10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Mel Gibson's Scotland fears

31 October 2009 2:03 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Mel Gibson thinks Scotland would make him get drunk.

Mel - a recovering alcoholic who was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in 1984 and 2006 - said he hasn't been back to the UK country since shooting 'Braveheart' in 1995 because he fears it would have a damaging effect on him .

He said: "I haven't gone back since because I'm afraid. I'd never get sober for one thing, and to have to run around in a dress... it's cold up there!"

Despite his reluctance to return, the 53-year-old 'What Women Want' star admits Scotland still holds a special place in his heart.

He added: "On the way to the premiere in Scotland the crowd was 50-deep and I couldn't believe there was so much feeling and fervour about the subject. It hit a chord, definitely."

Gibson Praises Political Impact Of Braveheart

30 October 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood actor Mel Gibson is convinced his hit 1995 movie Braveheart paved the way for devolution in Scotland - insisting the movie helped bring about political change.

The U.K. government handed autonomy to the country in 1998, forming the Scottish Parliament and allowing the Scots to handle their own affairs on matters including education, environment and healthcare.

Gibson is adamant Braveheart, which was released two years before a referendum in the country on the subject of devolution, helped Scotland's quest for independence.

He says, "I became really aware of what a piece of art could do to change things. Scotland had received partial autonomy, but I think the film started the ball rolling on some stuff. On the way to the premiere in Scotland the crowd was 50-deep and I couldn't believe there was so much feeling and fervour about the subject. It hit a chord, definitely." »

Mel Gibson is going through the male menopause

Mel Gibson's acting style has changed now he's gone through the "male menopause."

The 'Braveheart' star - who directed, produced and starred in the Oscar-winning epic - says his approach to filmmaking has completely changed from how he was when he worked on the 1995 action movie.

In an interview with the Scotsman newspaper, he said: "I'm not sure exactly what that is, but it used to mean a lot more. Maybe that sounds like I'm throwing it away and I'm not, I'll still do the best damn job I can, but it doesn't mean the same thing. I'm going to get the answer for myself one of these days. It's the male menopause, that's what it is."

The Hollywood star admits his career has slowed down over the years, but Mel says he tried hard to use this time carefully and improve his skill.

Website Boss Vows Legal Action Over Gibson Probe

20 October 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The boss of a celebrity website has threatened legal action after his phone records were obtained by cops investigating media leaks following Mel Gibson's infamous drink-driving arrest.

Harvey Levin, owner of U.S. entertainment site TMZ.Com, slammed the L.A. police force for checking through his call records while they were trying to uncover who had tipped off the TMZ newsroom about anti-Semitic remarks Gibson made during the 2006 arrest.

The phone records showed two calls were made from arresting officer Sheriff's Deputy James Mee's home to TMZ on the day the Braveheart star was taken into custody. Investigators eventually declined to charge Mee for the alleged tip-off.

However, Levin is fuming his private records were dragged into the investigation - insisting cops broke federal laws.

During a speech at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on Monday, he said, "It breaks federal law. It breaks state law. It's outrageous. We've met with lawyers and are charting our course of action. This is not going to go away."

Following the arrest, Gibson was forced to attend a 12-step alcohol abuse program for 11 months, give up his driving license for 90 days and apologised to Jewish leaders for his comments.

He successfully won his bid to clean the drink driving charge from his record earlier this month. »

New Trailer With Mel Gibson On The ‘Edge of Darkness’

15 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Its been some time since I was interested in a movie featuring Mel Gibson. In the past, his work in movies like Mad Max, We Were Soldiers, Payback, Braveheart and the Lethal Weapon franchise showed that he knows how to play someone on the edge who does what’s necessary to get the job done. Plus, those characters weren’t afraid to kick some ass. Now, as seen in this new trailer for Edge of Darkness, it seems Gibson is returning to the kind of role that made me a fan of his in the first place.

In this new film, written by William Monahan and directed by Martin Campbell, Gibson plays a Boston detective whose daughter is killed when a hit targeted at him goes wrong. Of course, he’s not going to let that one go so he starts his own investigation to determine what happened. Once he »

Fox to Tell Moses Story with ‘300′ Visuals

13 October 2009 1:23 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

20th Century Fox is planning to re-tell the biblical story of Moses using the visual style and modern effects of Zack Snyder’s 300. This is the first major acquisition for new Fox chief Peter Chernin.

The story will start with Moses’ near death experience as an infant, his adoption into the Egyptian royal family, “defiance of the Pharaoh and deliverance of the Hebrews from enslavement.” I can’t wait for a Gerard Butler type to yell, “Let my people Gooooo!” Spartan style.

According to Variety, the idea was pitched by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who just completed the script for a “re-imagining” of Moby Dick for director Timur Bekmambetov. They’re going for a feel closer to Braveheart than Charlton Heston’s The Ten Commandments, though I doubt Mel Gibson will be involved with this one…

Moses Kicking Ass – Coming To A Theatre Near You

12 October 2009 5:20 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Picture if you will, a landmark film in the history of cinema, The Ten Commandments. No doubt you can already see Charlton Heston in dirty robes, acting all fatherly and holy and what not. Now throw in some Spartans, and Mel Gibson’s William Wallace for good measure – you now have yourselves the latest reimagining of Moses’ classic tale, according to Variety.

Peter Chernin and Twentieth Century Fox are developing a “retelling” of the story of Moses, reeds, slavery, exodus – the lot. And according to their sources, the film will be more “Braveheart” than “Songs of Praise“:

The script will be written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, who recently completed a scripted retelling of Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” for director Timur Bekmambetov at Universal.

Moby Dick” was pitched as a “300″-like reimagining of the Melville story as a visually stunning action piece, and the story of Moses is conceived similarly. »

James Horner's Avatar Score Promises to Be 'Hugely Cinematic'

7 October 2009 11:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I normally don't talk about movie scores before a movie comes out, but today I'm making an exception because it's Avatar, and I love James Cameron. MovieScore Magazine recently did an interview with Mike Knobloch, the executive VP of Fox Music, talking about composer James Horner (known for his work on movies like Braveheart, Apollo 13, Titanic) and his score for Avatar. While this could've been just another interview, Knobloch went all out, saying that the score he's working on will be "epic" and "hugely cinematic." Anyone else getting chills just thinking about it? Okay, sure that was cheesy, but I love great movie scores! "Horner is doing a brilliant job of creating music that transports us to another world, but supports the film using the traditional orchestral conventions to make a sound that’s hugely cinematic," Knobloch explained. He also goes on to says that Horner's score is "a »

Mel Gibson's Tirade Target Off the Hook in Leak Investigation

7 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

If Mel Gibson drunkenly accuses Jews of being responsible for all the wars in the world and no one hears about it, did it ever really happen? Well, we all heard about it, so it's safe to say it happened. But while Gibson has since paid the price in the court of public opinion for what he said, it's still unclear who leaked Gibson's arrest report, which included a recounting of the Braveheart star's supremely stupid comments, to TMZ. The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office said Wednesday it will not be filing any charges against Sheriff's Deputy James Mee, who busted the actor for driving under the influence in 2006 and ended up on the receiving end of an anti-Semitic... »
