  • This is the third film in Kevin Smith's intricately interconnected View Askewniverse series (the others being Clerks. (1994), Mallrats (1995), Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) and Clerks II (2006)). The movies are all linked by characters, themes and events and each contains numerous references to the others.

  • Silent Bob tells Jay that "What he doesn't know about him could just about fill the Grand Canyon". In Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Robert Redford says the same thing to Paul Newman.

  • The sign for the Manhattan Comiccon notes that the event is presented by "Flanagan Events". This is a reference to Walter Flanagan, who played several roles in both Clerks. (1994) and Mallrats (1995). He was supposed to be in this film as Walt the fan boy, but his scenes were deleted.

  • Banky's comic "Baby Dave" is a reference to David Klein, director of photography for Clerks. (1994), Mallrats (1995) and this film.

  • The Button on Hooper's jacket scene says "The Black Man is God". It was found and suggested by Dwight Ewell.

  • When Holden and Alyssa go skee-balling, there is a coin machine with the name "Gottlieb" on it (a major arcade-game maker). Carl Gottlieb was the co-writer of Jaws (1975) screenplay, director Kevin Smith's favorite film.

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [hockey] Holden and Alyssa break up at a hockey game. Alyssa is wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. Holden and Banky are also playing hockey on a Sega Genesis, which Jason Lee's character Brody does often in Kevin Smith's Mallrats (1995).

  • Carmen Llywelyn who played Kim, Alyssa's lesbian lover, was the wife of star Jason Lee (credited as Carmen Lee). Joey Lauren Adams who played Alyssa was director Kevin Smith's girlfriend.

  • During the scene where Holden and Alyssa are playing darts, men are going in and out of the women's bathroom and women are going in and out of the men's bathroom.

  • The scene between Alyssa, Holden and Banky at the nightclub discussing problems with oral sex was originally written for Mallrats (1995), between T.S., Brodie, and Gwen.

  • Holden says he attended a school named Hudson - which is the real school that Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes both graduated from.

  • Kevin Smith wrote the script inspired by his experience with then-girlfriend Joey Lauren Adams.

  • Joey Lauren Adams wrote the song she sings. It was originally a country song but Kevin Smith requested they pump it up a bit.

  • Kevin Smith wrote the three issues of the "Bluntman and Chronic" comic book that Holden and Banky produced in the film, and then released through Image Comics. Inside each issue, Smith credited: Written by Banky Edwards and Holden McNeil, Pencils by Holden McNeil, Inks by Banky Edwards.

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [comic books] The main characters are all comic book creators.

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [jaws] The sequence in the club, where Banky and Alyssa compare cunnilingus scars and stories, parodies a similar scene on board the boat in Jaws (1975) between Hooper and Quint.

  • While lecturing at Indiana University, director Kevin Smith mentioned that the Jaws (1975) homage scene (Banky and Alyssa comparing scars) was originally intended for his film Mallrats (1995) but was axed by the studio.

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [star wars] During Hooper's convention speech about racism in science fiction, Star Wars (1977) and its sequels are discussed.

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [37] Several of the opening credits news clippings have references to the number 37.

  • Silent Bob (despite his name) has one of the longest speeches in the movie (see Quotes section).

  • Banky and Holden's studio in Red Bank, New Jersey is called 'Bank-Hold-Up".

  • When Holden and Hooper X are in the music store, that's actually Jack's Music Shoppe, on Broad Street, in Red Bank, New Jersey. Across the street is Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash, Kevin Smith's comic shop, and above it is Holden/Banky's apartment.

  • In the opening "inking" argument, there is a picture behind Jason Lee of a man in a straw hat. That is the character La Fours from Mallrats (1995).

  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [off-screen grab] When Banky asks whether Alyssa looks at herself in the mirror, Holden grabs him and pulls him from off-camera.

  • Before Mallrats (1995) was released, Kevin Smith had written this movie as a teen flick in the same vein as Clueless (1995), taking place in high school with Ethan Suplee as one of the leads. Since "Mallrats" failed at the box office, this film's setting and premise changed.

  • When Kevin Smith pitched the idea to Miramax, he also said that he had written the parts with his friends Ben Affleck, Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams in mind. Miramax, however, wanted to cast people who already had celebrity status, such as Jon Stewart, David Schwimmer and Drew Barrymore (these three were actually suggested). The film's original budget of $3,000,000 depended on Miramax's support. Ultimately, Smith suggested that he make the movie with his three original actors on his own, and Miramax could buy it for distribution if they liked it. Miramax owners Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein liked this idea, and gave him $250,000 to make the movie (1/24 of the budget of his previous film, Mallrats (1995)).

  • Holden and Banky are both characters in J.D. Salinger's novel, "The Catcher in the Rye". (In the novel, "Ed Banky" was a gym teacher who would let students borrow his car so they could make out and have sex with their girlfriends.)

  • The MTV execs' names, Jim and Shawn, are possibly a reference to Mallrats (1995) producers Jim Jacks and Sean Daniel.

  • Quentin Tarantino's favorite film of 1997.

  • This film was reportedly just two votes away from an Academy Award nomination, according to Kevin Smith's podcast.
