I firmly believe that in time "Unhappily Ever After" will be regarded as the anarchic, absurdist masterpiece of television de-construction that it truly is. One of my favorite moments in TV history involved when, after killing Jennie off in a tanning-bed accident but keeping her around as a regular by having her haunt the family, someone announcing himself as a WB programming executive appeared on-camera at the end of an episode, announced that the whole "ghost" concept just wasn't working, and brought Jennie back from the dead as though nothing had happened. Nobody involved in "Unhappily" was interested in caring enough to take the program seriously (even as a television show), and the result was inspired satirical lunacy/joy.
