You could give Martin Scorsese just about any award you want and I don't think anyone would protest. Though he emerged at a time when American film was really blossoming, you could really only argue that among his contemporaries, Steven Spielberg is on the same level. Even then, I'm not certain Spielberg has been as consistent or as daring as Scorsese has in his career. They're also shooting for different goals most of the time.
A couple years ago, Scorsese finally got his Oscar, even if it's not the best example of his work and certainly not the first time he earned the award. At the Golden Globes in January, Scorsese will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field." Spielberg, incidentally, won this past year.

For my money, Martin Scorsese is one of the most influential filmmakers working in Hollywood today, and his films are nothing short of inspirational, provocative labors of love and life. It seems the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also agrees as Variety reports that he will be this year's recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award recognizing a person's outstanding contribution to the entertainment field, which just last year was given to Scorsese's longtime friend, fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Scorsese will be honored by several of his peers and collaborators when the show (hosted by Ricky Gervais) airs live January 17th. Scorsese has received two Golden Globe Awards for his work as director on The Departed and Gangs of New York as well as nominations in directing for Casino, Age of Innocence, Goodfellas and Raging Bull. As overly-long and boring as the awards shows usually are, I love these lifetime achievement »

In January, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) will bestow the Honorary Cecile B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese for “his outstanding contribution to the entertainment field,” to which we say “Congratulations, Mr. Scorsese.” Of course, any award honoring Scorsese’s career is well-earned by the prolific and influential director. His lengthy and diverse filmography naturally contains movies which flopped and received no support from film critics, but when you look at his hits, he has left an unforgettable stamp on not only American cinema, but on audiences the world over. That his work continues to improve and defy simple definition is an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers and a challenge to his peers. There’s only one complaint people have about the awards Scorsese receives: they’re overdue.

What could Levi Johnston possibly gain by posing naked for Playgirl? —Babs G., via the Answer B!tch inbox You mean besides money and the eternal high that comes with making Sarah Palin miserable? As the Jews might say, dayenu, that would have been enough. For women, there are tons of reasons for posing nude: Sharon Stone said she did it for money right after appearing in Total Recall. It sure didn't hurt, given that she later went on to do stuff like Basic Instinct and Casino. We won't even begin to discuss the ongoing successes of The Girls Next Door. Chicago – Last Saturday at the Chicago International Film Festival was a very important debut for the new film “Chicago Overcoat,” directed by newcomer Brian Caunter. The hometown audience gave big thumbs up to the gritty mobster film.
Filmed entirely on location in and around the Windy City, Chicago Overcoat features a veteran of “The Sopranos,” Frank Vincent (who played Phil Leotardo on that program and here plays aging hitman Lou Marazano). Lou is juggling a life-changing “final” assassination assignment, his daughter’s family problems and the nagging indignities of old age.

Sharon Stone nearly "killed herself" making 'Casino'. Recalling her preparation for the role - which saw her nominated for the 1995 Best Actress Academy Award - Sharon said: "I nearly actually physically killed myself making 'Casino' "We did the death scene on the last day because Scorsese knew I wanted to get just so completely skinny and out of it. What the hell happened to Sharon Stone? She was a jobbing D-lister for years before a breakthrough role in Basic Instinct thrust her onto the A-list but while there she did little of note except for a solid performance in Martin Scorsese's (not as good as Goodfellas) gangster-epic Casino before disappearing into charity-work, red-carpet appearances, taking shocking roles in terrible films, and posing topless at the age of 51.
Then, just when we were about to forget her, here she is in the magazine Prestige telling us all about how she's set to start filming a new film in London and Rome alongside Chris Evans and Carice Van Houten.
"It's about a male prostitute in London who loses the older woman who's been taking care of him, and the call-out agency he's worked for is tired of his behaviour and don't want to send him out any more. He goes »

Hello, Jose here to remind you all that it's Madonna's birthday!
The Queen of pop/ businesswoman/ kabbalist/ mother/ 90's tabloid fodder/ safe sex advocate/ sex advocate/ entrepeneur/ icon is celebrating her 51st birthday today (and with those arms!). But along with everything she's done, many people forget (on purpose mostly...) that she's also an actress/director. The notorious perfectionist has never been able to master the cinematic arts, even if she tries and tries and tries. But since it's her birthday we should acknowledge that not all she's done for the silver screen is bad and since we can't take a holiday to get into the groove with her, here's...
51 Reasons to Celebrate Madonna... in the Movies!
51. Daring to take on a role created by Katharine Hepburn...sort of in Who's That Girl.
50. Her endorsement of Michael Moore.
49. Setting a whole new clothing trend with Desperately Seeking Susan.
48. Her deep love for classic films. »

Daughter of famed crooner Dean Martin, Deana Martin, recently publicly revealed that she Like likes Johnny Depp as a candidate to play the role of her father in a Dean Martin biopic (just ignore the whole Electra Complex thing):
“[Depp] is a tremendous actor, he has that charm, that swagger, and the resemblance of my father is there” Martin said. “I’m sure he would do the role justice!”
Its difficult to discern from her comment whether she’s expressing her desire to marry Depp and have lots and lots of babies, or whether she’s actually involved in casting. As of right now, Martin has no confirmed role in production; she’s merely expressing her number one pick for the role. However, though her involvement is in question, The Examiner reveals that this latest attempt at a Dean Martin biopic has already been penned by Bonnie Hunt and is »

The people have spoken, and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has been voted the best Vegas flick, according to Film Junk readers. A little unexpected, but a great choice nonetheless! Martin Scorsese's Casino came in a fairly close second, while Ocean's Eleven and Swingers were at #3 and #4 respectively. The remainder of the choices trailed pretty far behind the top 4, with Viva Las Vegas all the way down at the bottom. Where's the love for Elvis? 1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- 32.8% 2. Casino -- 25.6% 3. Ocean's Eleven (Remake) -- 14.1% 4. Swingers -- 12.2% 5. Very Bad Things -- 4.6% 6. Rain Man -- 4.2% 7. Diamonds Are Forever -- 1.9% 7. The Cooler -- 1.9% 9. Swingers (1996) Directed by Doug Liman It really isn't hard to see why this film has acquired a cult following. The atmosphere is laid back, the dialogue is some of the best in any 90's comedy, the characters are appealing and well-drawn, the casting is perfect, the soundtrack is great, and the situations are honest and real. Memorable quotes: You know what you are? You're like a big bear with claws and with fangs... ...big fucking teeth, man. Yeah... big fuckin' teeth on ya'. And she's just like this little bunny, who's just kinda cowering in the corner. Shivering. Yeah, man just kinda... you know, you got these claws and you're staring at these claws and your thinking to yourself, and with these claws you're thinking, "How am I supposed to kill this bunny, how am I supposed to kill this bunny?" And you're poking at it, you're poking at it. »

The thing I've always loved about Martin Scorsese is that the man lives to tell you a story. He piles on the details and approaches every angle -- and as a result he creates living breathing people -- and thanks to him, his crime flicks are about as close to the mob as I need to get. When Casino was released in 1995, it was considered Scorsese's return to the world of crime after taking a little diversion with films like Age of Innocence and Cape Fear. But, the comparisons between Casino and Goodfellas were inevitable, and unfortunately Casino was branded the inferior film. Now I'm not denying the genius of Goodfellas, but I stand by the fact that Casino is a kick-a** film in its own right.Filed under: Universal, Fandom, Trailers and Clips, Scenes We Love
