Pop Skull (DVD Review)

This unnerving slice of pill-popping, acid-tripping Midwestern life (now on DVD from Halo-8) feels like August Strindberg’s Dream Play filtered through the mind of retro-modern surrealists like The Manson Family’s Jim VanBebber and Julien Donkey-boy’s Harmony Korine. But filmmaker Adam Wingard leaps beyond even those cinematic transgressors in terms of stripping away narrative conventions, to the point where Pop Skull is less a narrative than a disaffected meditation by a depressed 20something pill addict, Daniel (played by perpetually spooked-out Lane Hughes, who also scripted with Wingard and E.L. Katz).
There’s no easy genre classification handy for this film. Even to describe it as “experimental” seems like a misnomer, since that implies certain art-house trappings—the movie feels more like flipping through the pages of a troubled young man’s diary, so “personal cinema” is an easy label. But what gives with all the images of ghosts,

Liz Smith, reporting on behalf of Variety, is hearing through the grapevine that Oliver Stone ( Natural Born Killers , W ) is circling a big screen version of "Helter Skelter."
The director is currently "in talks" with Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecuting attorney during the Charles Manson trial. Nothing is confirmed, however. Stone revisiting the '60s and taking on Manson? Feels like a natural choice.
"Skelter" was made into a tele-film in 1976, with Steve Railsback ( Lifeforce ) as Manson, and again in 2004, this time starring Jeremy Davies. Jim Van Bebber also made a pretty haunting Manson film of his own entitled The Manson Family .

Bruce Fletcher introduced me to David Gregory’s feature directorial debut Plague Town when it had its world premiere at Dead Channels 2008 and encouraged me to interview Gregory, which I accomplished during the festival. I now offer up that transcript in conjunction with Plague Town‘s May 12, 2009 DVD/Blu-Ray release from Dark Sky Films.
David Gregory is one of the international DVD industry’s most in-demand Bonus Features providers. He has produced and directed more than 130 “making of” documentaries on films as diverse as Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Wicker Man, The Deer Hunter, Faster Pussycat, Don’t Look Now, Heathers and Repulsion. As co-founder of the UK/Us DVD labels Blue Underground and Severin, he has produced many of the industry’s most widely acclaimed discs and collections, including The Final Countdown, The Alan Clarke Collection and The Mondo Cane Collection, which includes his feature-length documentary The Godfathers of Mondo.
