100 Episodes of Barney ... and those other people
We had already given you a picture post of the cast of CBS' How I Met Your Mother on the New York City backlot set, dancing around in suits. And Monday brings the actual 100th episode, with the big hints about the mother, for the two people that care. Most of us are watching for Barney, right?
CBS is promoting the devil out of the 100th episode, and there's as much behind-the-scenes footage available as there will be video aired Monday night. But it's really cool stuff, so we thought we'd share.
Obviously, Neil Patrick Harris is carrying the episode, and he's carrying the musical number, vocally. For backing, they have a full orchestra.
We know from her time on Buffy that Alyson Hannigan is really adverse to singing, but they do manage to get a line out of her. And Jason Segal »

We’ve been following NBC’s freshmen drama Mercy a bit here at the site and so far, it seems to be doing pretty well and has not been canceled — at least so far. With an interesting premise and a cast that includes relative newcomer Taylor Shilling and Buffy alum Michelle Trachtenberg, the show continues to be one of the surprises of the season and will hopefully last until season two.
In contrast to Mercy, Law & Order: Svu is not a freshmen show and is still going strong after several seasons. Both shows returned to the air this week after the holiday break. In case you missed the premiere of these shows, or even if you saw them and still want to relive the magic, we’ve got lots of video for you today — courtesy of our pals at NBC.
In addition to the recaps, we’ve also got previews »

Carrie Underwood will make her acting debut on "How I Met Your Mother" later this season.
The season 4 "American Idol" winner will guest-star on an episode of the CBS series, creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas said on a conference call with reporters Wednesday (Jan. 6). The episode will likely air in March.
Her character, named Tiffany, is a "gorgeous enigma" who catches Ted's (Josh Radnor) eye. "What makes her even more intriguing," the creators say, "is the fact that she's a pharmaceutical rep, or Pharma Girl, which according to Barney [Neil Patrick Harris] has replaced nurses and stewardesses to become the Official New Profession of Hot Chicks."
Despite all that, we're reasonably confident that she's not the character in the show's title. More likely for that role? Rachel Bilson, who guests in Monday's (Jan. 11) 100th episode of the series as a woman who'll play a pivotal role in Ted's future. Bays and Thomas »

More and more shows are doing musical episodes now. We've had The Simpsons doing several over the years, and then Buffy The Vampire Slayer had one too. Eli Stone had a lot of music and of course Glee takes it to a whole new level. Now How I Met Your Mother is getting into the act this Monday for its 100th episode. Here's a sneak peek. The episode is called "Girls vs. Suits" and you can see why.
Soon every show will have Neil Patrick Harris singing and dancing on it.

BBC America’s television series, Demons, starts off with a young man thrust into the deadly world of the supernatural. The teenager with a special destiny must either choose to be the hunter of vicious monsters or be the hunted.
As the dialogue boasts of references to Star Wars and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the series itself can be seen as a rip-off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Rupert Galvin is the mentor (Watcher) recruiting “the chosen one,” who just happens to be Luke Rutherford. Luke Rutherford is a descendent of the Van Helsing line (Slayers) who must do battle against the diabolical creatures. Luke’s normal life is thrown into shambles as he finally meets his godfather, Rupert, who reveals the family’s secret past.
Philip Glenister played the arrogant and chauvinistic Gene Hunt in the British sci-fi police procedurals, Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes. Now he »

Fantasy author Jackie Kessler is to pen a Buffy The Vampire Slayer short for Dark Horse Comics. The novelist's comic book debut will tie in with volume eight of the series and be released as part of the publisher's online anthology MySpace Dark Horse Presents. Titled 'Carpe Noctem', the story picks up after reality television has made vampires popular in the public eye, to the detriment of Buffy and her companions. It will introduce two new characters named Cyn and Ash. "The world has changed dramatically, thanks to Harmony Kendall. Vampires are in, Slayers are out," Kessler told Cbr. "'Carpe Noctem' shows what two vampires (more) »

Who's this now?
Well, this is an interesting twist.
Yesterday, we mentioned that Neil Patrick Harris had taken to his Twitter with a low-key appeal for votes in Man of the Decade, and had mounted what seemed to be a huge lead. Even once John Barrowman engaged via his own Twitter, we though maybe the 42x multiple Nph had in followers might make the race over.
Enter Jonathan Ross, riding on a white stallion, to aid his friend John Barrowman. Jonathan is, for lack of a better comparison for our U.S. readers, a sort of Jay Leno in the UK, except people don't seem to hate him. In fact they love him so much, he's got about 500,000 followers on Twitter. So when he put the story out there that Barrowman was going down to Nph, things took on a life of their own.

A friend sent me a quick reminder that Demons, the hunky-male, English take on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, gets underway tonight, after the final episode of Who.
About a young man who learns he's the last descendant of Van Helsing, the famous vampire hunter, he spends the next 13 weeks slaying all manner of supernatural beasties. Shirtless.
Christian Cooke stars as the young, buff hero.
Here's a preview:

Much has been said, as this decade has drawn to a close, about the depths of stupidity and inanity that have been the driving force of today’s popular media. It’s true—the aughts have seen reality television become the medium of choice for mindless entertainment, and a platform where the only necessity for becoming a star is having no shame. However, secretly, I believe that we are actually living in one of the great eras of television. With the growing popularity of serial shows on cable networks that used to be film channels (HBO, AMC, etc) the bar has been raised for the level of writing, acting, and production values we demand as an audience. Intricate serials like Lost proved that a show didn’t have to be a procedural to be popular.
One of my favorite things about watching long-term scripted dramas is they have the time »

Chicago – If you’re not watching BBC America, you’re not watching some of the best television available to you. A noticeable pattern in much of the network’s programming has been a number of series that reimagine or reboot classic character or series types like “Robin Hood,” “Primeval,” “Being Human,” and “Doctor Who”. The latest attempt to inject new life into something familiar is the entertaining winter diversion, “Demons”.
TV Rating: 3.0/5.0
Starring the great Philip Glenister (“Life on Mars,” “Ashes to Ashes”), “Demons” is a modern take on the legend of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” but also clearly inspired by more contemporary demon hunters of recent television. From the writers of “Hex” and “Merlin,” “Demons” is not quite as perfect as some recent BBC America offerings, coming off a bit too predictable and sometimes off in its juggling of tones, but it is a perfectly suitable slice of entertainment »
