Review
Peter W. Simeon (19 April 1999): You can rarely go wrong by buying a DVD from Columbia/Tristar, so I expected great picture and sound quality. Did the dvd meet my expectations? Well, almost. As usual the resolution is very good. This transfer looks like it was downconverted from a high definition source and has therefore only minimal aliasing problems. The colors are very good, altough there are some DVDs with more vibrant colors. What was not that impressive was the noise/grain. In some bright scenes the picture becomes quite noisy (very noticeable in the scenes where Nicole Kidman speaks to the camera in front of the white backgound or the sky in the opening scene). Darker scenes are much better, more or less noise free, except for a few scenes with highly saturated parts, where some minor chroma noise remains. The compression is good, considering the bitrate of 4 MBit/s, revealing only some minor artifacts like increased noise or some problems with textures in the background. In summary, this is still a very good DVD, although it is not reference quality. If you like the movie, you will certainly enjoy this disc. Peter W. Simeon (19 April 1999): The sound is very good, with large dynamic range and good frequency response. There are not many surround effects, the surround channels are mostly used for music and some isolated surround effects from time to time. The center channel is very good, letting you always easily follow the dialogue.
