Kathy Najimy will play a police officer investigating an attack on Wisteria Lane on an upcoming episode of Desperate Housewives, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
You know Najimy from her breakout turn as Sister Mary Patrick in the nuns-who-sing comedy Sister Act and her co-starring run on the Kirstie Alley sitcom Veronica's Closet. More recently, she's guested on Numbers, Privileged, and Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva. She's also the voice of Peggy Hill on Mike Judge's animated show King of the Hill.
Desperate Housewives: Drea de Matteo on Wisteria Lane's new mystery
Executive producer Marc Cherry told EW's Michael Ausiello that Najimy's character and Teri Hatcher's Susan went to the same high school, where Susan stole her boyfriend.
Najimy's episode will air in October.

Since the days of Cosby, Cheers, Family Ties and Night Court in the '80s, NBC has worked hard to deliver a solid two-hour block of comedy programming. Seinfeld and Friends dominated the '90s, alongside forgettable shows like Suddenly Susan and Veronica's Closet. For a brief moment in 2007, it looked like the Thursday night magic was back with The Office, 30 Rock, Scrubs and My Name Is Earl. But then Earl jumped shark after shark only to get canceled and Scrubs migrated to ABC. The latest replacements, the dreadful Kath & Kim and the disappointing Parks and Recreation failed to earn "Must See" status, but tonight Community gives the lineup a nice shot in the arm. »

After The Time Traveler's Wife scored a fairly respectable little pile of poker chips at this weekend's box office, the news is breaking that the story is next headed to the small screen. Marta Kaufman, co-creator of Friends and Veronica's Closet, is set to write and executive produce an ongoing series that can take time spinning out the decade long romance of the novel at the same time as giving us stand alone narratives tied-up on an episode by epidsode basis. Quantum Leap, anyone? Or maybe Journeyman is more on the nose. According to The Wrap, ABC and Kaufman have been talking about the project "for years." Of course, it's no surprise that the light came on just now, when the film has proven itself in the marketplace. I was definitely not impressed with Robert Schwnetke's direction of the film adaptation. At best it was quite perfunctory stuff, while some »

Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has just turned twenty-two today. Welch, a rather impressive career actor, has definitely made a name for himself among the Twilight fan community. One of the biggest reasons for that, aside from his spot-on performance as Newton in the first film, is his geniality and openness with the fans. Welch has been a source of great new information, updates, and interviews for many months. Welch began his acting career in 1998, starting with television series such as Frasier, Veronica's Closet, Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place, before tackling the role of Artim in Star Trek: Insurrection. Over the past decade, you might have seen him on shows such as Walker, Texas Ranger, 7th Heaven, Norm, The Pretender, The Drew Carey Show, Malcolm In The Middle, The X-Files, Touched By An Angel, Judging Amy, The District, »

At the upfronts yesterday, Fox announced the renewals and cancellations of current shows — Dollhouse, Fringe and Bones are getting another season, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is not (damnit!) — and presented their new ones.
You'll be shocked — shocked! — to learn that, except for the black family comedy Brothers, there's not much racial diversity among the leading roles on Fox's new series. Or many prominent roles for women: the only new Fox show with a female lead is the midseason drama Past Life. I miss Sarah Connor already.
Fox will be bringing us the new Saturday-night talk show from Wanda Sykes in November, though, which features "Sykes's outspoken comedic perspective on current events along with topical, high-energy roundtable discussions."
Here's a preview of the new Fox shows, with summaries and trailers provided by Fox (courtesy of the excellent TV news site TheFutonCritic.com). I've also added my take on each series, »

Actor Ron Silver, who won a Tony Award as a take-no-prisoners Hollywood producer in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow," died Sunday at the age of 62. "Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning" in New York City, said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped found. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years." Silver's big-screen credits included "Ali," "Reversal of Fortune," "Enemies: A Love Story," "Silkwood" and "Semi-Tough." Besides "The West Wing," Silver was a regular or had recurring roles on such TV shows as "Veronica's Closet," "Chicago Hope" and "Wiseguy." He directed and co-starred in the 1993 TV movie "Lifepod," a science-fiction update of Alfred Hitchcock's "Lifeboat." "He was a talented actor, a scholar and a great believer in participatory democracy," Bronk said Sunday evening. "He was an activist who became a great artist and his contributions will never be forgotten. »

It's another sad day in Hollywood. After a two-year long fight with esophageal cancer, actor and political activist Ron Silver passed away on Sunday, in New York City, at the age of 62.
On the political realm, there's certainly a lot to note -- with his work and his switch to "9/11 Republican" -- but in the realm of Cinematical, it's the movies that matter. Silver's impact on Hollywood was not that of a superstar or critical powerhouse, but of an intelligent and talented man who became an indelible piece of the cinematic puzzle.
Critically, it's hard to forget his work in films like the Oscar-winning Reversal of Fortune, Ali, or Silkwood. There is also his television work, as he came into our homes with Chicago Hope, Veronica's Closet, and The West Wing. But for me, I can't help but think of his sillier gigs, and how his bouts with heavy drama »
