Jim Van Bebber is one of the most uncompromising independent filmmakers working out there today. I'm a fan of both "Deadbeat at Dawn" and his shocking "The Manson Family". This guys an unique talent if a really grungy one. This documentary short from him about a guy whose stoned basically twenty-four hours a day is far from his best work, but its reasonably amusing, especially if (like the other reviewer said) you've been in one of these situations. The main character's seemingly brain dead musings and philosophies on why he smokes are pretty funny, as are his friends. However, all of them seem to be living successful lives, which makes Van Bebber's treatment of the material surprisingly even-handed. "Doper" is an entertaining and truly independent documentary short. (6/10)
