Tarantino is the latest film star to be showing up on the small screen in Japan. Embarrassing? Or, rather, more embarrassing than Brad Pitt?
In the not-too distant past it was quite possible for Hollywood stars to pocket what we can only imagine are swagbags of cash for starring in some pretty goofy Japanese advertisements, safe in the knowledge that no one they knew well would ever get to see them. Unfortunately (for them, at least) YouTube has changed all that.
That said, Quentin Tarantino's latest foray into acting is unlikely to prove tremendously embarrassing - if only because it shows the director of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction as a good sport. Tarantino is the latest celeb to appear in a long-running series of ads for Japanese mobile phone manufacturer SoftBank, starring the White family, whose members include Me (played by popular singer/actress Aya Ueto), Dad (a »

Laurence Fishburne has no regrets about turning down a role in Pulp Fiction, because he could never have played ruthless hitman Jules Winnfield as well as his pal Samuel L. Jackson.
Director Quentin Tarantino approached Fishburne to star alongside John Travolta in his 1994 crime thriller - but the Apocalypse Now star declined the part.
The movie went on to be a huge hit, reigniting Travolta's career and earning Jackson an Oscar nomination.
But Fishburne isn't jealous, insisting the role was made for his close friend.
He says, "I decided not to do it, because I couldn't respond to the part. As a whole piece, it didn't speak to me. It didn't feel like something I needed to do. It's the part that Sam Jackson wound up doing brilliantly.
"I'm glad I didn't do it, because Sam is a bada**.'" »

John Travolta is having daily therapy sessions to cope with his son's death. The 'Pulp Fiction' star - whose eldest child Jett, 16, died after suffering a seizure during a holiday to the Bahamas in January - is taking religious counselling with his family to help them work through the tragedy. John - who along with wife Kelly Preston is a follower of sci-fi cult Scientology - said: "We've been working very hard every day as a family to heal. "We have our own way of doing it, and it has been helping." Kelly added: "The outpouring of love from, really, worldwide has been extraordinary. It's been our friends, our family, our church. Every seven years, 30 of the world’s most deadly assassins take over a random city and compete for a ten million dollar prize. The rules are simple. The contestants have twenty-four hours to be the sole survivor, if not a tracking device implanted in their abdomen will detonate. Let the game begin.
If you’re a fan of action blockbusters like Transporter or Crank than The Tournament should excite you. The film is ninety minutes of explosions, slow-motion, 300-style fight sequences, and shoot-em-up action. But what really sets The Tournament apart from most films in this genre is the gratuitous gore, hence the appeal to fright fans. There are plenty of exploding heads/dismemberments and because the tournament takes place in a random city, there is no shortage of civilian casualties. The body count is high and unlike cartoonish films like Transformers, the mayhem is bloody and visceral.
But if you’re like me, »

Chicago – When a New York subway dispatcher finds himself locked in a tense battle of the wits with a deranged criminal onboard Pelham 123, he’s offered this bit of advice from a seasoned hostage negotiator: don’t enter his world. The same warning could be issued to viewers intent on entering the world of Tony Scott. It is a cinematic landscape that is alternately marred and enhanced by Add.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.
The Taking of Pelham 123 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, 2009.

Oscar winning writer/director Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe) may be Tweeting about his experiences in jail.
Avary started his one year of incarceration on October 25 after pleading guilty to felony manslaughter. The charges stemmed from a January 2008 DUI crash that resulted in the death of a passenger. He’s reportedly serving time through the work furlough program, which allows him to leave the jail, go to work, and return to his cell by a night curfew.
Four days later came a post on his Twitter account possibly critiquing the architecture of his Ventura County Jail. “The building is an imposing example of the Brutalist architectural movement. The windows are designed so as to not let too much light in.”
This is followed up the next day by this Tweet, “The channels on the Rec Room television cannot be changed, and it’s inexplicably always tuned to Fox.” Obligatory »

I'm not sure where someone even found the inspiration for something like this, never mind the patience to gather and assemble the necessary elements, but the result is pretty fascinating. In the below clip (which seems to have originated with this Youtube user), tiny pieces of the crime classic Pulp Fiction are blended and looped, with the audio of tasty beverage slurping, ball-gag mumbles, submachinegun fire and Gimp drumming all combining in an unexpected but impressive way. You'll dig it the most. »

Some super-fan made a crazy audio/video remix of scenes and sounds from Pulp Fiction that you have to check out. It's so good that it could be confused with an underground techno mash-up. The remix uses multiple split-screens with the sounds from the scenes remixed to a beat, like Jules's delicious shake, Butch's getaway, Jimmie Dimmick slapping soap into Jules's hand, Zed slapping the Gimp's head and shushing his victims, and Marsellus Wallace grunting behind a ballgag.
The detail on this is impressive, especially the remixing of the different scenes. The person's YouTube channel is otherwise made up of music performances, so I'm very curious if there's a collaborator involved or what. There's a lot of Pulp Fiction mashups on YouTube that pale in comparison, although this one is pretty cool. The music mashup culture is a fascinating one; it seems more underground than the video mashups, probably because »

Chicago – From producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men,” “Superman Returns”), “Trick ‘r Treat” is a fantastic horror anthology film that has inexplicably been rolling around the Warner Bros. offices for years, having initially been scheduled for release back in 2007. Finally getting a Halloween-tied Blu-Ray release, this is one of the best straight-to-dvd horror flicks in years, a consistently clever and enjoyable genre entry that will have horror fans screaming in glee this holiday season.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
I will never understand why junk like “The Stepfather” and “Saw VI” get national, heavily-marketed releases but something like “Trick ‘r Treat,” which has won festival awards and been buzzed about since it first started screening, won’t be playing on a screen near you this Halloween. This is one messed-up genre. I think if WB had found a way to market this film, especially with the star power of Anna Paquin coming off “True Blood, »

As twilight descends on Quentin Tarantino’s contribution to nineties American cinema, fewer filmmakers are writing scripts with a copy of Pulp Fiction’s in hand for reference. A new filmmaker might reason that Tarantino is so successfully parodying himself these days that they’d be making a copy of a copy and it’s hardly worth it. But for those still in thrall to the magpie’s ouveur and determined to make knock off versions of the movies that electrified 90’s audiences, there’s still one man in Hollywood who’s willing to back them – er, Quentin Tarantino.
Hell Ride is such a movie – a low rent affair produced by Tarantino and the Weinsteins and featuring Dennis Hopper, the late David Carradine and Michael Madsen in parts so slight that you can imagine their participation was gained for a modest outlay of girls, grams and glug, probably at a »

With Halloween on the horizon, a lot of people might be planning a shindig of some sort to celebrate. Most will have costume parties, which is terrific, as they usually involve scantily clad females pretending to be something ordinary like a prison guard or dental hygienist, but really sexy. These parties will also most likely contain disturbing, horror-themed food-stuffs, and an increasingly gory display of body parts strewn across the premises like something out of a bad crime scene.
(I tell you, if I had money, I would invest in a Halloween store, as they seem to make mint and only have to work 3 months of the year).
There are also large groups of nerds out there (myself included) who enjoy subjecting their friends to horror movies they may have not yet seen, or seen with a group of people, which is the best way to experience most horror flicks. »

This is an ingenious update of the movie trailer mash-up craze – mashed movie posters created by English newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Dr Strangelove Actually made me chuckle seeing Peter Sellers tied up in that cutesy Richard Curtis bow. The joy is in the details -- Tinkerbell with a Pulp Fiction cigarette, the Alien head on E.T.’s moon. The unlikeliest combo is Kes (Ken Loach’s classic tearjerker about a working-class schoolboy and his bird) crossed with actioner Transporter 3. Hmmm...I’d love to see Sex and The City done Breakfast at Tiffany’s style…or how about »

John Travolta's family has been brought closer together by the tragic death of 16-year-old son Jett earlier this year.
The Hollywood actor was left devastated when his beloved boy died in January following a seizure but it has made him appreciate the importance of wife Kelly Preston and nine-year-old daughter Ella.
The 'Pulp Fiction' star's assistant and friend Ronnie Zupancic said: "They think about Jett every day, they never stop. They recognise the fragility of life, and they all hold each other a little tighter now.
"It doesn't wear off. Jett is still with them. It's like it was yesterday. He's got a heavy heart. There is a hole."
On Wednesday (21.10.09), Travolta's extortion case - in which two men were accused of trying to get £18 million from the star following the death of Jett - ended in a mistrial, leaving him "upset" as the family is keen to move on. »
