20 Years of Summer Movies, A Love/Hate Relationship

7 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon, »

M*A*S*H Star Ogden Stiers Comes Out

6 May 2009 5:15 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

M*A*S*H star David Ogden Stiers has come out as gay - after years of fearing he would be denied roles because of his sexuality.

The actor first tasted fame as Major Charles Winchester on the hit TV comedy before finding steady work as a voice actor in several Disney projects, including Beauty And The Beast and Pocahontas.

But throughout his career, he was warned he risked losing work if he came out as a gay man.

He tells the Gossip Boy blog, "From the late 1980s until about seven or eight years ago, you would find certain individuals coming up to you, me, and advocating the position that since we were doing family fare that it would be best were the actors to maintain a certain palatability to parents.

"These parties likely had heard rumors or harbored suspicions about me and wanted to make sure no embarrassing incidents were forthcoming."

But he insists his reasons for coming out now, at the age of 66, have nothing to do with his profession - he wants to find a life partner.

Stiers adds: "I could claim noble reasons as coming out in order to move gay rights forward, but I must admit it is for far more selfish reasons. Now is the time I wish to find someone and I do not desire to force any potential partner to live a life of extreme discretion for me." »

M*A*S*H actor David Ogden Stiers finally comes out

David Ogden Stiers

David Ogden Stiers, the Emmy-nominated actor who first found widespread fame playing Major Charles Winchester on the TV series M*A*S*H and who later voiced many characters in animated Disney musicals, has come out in an interview with the gay Oklahoma City blog gossip-boy.com.

“I am [gay],” Ogden Stiers said. “Very proud to be so.”

The interview was published in March, but was missed by many media outlets, including this one.

Ironically, Ogden Stiers said it was his later, very successful career as a voice actor that caused his reluctance to come out any earlier.

“I enjoy working and even though many have this idealistic belief that the entertainment industry and studios like Walt Disney are gay friendly, [they weren’t always],” Ogden Stiers said. “For the most part they are, but that doesn’t mean for them that business does not come first. It’s a matter of economics… »
