounds (30 kilograms) each. Laurence Fishburne nicknamed his "Doris."

  • The Event Horizon was modeled on Notre Dame cathedral. Its interior is filled with cruciform shapes.

  • The model of the Event Horizon includes a complete "X-Wing" from Star Wars as part of an antenna array. The model is visible on the lower portion of the Event Horizon during the first flyby by the Lewis & Clark.

  • Director Paul W.S. Anderson was forced to cut over 20 minutes of violent scenes so the film could reach the R-rating.

  • When the Lewis and Clark is first docking with the Event Horizon, the number of the main airlock is briefly visible: thirteen.

  • A book floats past the camera featuring a picture of the director and his name during the opening dream sequence inside the Event Horizon..

  • The Event Horizon was named after the theoretical boundary surrounding a black hole, within which gravitational attraction is so great that nothing, not even radiation, can escape because the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light

  • This movie was produced entirely within the UK, even the special effects.

  • Paul W.S. Anderson had originally hired British band Orbital to compose the music for the film because he had wanted to work with them since his directorial debut Mortal Kombat (1995) which had featured their music. Paramount executives balked at the idea of hiring unknowns to write music for a big budget film, Anderson then thought of Michael Kamen and the idea of "marrying" their sounds (orchestral and techno) together resulted in the film's final soundtrack.

  • The original script by Philip Eisner depicted the Event Horizon as more of a science lab for an unknown alien race as part of the reasons why the ship had disappeared for seven years. Anderson immediately discarded that idea instead of going for the "Haunted House in Outer Space" plot line instead.

  • The post production period for this film was really shorted from six weeks to only four after Paul Anderson promised the studio to deliver the film for its August 1997 release date.

  • The first rough cut of the film had longer versions of the "visions from hell" that were significantly edited during post-production, more blood, and a similar ending to the that ended up in the final theatrical cut and ran about 1 hour 55 minutes. The test audience did not like it and was then re-cut with an alternate ending involving what Director Paul Anderson calls in the DVD documentary, "The Burning Man Sequence" which he felt was a bit too much. The second test audience did not like this version either and had to edit the film to version that Anderson and the studio would be satisfied with. The final cut of the film is a hybrid of both the first and second test screenings with significantly less gore and intensity than either test screenings.

  • Production Designer Joseph Bennett had relatively little time to build the film's set and had to actually seek out a crew in Britan that could work fast enough to build and finish the sets before shooting began all caused by the film's short Pr-production period.

  • Andrew Kevin Walker wrote an uncredited draft of the script, some of it ended up on screen with one major deletion which was a sequence that ended up being cut from the theatrical cut of the film; a small sample of it can be seen on the Special Collector's Edition, as you see Laurence Fishburne's crew being introduced for the first time on another rescue mission. Director Paul Anderson would go on to say in the DVD commentary that he regretted deleted the scene, but it also didn't help the film's pace.

  • Director Paul Anderson and Producer Jeremy Bolt really wanted to put together a director's cut of the film and had planned to for sometime, but most of the footage was either lost or destroyed after the post-production period. A few of those scenes as shown on the Special Collector's Edition DVD, survived only in videotape form, some without dialog or sound effects along with a space walk sequence only shown by storyboards that was completely abandoned for budget reasons and the alternate ending with commentary by Paul Anderson.

  • Director Paul Anderson states on the DVD, that the "Visions of Hell" that were completely edited down were like sexual orgies and the original crew of the Event Horizon had died through painful sexual pleasure. Some of it can be seen in the film's documentary on the DVD.

  • One of the members of the original Event Horizon crew was British director Gary Sinyor, who directed "The Bachelor" starring Chris O'Donnell and Academy Award Winner Rene Zelleweger.

  • During the making of the film, Australians were in discussions about changing their flag (which never happened). On everyone's space suits you can see a flag of their country of origin. On 'Sam Neill's ' character's flag, it's an Australian flag but in place of the Union Jack, there is an Aboriginal flag.

  • The Character of Dr Weir, shares his name with an historical figure, Johann Weyer, also called Wier or Wierus. Weyer was a Dutch physician, Occultist and demonologist.

  • The hundreds of apparent metal bolts that line the corridors of the Event Horizon are actually power transistors in a TO-3 or similar package. This can be best seen when Miller rests his head against the wall when hearing Corrick's voice.

  • Doctor Weir has an interesting variation of the Australian national flag on his overalls (left upper arm). Instead of the current (2007) Union Jack and Southern Cross - the Union Jack has been replaced with the flag symbol of the Aboriginal people. This can be seen when Dr. Weir first enters the Communications centre when they are boarding the Event Horizon.

>>> WARNING: Here Be Spoilers <<<

Trivia items below here contain information that may give away important plot points. You may not want to read any further if you've not already seen this title.

  • SPOILER: The scene where Jason Issac's character D.J. is found by Laurence Fishburne hanging in the air with his chest cut open ran much longer with D.J.'s guts hanging out of him and some of it laying on the table. Paul Anderson used a mylar mirror on the operating table simulate the effect with Issac's actually hanging on wires. This can be seen in the DVD's Making of Event Horizon documentary.
