It was a miserly start to the Holiday movie season as the high profile movie positioned to bring the most cheer, A Christmas Carol, stumbled a bit out of the gate. Overall weekend business was off 14 percent from the same timeframe last year, when Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa landed, and was on the low end for early November.
Haunting approximately 6,500 screens at 3,683 sites, A Christmas Carol churned out an estimated $31 million, selling fewer tickets than Elf and The Santa Clause 2 and far fewer than star Jim Carrey's last Christmas movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. On the other hand, Carol's opening grossed more than The Polar Express, the previous performance-capture animated Christmas movie from director Robert Zemeckis that chugged strongly throughout the 2004 season despite its disappointing $23.3 million start, but that picture was muted by The Incredibles whereas Carol had no such direct competitor. According to distributor Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling, »

One of the things you really have to ask yourself at the outset is, "Why do people keep remaking Charles Dickens' story?" The easy answer is that we need a decent helping of holiday fare at the theaters, but there are other things we could do, and even redo. It may still be a ways off, but we're quickly gaining on the 200th Anniversary of this story... surely there are other tales we could explore. While spitting out a movie just to cash in is never a motive that should be overlooked, the people behind the thirty-odd versions of this particular story don't seem as a general rule to be those sorts of people. On the other hand, Robert Zemeckis is one of the first names that might pop into my mind when working out a list of those capable of churning out nonsense based largely on the idea »

Actress Robin Wright is still red-faced about her recent appearance at the Women in Hollywood Awards - because she was "shy" and "inert".
The Forrest Gump star was among the ladies honoured at the Elle magazine gala and audience members were shocked with her lacklustre acceptance speech - some put it down to her ongoing divorce battle with husband Sean Penn.
But Wright, who has already dropped Penn from her name, insists she's just not a very good public speaker.
She tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "I drove home and drank myself into a stupor out of shame.
"Big groups just ain't my bag... Everybody had a great story about why they're in the business, and their stories were all different and wonderful. I was like, 'Ok, I'm 43 f**king years old, and I'm not stepping up and being the best I can be.' I was shy and basically inert." »

Robert Zemeckis has been a relatively unsung innovator in the use of computer-generated and -enhanced imagery in films, in movies such as Death Becomes Her and Forrest Gump. Perhaps the problem is that his technological advances have been shackled to underwhelming films (i.e., Death Becomes Her). His film version of Chris van Allsburg's The Polar Express was a leap forward in the blending of motion-capture technology with computer animation. But while it gets trotted out on an annual basis, it's an unsatisfying film because the faces (particularly the eyes) of the characters look dead. The same was true of his Beowulf. Zemeckis has made strides to overcome that problem with Disney's A Christmas Carol, the hubristically titled new version of Charles Dickens' classic story. There are still too many characters whose faces (particularly the eyes) look as lifeless as animatrons from the... »

Update: Video footage from outside the event by GeekTown.co.uk below.
Tonight the lovely people at Sky Movies HD invited us along to the World Premiere of Disney’s A Christmas Carol. This was no ordinary premiere as it boasts the largest premiere for a 3D movie, Ever! Greeted by fake snow falling from the sky and a huge stage with period carol singers, and Andrea Bocelli giving a breathtaking performance, we knew we were in for a treat. Not that I’ve been to loads, but this was by far the biggest premiere I’ve ever seen in London’s Leicester Square with the premiere taking over both the Empire and the Odeon Mezzanine. That totals 3013 seats, which alone is a huge number to fill on an opening night.
Once we found our seats, I noticed that we were literally in front of Eamon Holmes and Demot Murnaghan »

The biggest DVD and Blu-ray release for this week is probably G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It pains me to know that this week some brave souls will give it another chance, while others will discover its sheer idiocy for the first time. If you're looking for something slightly better but still mediocre, you might try Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. Other smaller releases for the week include Dolph Lundgren's direct-to-dvd action flick Command Performance, the Spanish post-apocalyptic flick Before The Fall, and the G.I. Joe Resolute animated microseries. Also keep an eye out for a few noteworthy documentaries this week including Food Inc., The English Surgeon, and the John Hughes doc Don't You Forget About Me (in Canada only). Plus: James Bond and Rocky collections on Blu-ray, and the only partially redundant Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut! Will you be picking anything up this week? »

After weeks of rather lackluster releases ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" being a prominent exception), we finally have a Tuesday jam-packed with first-run titles and notable catalog additions. From the on-screen debut of an elite military team to John Cusack's ode to love, we're covering them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, November 3.
For any child of the '80s, the thought of "G.I. Joe" receiving the theatrical treatment was an intriguing proposition, and one fraught with worry. And for die-hard fans of writer Larry Hama's epic "G.I. Joe" comic book run, it was especially scary. In stark contrast to the campy animated series, Hama infused his 155-issue run with deeply developed character arcs, ever-twisting conspiracies and, to his credit, pulled no punches when it came to violence and death. Which "G.I. Joe" would the film rely on for its story and tone? While producers insisted they'd »

Before we get into this week's releases I thought I would alert you to an upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection titles at Barnes and Nobles beginning on November 10 and running for two weeks. The full details, and a $5 off coupon, can be found in the DVD Talk forums.
Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.
As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »
