Now I love Eric Roberts, and consider him one of the most underrated actors going, but this film has some serious flaws.

First off, never cast the lead actor's wife as his love interest. While Eric's wife, Eliza Roberts, who plays his girlfriend, has a nice, natural quality to her acting, she comes off as just shrill in this movie.

Second, if you want a film to seem realistic and believable, don't cast Kelly Preston. She has the body of a Playboy centerfold, and the acting range of a turnip.

Third, if you're going for a moody, quirky film noir, hire the best cinematographer money can buy, and shoot it that way. This was shot like the ABC Move of the Week, and the film really suffers because of it. Same for the direction and editing. It's bland white bread when it should have been more adventurous.

And fourth, hire a director who has the balls to tell Eric Roberts not to chew up scenery like he shamelessly does in the final part of this film. Eric's a great actor, but he can and will go over the top, especially when he's working with sub-standard material, like this.

This film has a real interesting premise, and could have been a fun little film noir. Instead, you can just hear the suits who financed it demanding, "More sex!" "More shots of Kelly's boobs!"

If you want to see Eric in a quirky little film that has great atmosphere and great acting (and even a beautiful girl), along with top notch cast, script and production, try "La Cucaracha". "Love is a Gun" should stay in the cutout bin.
