Limited to mass destruction rather than individual situations where humans are shown killed. The aliens annhilate major cities (Los Angeles, Washington D.C and New York are shown); massive fireballs destroy buildings and toss cars at people who run for cover. An alien attacks and kills a group of people, before wrapping its tentacles around another's throat. An alien is shot multiple times; it falls to the ground, and then shot in the head. Two large-scale aerial firefights are shown between humans and aliens where airborne planes and spaceships are shot and destroyed. A character sacrifices his life to destroy a giant space craft. Multiple characters die throughout the film, but non in overtly graphic fashions. Many characters are depicted with cuts and bruises, and some are injured.

the only real gross part of the film is when some scientists perform an autopsy on an alien. the head suddenly splits open and we see the creature's insides

one of Russell's kids states that he's sick and asks his father to pull over. he jumps out of the RV and we hear him vomit by the side of the road (nothing seen)

Characters smoke cigars as a celebration for "victory." Cigars are featured continiously throughout the film; a character turns to alcohol to relieve his depression and appears severely intoxicated in a few scenes, and drinks liquor continiously.

The silmutaneous destruction scenes show major landmarks being destroyed on a massive scale, with many humans killed.

A few mild aerial fight scenes; an alien attacks human beings a few times, killing some.

The scene in which the alien uses it's tentacles to make a dead scientist 'talk' for it may frighten younger viewers.
