The Rock actor, who recently put his properties on the market to pay off a tax debt, said that he found the experience with the silent performer "unsettling". Cage told Parade magazine: "I guess it would fall into the stalker category more or less. I was being stalked by a mime - silent, (more) »

The way to enjoy Michael Bay is to deny him his rights as a filmmaker. That is, to turn his fascism around and onto him. Instead of bludgeoning him, your power is denial, or reduction. You can limit his arsenal, so to speak, at home: you can turn off the sound, you can arrest the image, you can plumb shut it down if you want. Looking at Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen off and on these past few weeks since its DVD/Blu-Ray bow, I'm struck simply by the image-making because I've taken the film into my own hands, selecting what I want, proving Bay's advertising-bent history in that the film works best as a gloss—as pure spectacle. I've gotten the same thrill watching pretty clips on youtube, or vimeo, where all I'm looking for is a beautiful nugget. (In fact, the 30-second advertisements during this year's baseball divisional »

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming game-to-movie translation of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is the next great hope for adaptations of this sort. Video games have a spotty history in the world of cinema. In fact, that's probably a generous characterization. While a few have certainly made money, none have yet achieved that rare parity between critical and box office approval.
Bruckheimer's "Persia" has a shot though. The mega-producer has a great track record with event blockbusters: the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, two "Bad Boys," "Black Hawk Down," "Beverly Hills Cop" and a string of Michael Bay-helmed hits, including "Armageddon," "The Rock" and "Pearl Harbor." Okay... maybe not so much with "Pearl Harbor." Now we've got the latest on "Prince of Persia," in the form of a detailed runthrough of the as-yet-unreleased new trailer for the movie, which »

Variety reports that Josh Brolin and Matt Damon are looking to re-team with Joel and Ethan Coen for their upcoming "adaptation" of True Grit.
Ok, so Damon has never worked with the Coens before, but he did have a small scene in Finding Forrester, which starred Sean Connery who was in The Rock with Nicolas Cage, so it's practically a return. Brolin is certainly returning, having worked with the Coens on their award-winning No Country For Old Men.
Damon is in talks to play a lawman who teams up with U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges stepping in for the late John Wayne) and a 14-year-old girl that head into Native American territory to find the murderer of the girl's father. Brolin is negotiating to play the killer.
The Coens are directing and producing True Grit from their script, which will follow the original Charles Portis novel that inspired »

Mike Ragogna: Since your new book discusses the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, and Jerry Garcia, of course, there's going to be a lot of controversy surrounding it since everyone wants to see their heroes in a good light. With all the information that's already out there, how does your book differ from others on the subject? David Comfort: Well, take Lennon, for example. People want to know, "What was John Lennon really like?" There's no black or white answer to that, there's no black or white answer to any of these seven people. They had very volatile, changeable personalities. I mean, what John Lennon was like depended on whatever moment you met him, you know? He went to a shrink once, and the shrink said, "Even with your wealth, you couldn't... »

Chalk this one up under guilty pleasures. Apart from all the hard times we give Michael Bay for the Transformers films we still get a kick out of the Bad Boys films. At least Todd and I do, I can’t speak for the others. The first night I was ever questioned by local law enforcement here in Toronto [Vancouver back in the day is a whole other story] was the night I was going out to see Bad Boys back in 1995. It served as a launching pad for Michael who would follow the first film with The Rock the next year which pretty much cemented his place in the Hollywood action film scene. It would be eight years until Will Smith and Martin Lawrence would get back in front of the camera again for Bad Boys II. It did double the business of the first one. That second time it was a whole lot louder, crasser, meaner and more prejudiced, »

Deborah Ann Woll is one busy young woman. Along with her recurring role in HBO's "True Blood" and an upcoming part in Darren Bousman's Mother's Day redux, she has joined the cast of Peter "Gaga" Antonijevic's supernatural thriller Little Murder. The script was penned by father-son duo Gerald and Justin Di Pego.
Joining Woll and the previously announced Josh Lucas, Terrence Howard, and Lake Bell are Bokeem Woodbine (The Rock), Peter Jason ("Deadwood"), and Noah Bean ("Damages"). Littler Murder is set in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and centers on a disgraced detective (Lucas) who gets an unexpected shot at redemption when the ghost of a beautiful cellist solicits his help in finding her killer.
Per THR, Mind in Motion's Silvio Muraglia is producing the film, which has commenced shooting in Detroit and New Orleans.

Benjamin Kerstein in the New Ledger is so not a fan of everyone who’s so not a fan of Michael Bay: Everyone who writes about movies is now apparently required to hate Michael Bay. The ex-director of commercials and music videos, who has made some of the most successful films of the last decade—Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Transformers, etc.—has become, without a doubt, the bête noir of modern cinema; or at least of modern movie critics. The critical establishment has never really liked Michael Bay, but the recent release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which despite having been demolished by every respectable critic on both sides of the Atlantic, is hurtling swiftly toward the box-office stratosphere, was unquestionably the nail in the coffin. This week, Revenge became one of the top ten domestic films of all time with a gross surpassing two third-entries in »

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson steers Disney's Race to Witch Mountain our way as an adolescent escapist adventure stripped down from its outdated and more grounded quasi-inspiration, 1975's Escape to Witch Mountain. It is Jerry Bruckheimer for kids; illogical in every sense and carried by a brooding overly charismatic star with car chases designed to put an insurance agent into cardiac arrest. Today's youth should feel insulted but are more apt to be thoroughly entertained by Johnson's charm and flashy visual effects. What better way to grab a kid's attention than kick-start with a crashing spaceship and massive government hunt for its bipedal alien passengers (Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb) making a beeline to Las Vegas. The set-up is strong, until the aliens reveal themselves as predictably emotionless pale blond teenage kids delivering dialogue with blinders to a broader vocabulary. Hardly a stretch for Robb who has proven her acting chops before in Bridge to Terabithia, »

Lennon: The New York Years
Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, NYC Annex
If Rock is a religion, then John Lennon is at least one of its highest ranking prophets, if not the messiah himself. Aside from the holy scripture of his music, Lennon also left behind relics, some of which are currently on display at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, NYC Annex. For the devote follower of the Late Beatle, it is these relics which will make this exhibit worthwhile, whereas the average Sunday-Beatle fan stands a better chance of learning something new about one of rock ’n’ roll’s greatest martyrs.

My favorite thing about Megan Fox isn’t that she’s undeniably beautiful. It’s her willingness to say just about anything to comes to mind. She spouts consistently crazy things to the press and credits her big mouth for making her an even bigger star. At one point Fox claimed she was Zac Efron in drag and that High School Musical was about molestation…
So she’s outrageous, but this time her brash attitude has her in hot water with Transformers director Michael Bay. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Fox said what we’ve all been thinking.
“The humans are secondary to the robots because it’s a movie about robots… People are well aware that this is not a movie about acting. And once you realize that, it becomes almost fun because you can be in the moment and go, »

Well. I’ve taken some heat for reviews in the past, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen such… interesting reactions to one of my reviews as I have for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Of course I don’t really care - back in the day it used to bother me when someone flamed me for a movie review, but now I actually get a kick out of it.
Of course I’m not alone - go to any site that gathers up an aggregate of movie critics’ opinions and you’ll see similar numbers when it comes to Transformer 2. The number of positive reviews for the sequel to the highly successful first film is abysmally low:
RottenTomatoes.com: 20%
MetaCritic.org: 35%
TopTenREVIEWS.com: 1.7 out of 4
Even over at IMDb.com, where it’s mainly “regular people” voting for films, it’s only getting 6.7/10 - not bad, but »

Us critics, we don't hate Michael Bay. Well, not all of us, and not all the time. I wasn't a fan of his Transformers, nor Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and I haven't watched The Rock or Armageddon in their entirety in years, but I distinctly enjoyed 2005's The Island during its ill-fated theatrical run (gross: $35 million, cost: between three and four times that), and I still do as a decent sci-fi/action matinee outing.
But how?, I've been asked. It does after all bear every other trademark of a Michael Bay outing: explosions, rampant product placement, blatant racial stereotypes, explosions, perpetual dusk lighting, explosions, and a female lead constantly flattered by her wardrobe (yeah, a real woe-is-us scenario).Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Thrillers, Trailers and Clips, Scenes We Love

Blu-Ray Review
Directed by: Pj Hogan
Cast: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Kristen Ritter, John Goodman
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: June 23, 2009
Plot: A Shopaholic (Fisher) starts writing for a savings magazine while being pursued by a persistent debt collector.
Who’s It For? It’s moderately enjoyable even for Neanderthals such as myself, who don’t even know how to properly pronounce “Yves Saint Laurent.” But appreciation of fashion would be a huge plus going into this.
Movie:
Isla Fisher’s enthusiastic dive into airheaded spunk makes this brand-name littered movie not as torturous as one would expect. The sub-love story isn’t too heavy, as male counterpart Hugh Dancy is not as overwhelmingly charming as his name makes him sound to be. But a lot of the “fun” had with Confessions is more amusing than gut busting, as the film is a »

Plot: Autobots and the U.S. military have joined forces to form a special fighting unit called Nest, but when Sam (Labeouf) touches a piece of the cube, everything changes and an old Decepticon enemy comes back to reclaim the Earth.
Who’s It For? Teenage boys. But they’ll need to text during the film because there are some very boring parts. With the language and violence, I don’t think it’s really meant for younger children.
Expectations: I didn’t know what to expect, but »

You know him because he is awesome and because once his movies are over the entire set is on fire and his actors are lucky to come out alive. But just how well do you know the man behind the madness? How well do you know Michael Bay? With this week's release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen doing a Michael Bay quiz was a no brainer and I think I have come up with some interesting questions related to the director known for blowing things up. Check out the sample question below or click here to get started: Michael Bay's films, as of June 2009, have made $1.09 billion domestically. Transformers (2007) is his highest grossing film to date with $319.2 million, which one of the following comes in second? Bad Boys (1995) The Rock (1996) Armageddon (1998) Pearl Harbor (2001) Bad Boys II (2003) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters June 24, for more information click here. »

Tonight's the big night. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will premiere in thousands of theaters at midnight across the country. If you haven't been to La, you probably haven't ever seen entire buildings turned into billboards. There is some crazy advertising out here - and obviously it spreads to other big cities like Las Vegas. Tlamb (via SlashFilm) has posted a few photos of the iconic Luxor Hotel in Vegas wrapped with a giant Optimus Prime. The best part is what it looks like at night lit up (see below). Not to be geeky, but beyond the eyes, the glowing pyramid has multiple meanings, too (once you see the movie). Don't forget that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has at least three full scenes shot in IMAX! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is again directed by action film superstar Michael Bay of Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island, »

With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opening this week, it seems time to take a look back at the critical punching bag career of Michael Bay. Outside of The Rock, Bad Boys and Transformers people have destroyed and tarnished his films. While Pearl Harbor is undoubtedly one of the worst things to happen to humanity, Bay takes too much blame for films that are otherwise purely and greatly entertaining. The guy knows what he’s making and outside of that film we shall not mention, he never parades them as “the most important film in the history of cinema making.” His flicks cater to the twelve year-old inside us all that wants to kill the villain in the worst possible way or go up and save the world on an asteroid (and really, when you’re twelve, do you care about the science of it all or blowing up the asteroid and being a hero? »
