In a bold vote of confidence, Starz executives announced plans today to order a second season of the ground-breaking new original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, set to premiere Friday, January 22nd at 10 pm Et/Pt. The unusual timing of the renewal, more than one month prior to the debut of the highly anticipated program, gives returning executive producers Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen and Steven S. DeKnight (who is also the head writer on the show) the green light to start production in New Zealand on 13 new episodes in the first quarter of 2010. "We couldn't be happier with the first season. Spartacus delivers on all levels - action, characters, intrigue, romance and excitement," said Starz Entertainment Evp, Programming, Stephan Shelanski. The Quick and the Dead - Blu-ray Review

9 October 2009 6:35 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

From director Sam Raimi comes the Blu-ray edition of The Quick and the Dead. Released theatrically in 1995, the film boosts an impressive cast of star talent that includes Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Sharon Stone. It is interesting to note that Sharon Stone was considered the star of the film and received top billing, above Gene Hackman and a then almost-unknown Russell Crowe. And DiCaprio is listed as an .and. at the end of the beginning credits. How is that for ironic? I remembered going to see the theatrical release and having no idea who Russell Crowe was, but I fell in love with him because of this movie. I fell out of love with »

Trailer For James Huth’s Lucky Luke Looks Incredible

5 October 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Thanks to the fine fellows toiling away at Twitch, I’ve been able to follow the buzz surrounding James Huth’s upcoming stylized western “Lucky Luke” for quite some time. The film, of course, is an adaptation of Morris and Goscinny’s comic of the same name, which follows a gunfighter in the American Old West who, with his ability to shoot faster than his shadows, fights an assortment of crime and injustice. Being an Asterix fan, “Lucky Luke” is name I’ve heard kicked around for ages, though I’ve never read a single panel. Judging from the French trailer, the live action feature strongly resembles both Sam Raimi’s “The Quick and the Dead” and Terrence Hill’s “Trinity” series. The latter makes perfect sense, as the comic was made into a television series by Mr. Hill himself back in the 90’s. If you’re lucky enough to be in France this October, »

DVD Playhouse—September 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

The Blu-Ray Review: The Quick and the Dead (1995)

15 September 2009 1:55 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin J reviews the Sam Raimi western.

Back before he became an "A"-list director with the Spider-Man movies, Sam Raimi was best known as the guy behind the crazy Evil Dead horror flicks. Raimi attempts other genres, however, and took on Westerns with 1995's The Quick and the Dead.

Rugged frontierswoman named Ellen (Sharon Stone) enters the lawless town of Redemption in search of revenge. Though intent on her mission, she becomes involved in the town's big Quick Draw Competition. There she faces off against contestants like cocky young Kid (Leonardo DiCaprio), reformed gunslinger Reverend Cort (Russell Crowe) and flamboyant Ace (Lance Henriksen). While this occurs, she pursues her vendetta against John Herod (Gene Hackman), another shooter and the root of much of the town's evil.

Wow - it's been so long since the release of Quick that I forgot Stone actually starred in the movie! If you look at the Blu-ray's cover, »

The Quick and the Dead (Blu-Ray Review)

11 September 2009 5:41 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The Quick and the Dead on Blu-Ray

Main Feature (1H 47M 46S)

Since the first time I first saw this film I have felt that it’s under-rated, not to mention misunderstood. The Quick and the Dead is directed by none other than Sam Raimi, famous for his wonderful gore-filled yet tongue-in-cheek Evil Dead trilogy, so it should come as no surprise that this, too, brings together a variety of genres.

This is of course a Western film and the core of the film stays true to the more common themes found in that genre. There is no doubt which of the characters are the goodies and which are the baddies and even the reformed bad guy causes no upset because you know he is a good guy at heart. This clear-cut approach comes from the earlier and more common Western films from the likes of John Ford in which everything is black and white. »

This Week on DVD: Crank 2: High Voltage, Dance Flick, Sleep Dealer

8 September 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Well, you know your options are pretty limited when Crank 2: High Voltage and Dance Flick are the two biggest DVD releases for the week. Not only that, but if you're really dying to see Dance Flick, you'll need a Blu-ray player because the standard DVD isn't out until a few months later. Also hitting stores this week is Alex Rivera's indie sci-fi film Sleep Dealer, the fifth season of NBC's The Office, and the inaugural seasons of Fringe, Parks and Recreation and Important Things with Demetri Martin. If Dance Flick wasn't enough to convince you, however, there's another reason why this will be the week that Blu-ray truly catches on: Sylvester Stallone's Over The Top. To quote Lincoln Hawk: "When you want something, you gotta take it." Dance Flick [1] (Blu-ray) Crank 2: High Voltage [2] (DVD, Blu-ray [3]) Sleep Dealer [4] (DVD, Blu-ray [5]) Valentino: The Last Emperor [6] (DVD, Blu-ray [7]) I'll »

Crank: High Voltage (Two-Disc Special Edition)

With Gamer out in theaters, the mini-debate about Neveldine and Taylor -- mad geniuses of action cinema or destroyers of all that is visually coherent? -- can continue. Never-say-die Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) comes roaring back to life for another adrenaline-fueled adventure, accompanied once again by the very game Amy Smart. It's the only new mainstream film out on DVD today, so be prepared to fight like a dead man if you want to rent a copy at your local shop. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

Twilight star Robert Pattinson: this decade’s Leonardo DiCaprio

9 June 2009 3:02 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Bright flashes greeted him at every turn. His face was the centerpiece of every magazine, and his name was a-tip every tongue in the free world. In 1997, Leonardo DiCaprio made his big break with Titanic, and the world would not forget his name. At twenty-three years old, DiCaprio had already earned one Academy Award nomination for his work with Johnny Depp and Juliette Lewis in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? and had stunned his fair share of audiences with his brilliant portrayal of Jim Carroll in The Basketball Diaries. Some were hard-pressed to forget his name after his newcomer addition to the cast of Growing Pains back in 1991. His work in Romeo + Juliet would capture the hearts of many, and his work with Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, and Russell Crowe in The Quick And The Dead allowed DiCaprio to pass muster with film aficionados the world over. Discuss: Underrated Raimi

30 May 2009 7:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The old-school Sam Raimi fans are having a ball this weekend (I hope) with the director's long-awaited return to horror, the very cool Drag Me to Hell. And of course all of you know Mr. Raimi as the director of the Evil Dead trilogy and / or the Spider-Man trilogy, but it's easy to forget that this filmmaker has one rather impressive batting average. Doubly so if you're into good-time matinee-style genre flicks! So here's a chance to look back over some of the man's other films, mostly ones you've heard of (and probably seen by now), but flicks that are certainly worth a fresh look every now and again. I'll start with one of my true favorites ...

The Quick and the Dead (1995) -- Raimi's ode to the old-school western is an addictively entertaining mixture of A) a great ensemble, B) tons of nifty visuals, and C) tongue-in-cheek affection for the old-fashioned western tales. »

Sam Raimi: Auteur For A Day

30 May 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

These days the one question that everybody seems to be asking me is, in their oh-so eloquent way, “what’s up with the new Raimi movie…any good?”  Now that I’ve seen it, I am very happy to be able to report, yes…yes it is.

The reviews are already in for Drag Me To Hell and I think Michael Gingold (of Fangoria - read his take here) and Allan Dart (of Starlog - read his take here) sum it up very nicely.  So if you’re interested in accurate analyses from writers that really seem to get the film and Raimi’s sensibilities, I wholeheartedly recommend you give those reviews a “gander”.  Since I’m coming late to the party, I’m going to avoid giving my thoughts strictly about the film and instead take a brief look at Mr. Raimi, his style and his work.
