7 Directors Who Could Handle ‘Dune’

28 October 2009 5:38 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

With the riveting news that Peter Berg is hopping off Dune and with Paramount's search for a new director come the names Neill Blomkamp and Neil Marshall being tossed around. Clearly, Paramount is contractually obligated to hire a director named Neil (which explains why Berg probably left). However, we here at Fsr are never content with the obvious. Instead, we'd like to throw out a few directorial talents we think could turn the new adaptation of Dune and make it something special. Hopefully, a few of the names will surprise, and you should be warned that we haven't consulted the Bene Gesserit with any of these names. So here they are, in no particular order: 7. Martin Campbell The Pitch: Despite not being named Neil, Campbell blew everyone away with Casino Royale. So much so that he nabbed the job directing Green Lantern, and people still don't realize he directed GoldenEye. He's »

New Trailer With Mel Gibson On The ‘Edge of Darkness’

15 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Its been some time since I was interested in a movie featuring Mel Gibson. In the past, his work in movies like Mad Max, We Were Soldiers, Payback, Braveheart and the Lethal Weapon franchise showed that he knows how to play someone on the edge who does what’s necessary to get the job done. Plus, those characters weren’t afraid to kick some ass. Now, as seen in this new trailer for Edge of Darkness, it seems Gibson is returning to the kind of role that made me a fan of his in the first place.

In this new film, written by William Monahan and directed by Martin Campbell, Gibson plays a Boston detective whose daughter is killed when a hit targeted at him goes wrong. Of course, he’s not going to let that one go so he starts his own investigation to determine what happened. Once he »

Edge of Darkness Trailer Creeps Into the Light

15 October 2009 7:28 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

It may be that 2010 is the year Mel Gibson returns to the limelight — 8 years after his last on-screen role and following tabloid mania that has shifted his image in drastically negative ways. He’s got two big projects on the way. The first is Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, and the second is Edge of Darkness from director Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale).

A remake of Campbell’s own 1985 U.K. miniseries, the film features Gibson, Ray Winstone and Danny Huston in a script by William Monahan and Andrew Bovell. Check out the trailer below for a great glimpse of what we’re in store for. Edge of Darkness is slated for release on January 29, 2010.

Edge of Darkness Movie Trailer and Poster

15 October 2009 6:41 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Edge of Darkness, featuring Mel Gibson's first starring role since 2002. Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) directs the movie, which is a remake of the very highly regarded UK mini-series from 1985 that Campbell also directed. Sadly, the trailer mostly looks like a routine potboiler, but it has a few moments that shine through. Check it out after the break. Originally Robert De Niro was cast as the character now played by Ray Winstone, so my first viewing of this trailer was all about reconciling how I'd once imagined De Niro working that role in comparison to Winstone's work. I like Winstone a lot, and he gets a couple of my favorite moments in this clip. And, really, things are going pretty well in this trailer as it sets up the story of Gibson's murdered daughter, a possible conspiracy and presents what looks like »

Edge Of Darkness Trailer Goes Live

15 October 2009 3:41 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Watch out sugar tits, Mad Mel Gibson is back with a bang and he's out for vengeance in Martin Campbell's hotly anticipated thriller, Edge Of Darkness.

Shocking recent real-life behaviour aside, it's good to see Gibbo back on the big screen and, with a director who reinvigorated the James Bond franchise not once but twice with GoldenEye and Casino Royale at the helm, we're expecting great things from this remake of the critically lauded 80s television mini-series.

As you can see from the brand new trailer posted below, the movie is set to be a dark tale of vengeance and conspiracy as Mel's veteran cop investigates the murder of his only child (Bojana Novakovic) and unearths a world of corporate cover-ups and government collusion.

The film, which also stars the likes of Ray Winstone, Danny Huston and Shawn Roberts, is due for release early in 2010 and you can see the trailer below or here. »

She may have captured the world’s attention as a Bond girl in 1995’s GoldenEye, but Famke Janssen is determined to break the stigma attached to such. Yes, she Can act, yes, she does have brains to match her beauty, and has proven so many times over since her rise to fame. Famke Beumer Janssen was born on November 5th, 1965 in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Though her name is often mispronounced in the U.S., growing up in Amsterdam she was known as Fahm-Kuh Yan-Sun -- in her native language of West Frisian, her first name means 'little girl.’ Besides the Dutch she grew up speaking, Famke also speaks English and French. Prior to moving to the United States, Famke attended the University of Amsterdam where she studied economics. Pattinson Not Working On Pedrero Film

1 September 2009 9:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Twilight actor Robert Pattinson has dismissed reports he's lending a helping hand to movie stuntman Peter Pedrero for his directorial debut, insisting he has nothing to do with Vauxhall Crossed.

The Hollywood hunk was alleged to be joining singer/actress Dannii Minogue and The Full Monty star Hugo Speer in Pedrero's new British spy film.

But Pattinson is baffled by the claims - because he hasn't signed up for anything with his two-time Harry Potter pal, according to GossipCop.com.

Asked whether Pattinson will be starring in the movie, his representative simply told the website, "No."

Pedrero performed stunts in all the Potter films, as well as James Bond movies Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough. »

Profiling Hogwarts' Teaching Staff In 'Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince'

16 July 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Before Bill Nighy confirmed he was going to be joining the cast of “Harry Potter,” he wasn’t being facetious when he complained that he was the last big British actor to not be involved in the series. With heavy hitters like the late Richard Harris, Kenneth Branagh and Ralph Fiennes weaving in and out of the series, who can blame him for feeling left out?

The professors at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in particular possess acting talent which comes from the upper echelons of British celeb royalty. Young Americans might not recognize all of their faces outside of "Potter," especially those who are masked behind beards and more extensive makeup. So we've decided to profile the top Hogwarts talents for you here; not their fictional professorships, but rather the reasons you should look for them in roles outside the "Harry Potter" universe.

Ryan Reynolds Takes the Lead in 'Green Lantern'

10 July 2009 7:41 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Variety brings word the decision has been made and Ryan Reynolds will take the lead role in the Warner Bros. superhero feature Green Lantern based on the DC Comics hero. Just this morning the report was Reynolds was competing with Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake for the part in the film which will be directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) with production expected to begin in January. Reynolds obviously came out on top. In the past Reynolds has been rumored as the lead in an adaptation of the comic "The Flash" and just recently played the part of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and is expected to star in a spin-off film of his own with that character as well. Green Lantern is already set for a June 17, 2011 release and Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Green Lantern Power Ring Up

17 June 2009 12:03 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Enough about Marvel, Spider-Man 4, Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers… What’s happening at DC? Well, Green Lantern is happening, by the looks of things. Seriously on the back foot when it comes to superhero movies (apart from Batman, and not counting more esoteric comics properties like Watchmen and V For Vendetta), there’s been little sign so far of the DC / Warner grand plan that group president Jeff Robinov outlined to the Wall Street Journal last summer. But the first signs of a DC resurgence may be emerging in glowing, green, romper-suited form, put together by writers Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti, and directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale).  According to an interview with Guggenheim at SciFi Wire, the movie is set to go in front of the cameras in Australia later this year, for a summer 2011 release. The writer, who delivered a new draft of the script last week, »

Sean Bean Has the Black Death

4 June 2009 12:24 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Sean Bean’s a cool mofo, isn’t he? Even while wandering around in the world’s most useless subplot (right Silent Hill?), I find myself struggling to suppress the hetero man-crush that’s been in bloom since the first time I saw GoldenEye.

Next up, Bean will appear in Severance director Christopher Smith’s latest genre offering, Black Death. Sean’s official site Bean-Land drudged up lots of groovy behind-the-scenes pics for the medieval epic about a group of Crusaders who embark on a quest to assassinate a necromancer during the outbreak of bubonic plague in England.

Black Death will be released theatrically in the U.K. by Revolver, but because there’s no MTV star power attached, we Stateside chaps will only get a DVD release courtesy of Sony Pictures.

First Impressions: The Conduit on Wii

27 May 2009 12:30 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

What up, Con-dude's and Condu-ettes? Adam here! Before I get into this preview, let's break apart a classic … Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64. First-person shooters are constantly being compared to it, and, apparently, nobody has lived up to it ... well except for Perfect Dark, which was made by the same developer, Rare.

What made those games incredible? Why can't anybody in the next-gen live up to a game that graced a dead console Twelve years ago?! In my opinion, it had to be the tight corridors, the unpredictable enemy AI, and a sense of freedom and pacing with a seamless (but non-intrusive) blending of puzzle-solving. There was always something interesting to do, and the freedom you had to solve the multiple missions made you Feel like you were actually in charge of the tale's outcome. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark felt like Real games, without the flash/crutch of cinematic grandeur defining the experience, »

The Robert Evans Co. has a first-look deal at Paramount, which will be first stop for the project. "We know the importance of the UFO series brand to ITV Global, and we will work closely with them to build this into a franchise," Evans said.

Green Lantern Shooting in Australia With a $150M Budget

16 April 2009 12:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

So now do you finally believe that they're actually making a Green Lantern movie? Every time some news like this comes out, the geeks are a buzz in a frenzy of excitement. It seems no one believes that this will ever happen, so when a bit of news about, let's say, the budget or shooting locations hits, everyone acts like it was just greenlit today. I thought we confirmed that last September? Anyway, THR reports that Green Lantern, to be directed by Martin Campbell, will shoot at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. Additionally, Warner Brothers has approved a $150 million budget for Campbell, so it should look pretty damn good. In comparison to Campbell's past projects, Casino Royale also had a $150M budget, The Mask of Zorro was made for $95M, and GoldenEye was made for $60M. In terms of similar superhero movies, Fantastic Four was made for $100M, Iron Man »

Cumming Kicks Off Scotland Week

5 April 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Alan Cumming kicked off the annual Scotland Week in North America by leading a parade of people through the streets of New York City.

Cumming was named the grand marshal of the Tartan Day procession on Saturday, and was joined in the ceremony along Sixth Avenue by bagpipers, dignitaries and students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, his former school.

The GoldenEye star was sworn in as an American citizen last November but he insists he was honoured to represent his home country in the celebration.

He says, "As an artist so much of what defines you and makes you unique is where you are from and the environment in which you learned your craft.

"For me, being Scottish and training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama both define me and make me incredibly proud.

"The older I get, and the more I look at Scotland from afar, I realise how much being Scottish defines me as an artist and as a human being, and how I feel more and more connected to it." »

James Bond Museum Opens in the UK

4 April 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Yours truly is a big fan of that point on the compass where movies and cars intersect, and I'm guessing there's lots of other film aficionados out there like myself. Hollywood's love affair with the automobile stretches from Fast & Furious all the way back to Bullitt, and even well before that. But there's one film franchise that has given us more drool-worthy cars than any other, and it's the one with the numerals 007 attached to it.

From the iconic Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger and Lotus Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loved Me, to the '71 Ford Mustang Mach 1 from Diamonds are Forever and the current Aston Martin Dbs from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, the Bond films have showcased a laundry list of cool metal.

Yesterday, Englishman Peter Nelson, a 48-year-old Bond prop collector and auto museum curator, opened The Bond Museum in England, housed in a former supermarket in Keswick, »

Fox Worships ‘Percy Jackson’

28 March 2009 3:57 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Fox has assembled an all-star cast to play figures from Greek mythology in Percy Jackson, a young adult literary adaptation directed by Chris Columbus.

Uma Thurman has been cast as Medusa, and I’m sure she was flattered to be thought of for that part.  Pierce Brosnan has been cast as Chiron and Sean Bean will reign as Zeus, putting together a little GoldenEye reunion.  Kevin McKidd, who was once rumored as Thor will play a different God, the ocean deity Poseidon.  Melina Kanakerides (”CSI: NY”) will play Athena.  Fox is still looking for an Aries, Hades, and Persephone.

The story centers on the 12-year-old, half-human son of Poseidon (Logan Lerman) who embarks on a quest across America to save his mother, return Zeus’ lightning bolt, and prevent a war between the Gods.  He’s accompanied on his journey by other demigods, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario »

Concert Review: The New York Pops Plays The Music Of James Bond At Carnegie Hall

11 March 2009 1:18 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

The music of James Bond has topped the charts around the world, as evidenced by this rare Japanese 45 Rpm release of John Barry's famous theme song. By Lee Pfeiffer

Last Friday's tribute to the music of James Bond at Carnegie Hall was a magnificent evening of entertainment. The New York Pops, under the direction of conductor Carl Davis, did justice to the canon of great film themes that have characterized the 007 movies. To the relief of Bond fans, the Pops did nothing to "soup up" the arrangements of the familiar songs, opting instead to perform the traditional arrangements. The two hour-plus event managed to incorporate almost all of the main title themes which were played more or less in sequential order, and it was especially rewarding to hear Burt Bacharach's The Look of Love included, despite the fact that it derived from the mostly-detested 1967 slapstick version of Casino Royale. »
