Tony McNeal's Born That Way (Short Film)

29 November 2009 8:44 PM, PST | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

I bookmarked this short (Born That Way) from director Tony McNeal some time ago with the intention of posting it and then promptly forgot. Which is a shame because it's really is a very cool and very well put together. Anyway I've remembered now and you really should take a few minutes to check it out.

"When ex-con and hard-as-nails, Jake Green, finally gets a chance to see his daughter after six months, he takes her out for a quick bite only to wind up in the middle of an armoured car heist. The violent incident leaves a lasting impression on his daughter and influences her choice to pursue a dangerous and lucrative career later in life."

Born That Way stars Stars Kevin Gage (Waingro from Michael Mann's "Heat") who fits the role pretty perfectly.

Idris Elba joins the fantastic cast of ‘Thor’

20 November 2009 10:55 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Idris Elba was one of the few positives in the Beyonce thriller Obsessed, so his reported casting in the the upcoming Marvel epic, Thor, comes as great news.

Elba will be joining Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, (hold on, let me catch my breath…okay, I’m good) Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano. He’ll be playing Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard.

Thor will be directed by Kenneth Branagh with production to kick off in January.

Thor’s Hammer Strikes another Talented Actor as Idris Elba Comes on Board

19 November 2009 9:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you’ve seen The Wire, you know that Idris Elba is a ridiculously talented actor who has yet to become a massive success stateside.  But now that’s just a matter of time as he already appeared last season on The Office (which didn’t really utilize his talent but a lot of folks watch it, myself included), will appear next year in the comic book action flick The Losers and now he’s landed a role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel’s Thor.

Show some respect to Stringer Bell and hit the jump for details.

According to Heat Vision Blog, Elba will play “Heimdall; as the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.”  Now that’s pretty damn cool, not just because everyone else in Asgard is apparently too lazy to defend their own damn city, »

Idris Elba Joins Thor

19 November 2009 9:08 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Idris Elba -- who starred in last year's RocknRolla and in last season of The Office -- has joined the Marvel Studios production of Thor, says Heat Vision. Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard, defending the city's gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin. Heimdall is a character in the comics who battled Thor on many occasions, often battling Thor in order to restrain him at the behest of either Odin or Loki. So if we're lucky, we might get to see Elba kick some ass against Chris Hemsworth. In my mind, the more ass-kicking, the better. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Thor stars Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jamie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard »

Sam Worthington And Bradley Cooper Visiting The Killing Fields?

18 November 2009 10:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

You would think at this point that Danny Boyle has the ability to get pretty much anything made, no matter who stars in it. Dev Patel and Slumdog, anyone? But when he was talking up a potential upcoming project to MTV last spring, he said the script for The Texas Killing Fields was "really special," but "you.d have to have half a dozen super megastars for a studio to even consider making it." Now, apparently, there are two megastars attached, but Boyle is strangely no longer involved. According to Pajiba's insider source The Hollywood Cog, Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington will likely play the two lead cop characters, and Michael Mann's daughter Ami, of all people, will be directing. They have no idea how the project came to the second-generation Mann, whose only significant directorial experience is as second-unit director on Heat, nor why Boyle bailed on it. »

Besson, Reno, Portman, Oldman: 'The Professional' 15 Years Later

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman in The Professional

Photo: Columbia Pictures Is Luc Besson an overrated filmmaker? I think he's a fine director but reviewing his resume he's usually a pretty average writer and his movies are kind of hit-or-miss. But every once in while he sneaks in an effort that surprises you, makes you take a step back and think, Whoa, where'd that come from? My most recent such reaction came while watching his last directorial effort, Angel-a, a sweet and moving love story dropped into a hotzone trifecta of mediocrity including The Fifth Element, The Messenger and Arthur and the Invisibles. To that point, outside of Angel-a he hasn't made a substantial contribution to the medium since Leon - The Professional, a contribution certainly worth celebrating, and will be done so over the next ten paragraphs.

I didn't see The Professional in the movie theater. I watched it on VHS. »

Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington to Frolic in The Texas Killing Fields

17 November 2009 2:45 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Back in February when he was fresh off his Oscar-win, Danny Boyle told MTV he was considering a project called The Texas Killing Fields, which was in no way related to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but does speak to people’s fear of the Lone Star State and their decision not to mess with it.  The plot is mostly under wraps but it concerns two cops who discover that a recent murder in their jurisdiction is connected to the notorious “Killing Fields Murders.”

While Boyle ultimately decided not to do the film (he has since moved on to direct the survival tale 127 Hours), it has now moved into the hands of Ami Mann, daughter of Michael Mann (Heat), with Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington attached to star.  Click the jump for more details.

[DVD Review] Heat

17 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Near the beginning of Adaptation, Charlie Kaufman, while advising his fictional brother Donald in the fine art of screenwriting, he suggests sarcastically that he “explore the notion that cop and criminal are really two aspects of the same person. See every cop movie ever made for other examples of this.” Really, he could save the time and just watch Heat. Of all the police/cop/heist crime movies of the 80s and 90s, probably none quite so completely embodies that “we’re not so different, you and I” dynamic that has been the last resort of screenwriters since the dawn of Hollywood. Nearly fifteen years on, this is both Heat’s greatest success and its greatest liability, because while nothing following in its footsteps has equaled it in scope or clarity, some of its drama has been rendered inert by the sheer number of well-funded directors who have tried, as »

Hollywood and Its Antecedents: Michael Mann's "The Last of the Mohicans"

14 November 2009 5:30 PM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

The Last of the Mohicans screened in Chicago on October 26 as part of Doc Films' Michael Mann retrospective.

***

The auteurist defense of Michael Mann tends to overlook that his creative freedom came only after years of playing by Hollywood's rules and that even his most personal films exist within popular genres.  Mann's debt to modern Hollywood is most evident in The Last of the Mohicans(1992), a film whose very conception—a big-budget action movie with specious literary pedigree—reflects the cake-and-eat-it mentality of the latter-day blockbuster.  Over and over, it eschews detail that would allow us to better understand character, setting, and conflict in favor of violent action; and often, what remains of the former is perfunctory, and bound to cliché.  I can’t attribute these faults entirely to Mann: IMDb reports that his original cut of the film was around three hours and that Twentieth Century Fox rushed him »

DVD review: Public Enemies

13 November 2009 7:34 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Universal, rental and retail

It's a Michael Mann film, so of course the period detail is immaculate and the set-pieces are pulled off with aplomb, but Public Enemies is a strangely unmoving experience. Johnny Depp's John Dillinger is oddly neutral while his dogged FBI pursuer (Christian Bale) is a torturer. Ultimately, this lacks the sense of unhinged danger that you want from gangsterdom and get from Scorsese. Mann is a permacool control-freak and this is a long way from the strut of authentic Hollywood Hoodlumville. It's like Heat cooled down.

Blu-Ray Review: Michael Mann’s ‘Heat’ a Modern Masterpiece

11 November 2009 1:23 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Michael Mann might first seem the ideal fit for Blu-Ray. He’s a notorious perfectionist, apparent in every frame of his remarkable output of films that includes such great modern classics as “Manhunter,” “The Insider,” “Collateral,” and “Public Enemies”. But one of Mann’s best films, “Heat,” recently released on Blu-Ray, is an interesting example of a director who has a vision that shouldn’t necessarily be overly polished by the HD format. The film looks like Mann wants it - gritty, dark, and like, well, actual film. It’s a release that some buyers may think doesn’t look “HD enough,” but to this Mann aficionado thinks that it looks just right.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

As for the film itself, it’s one of the rare ’90s films that gets better every time I see it. It’s a battle of wills between two of the most legendary actors »

Heat and Logan’s Run Blu-ray Reviews

10 November 2009 10:26 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Catalog titles Ftw. I am one of those rare people who enjoy being “double dipped.” I like upgrading to Blu-ray if I love a film, because you only get to watch a movie for the first time once, and so a different and better transfer is a reason (at least for me) to get excited about a film you’ve seen a number of times. When I would go see something in the theater on multiple occasions, I’d often go to different theaters (or failing that, different seats). My reviews of the Blu-rays of Heat and Logan’s Run after the jump.

Heat is one of the great American films. It took me a while to come to that, and I still think that Michael Mann’s finest film is The Insider, but there’s no denying Heat. Robert De Niro stars as Neal McCauley, a high line criminal who knows how to rob. »

Up I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details.

Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. Monsters, Inc. Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. »

Heat Blu-ray Review

9 November 2009 10:12 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Though there are notable exceptions (Ali, Last of the Mohicans), it is not an unreasonable stretch that Michael Mann has made a career telling stories about cops and robbers. From Thief (1981) and Manhunter (1986) through Miami Vice (2006) and Public Enemies (2009), he has produced tense explorations into the cerebral underpinnings of what makes players tick both in and outside of our legal system. Heat (1995) could very well be considered his crowning achievement in this territory, and its two most iconic scenes epitomize what the writer/director's classic crime drama is all about.

The no holds bar shootout in downtown Los Angeles during a broad daylight bank heist escape is one of the most thrilling firefights put to celluloid and has been among my favorites to sample out of context on DVD over the years (and its all that more awesome on Blu-ray!). Not just a great piece of realistic, machismo gunplay, what »

Making The (Up) Grade: Heat

5 November 2009 6:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Every few years, it seems necessary in the course of critiquing home video releases to clarify and designate the difference between all of those terms that distributors and producers come up with to describe films that arrive in stores in a version other than their theatrical iteration. For example, "unrated" no longer simply means that a film is too bawdy or offensive to garner a proper MPAA rating; rather, in many cases it means that the studio re-inserted footage, and didn't bother to screen it for the ratings board at all. "Director's cuts," meanwhile, sometimes really reflect the original vision of a filmmaker for his movie, and sometimes just qualify as an alternate version that was supervised or approved by the director. And most importantly, none of these changes are an automatic indication that the film will be superior to the one that you saw in theaters, even if there's »

Discuss: Movies That Everyone Seems To Love But You

4 November 2009 7:31 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a little post about Movies That Nobody Seems To Like But You, and it was an awful lot of fun for you (over 100 comments) and me -- so today I thought we could flip it around because I happen to know for a fact that there are movies that everyone seems to love but you ... because for me, that movie is Heat.

Released in 1995, Michael Mann's crime drama was an unofficial remake of his made-for-tv film, L.A. Takedown, and is still considered one of the greatest crime films of all time. The story centered on an Lapd homicide detective and a career criminal (played by 'Method heavies' Al Pacino and Robert De Niro) in a battle of wits with Mann's trademark themes of masculine identity and how our work can define us as people. But, no matter how many times I have »
