The Wanda Sykes Show: Second Week Decline; Cancel or Keep It?

38 minutes ago | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Stand-up comic and actress Wanda Sykes recently unveiled her vision of a Saturday night talk show. Is it a keeper or should she stick to The New Adventures of Old Christine?

The Wanda Sykes Show is a late night talk show that airs once a week. It's hosted by Sykes and her trademark biting wit to a monologue, skits, and interviews. Comedian Keith Robinson co-stars as her sidekick.

The show debuted on November 7th to a 2.2 household rating. According to Variety, that placed the Wanda Sykes premiere 16% higher than the average of MADtv a year earlier (1.9/4) and double the performance of Talk Show with Spike Feresten from last winter (1.1/2).

The first episode was also in part competing against the highest-rated episode of Saturday Night Live of the season.

Ratings: Wanda Sykes Looks Solid in Debut

8 November 2009 10:46 AM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Josef Adalian

Official numbers won't be in until Thursday, but at least in the nation's biggest TV markets, "The Wanda Sykes Show" is off to a solid start for Fox.

According to Nielsen metered market overnight data, Saturday's "Wanda" bow averaged a 2.2/5 from 11 p.m.- midnight. That's up 16 percent from what "Mad TV" averaged last fall in the overnights.

What's more, "Wanda" dramatically improved on the numbers Fox did last January and February, when the network experimented with airing "Talkshow with Spike Feresten" in the 11 p.m. timeslot... »

TV Alert: "The Wanda Sykes Show" premieres this Saturday

5 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

One of the high points on last year's Lgbt Roller Coaster Ride of Terror was Wanda Sykes coming out as gay and married. It's not every day our community gets an intelligent, hilarious, high-profile woman of color as a spokesperson — especially one that isn't afraid pull punches.

This Saturday night (Nov. 7), Fox is launching The Wanda Sykes show, which should be the perfect platform for Sykes to push as many buttons as the FCC will allow.

Wanda has been making the daytime talk show rounds over the last few weeks, stopping in to chat with Oprah, Joy Behar on Hln and the women of The View. In every interview, she's spoken openly and affectionately about her wife and their six-month-old twins.

In fact, she and Oprah got philosophical over her sexual orientation, with Oprah saying:

When you admitted you are gay and open — not that there needed to be an »

Hatchet Director Adam Green and Grace Director Paul Solet Want to Interest You in a Fackin’ Jack Chop

28 October 2009 4:27 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s almost Halloween and you haven’t even started carving your pumpkin!  Using just a regular knife will be far too arduous and you’re starting to think of just picking up a plastic pumpkin from Wal-Mart.  Stop!  Adam Green and Paul Solet, the directors of “Hatchet” and “Grace”, respectively, have just the solution for you: Jack Chop!

Done in the style of an infomercial gone horribly wrong, Solet slathers his words in a thick New England accent and just lets the gore go to work.  Spewing profanities and the inability to die from blood loss, Solet may not make the best case for the Jack Chop but he definitely makes the video worth watching.  It reminded me of the MadTV sketch with Will Sasso as Paul Timberman, an equally accident-prone TV pitchman.  Hit the jump to see both videos.  I’ll even throw in a fackin’ glowstick.

Thanks to twitch for finding this. »

Although she made a name for herself on MADtv and The King of Queens, Nicole Sullivan says the biggest test of her acting skill came earlier this year when she tried to hide her pregnancy with son Beckett Edward, now 8 weeks, from the cast and crew of Lifetime’s Rita Rocks.

“I got pregnant before the end of last season and was so sick at work,” she explains in a new interview, “and one day I had to come in and lie down for 15 minutes.”

The show sent a doctor to Nicole’s dressing room, where the »

Rita Rocks star and MADtv alum Nicole Sullivan is known for delivering laughs. But delivering her second son, Beckett Edward, on August 31st was a major reality check for the actress.

“I’m no spring chicken,” Nicole, who turned 39 in April, told Life & Style during an exclusive interview at her Los Angeles home. “I feel very lucky I got pregnant twice.”

Although she didn’t experience the same levels of nausea, sciatic nerve pain or insomnia that she did while pregnant with her eldest son, Dashel Pierce, now 2, Beckett’s arrival had its share of complications. Nicole had planned to give birth to the 8 lbs. »

Rita Rocks season two -- An early look

5 October 2009 8:25 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Rita Rocks is premiering its second season on Lifetime tonight, along with Sherri Shepherd's new sitcom, Sherri. For those of you who haven't seen the show before, Rita stars Mad TV's Nicole Sullivan, who plays Rita, a suburban mom of two daughters who plays in a rock band on the side. Rounding out her garage band are her friends Owen (Ian Gomez), Patty (Tisha Campbell-Martin) and Kip (Ricky Ullman), Rita's daughter Hallie's (Natalie Dreyfuss) boyfriend.

The second-season premiere doesn't really focus on Rita's music so much. While we do still see her at practice, she's mainly dealing with mom stuff, specifically in relation to Hallie, her oldest daughter. In fact, what we have is a perennial family-sitcom classic-- the parent having to give the child "The Talk."

Recast scoop: 'Gilmore' girl out, 'Mad' woman in!

25 September 2009 10:43 AM, PDT | EW - Ausiello Files | See recent EW.com - The Ausiello Files news »

Mad Men's infamous foot-dicing secretary found another job! Crista Flanagan, who became a permanent part of Mad Men lore on Sunday when her character ran over an ad exec's foot with a lawn tractor, is joining ABC's new Kelsey Grammer sitcom, Hank. The actress, who also spent three years on MADtv, will play the recurring role of Dawn, the wife of David Koechner's Grady and sister-in-law to Grammer's Hank. She replaces Gilmore Girls alum Melissa McCarthy, who dropped out when she landed a supporting role in the Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy, Life as We Know It. The fate of Flanagan's Mad alter ego, Lois, was left up in the air in last week's episode, although it's hard to imagine Sterling Cooper keeping her on in the wake of hoof-gate. »

The Story: "Casanova" by Matt Fraction (W) and Gabriel Bá (A) - Image Comics

What It's About: The title hero, Casanova Quinn, is part James Bond, a little bit Doctor Who and a dash of Buckaroo Banzai. He's an alpha male super-spy for hire with with a dad out to kill him and beautiful lady robots around every corner. His first volume of adventures in "Casanova: Luxuria" smacks of Nick Fury bravado and Terry Gilliam-style absurdity.

His father Cornelius, the ultimate authority figure, runs a planetwide organization called E.M.P.I.R.E. that enforces world peace with a mighty fist. Casanova remains the persist rebel, but transdimensional hijinx and his father's nemesis, a villain named Newman Xeno, pull him into an adventure involving alternate versions of himself and deranged sci-fi plans.

Why It Works: Casanova is a textbook of male wish fulfillment, punching alien creatures through the »

Two and a Half Men Recap: "818-jklpuzo"

22 September 2009 8:52 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Last night Two and a Half Men had its seventh season premiere, and some how Charlie Sheen and Emmy-award winning Jon Cryer (sorry Nph, we had to throw that in) continue to not disappoint.

The show, in its typical fashion, was all about both Charlie's bowel movements and his relationship at the same time.  Of course, when Charlie has relationship issues that means the amazing Jane Lynch takes a break from stealing scenes in Glee to guest star as Charlie's amazing therapist, Dr. Freeman.

In addition to Jane Lynch reprising her role, fans were treated to a rather humorous, albeit pointless cameo by Eddie Van Halen, the return of the incredibly hot Emmanuelle Vaugier, and MadTV's Will Sasso.  Not bad.

Find out what all these guest stars did in our "818-jklpuzo" recap.  Now for some of the hilarious Two and a Half Men quotes from the episode.

Sook-Yin Lee marks her directorial debut!

11 September 2009 2:07 PM, PDT | Filmicafe | See recent Filmicafe news »

Sook-Yin Lee is often regarded as a bold actor and broadcaster. In 2001, for instance, she mooned TV cameras on one of her last days as a VJ at MuchMusic. And in the 2006 big-screen drama Shortbus, she performs non-simulated intercourse as the lead character, a sex-therapist.Which is why it's surprising that Lee is timid about the world premiere of Year of the Carnivore . she wrote and directed the feature . at the Toronto International Film Festival."I've been so scared!" the Vancouver native, host of CBC Radio's pop-culture show "Definitely Not the Opera," said in a recent interview."I love this movie, and you set it out into the world and you don't know if it'll get brutalized . or worse, ignored."So I've just been like: 'Oh my God, why do I make things? Black Dynamite Final Trailer

10 September 2009 6:42 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Scott Sanders’ blaxploitation homage Black Dynamite is one of those films I feel like I’ve heard about for the past year without hearing a concrete word on whether it’s good or not. Regardless, we’ve got the last trailer for the film before its release on October 16th this year.

The film stars Michael Jai White (famous for Spawn but more famous for getting himself tossed by the Joker in The Dark Knight), Arsenio Hall (!!!) and Nicole Sullivan of MadTV fame, amongst others.

Judging by this trailer from Yahoo, they’ve pulled off the aesthetic of these sorts of bygone films with precision. Check it out.

Andrea Wong Wants to Reinvigorate Lifetime. (Step One: Steal Project Runway)

3 September 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Andrea Wong brought us The Bachelor! Now she's trying to reinvigorate Lifetime with positivity and fun.

If Project Runway had a needlepoint challenge, the show might find itself with an unlikely contestant. "About a year ago, I started needlepointing," confesses Andrea Wong, CEO of Lifetime Networks. She is perched on a chair in her Los Angeles office, wearing a black Yves Saint Laurent pantsuit. "It completely relaxes me." Well, usually. There was that time she was stitching a cushion for her boyfriend. "I was needlepointing while doing conference calls. It practically killed me."

Wong's coexisting affection for high fashion and homey crafts are the perfect metaphor for her plan to reinvigorate the dowdy, if successful, cable channel. Lifetime has been the top ad-backed female-focused network for years but, before Wong's 2007 arrival, was plagued with a reputation for lowbrow movies like My Stepson, My Lover. Its ratings were falling or flat for five straight years. »
