Film review: A Serious Man

19 November 2009 2:20 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Deftly balancing bright comedy and bitter darkness, the Coens have come up with another uncomfortable masterpiece about a fraternal duo

Joel and Ethan Coen have bookended the decade with a superb film at the very beginning, The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), and another two stormers at the end: their superlative adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men in 2007 – and now this sublimely funny, involving, utterly distinctive serio-comedy of mid-life crisis set in the American midwest in the 1960s, which happens to be where and when the Coen brothers themselves were brought up.

Crumb's latest collection, The Book of Genesis Illustrated, is a literal rendering of that Old Testament classic—including the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Sodom and Gomorrah, and all the incest high jinks you half-remember from Bible class. In true Crumb form, there are plenty of creepily sexy moments, like Onan diddling his brother's wife, Lot getting drunk-raped by his own daughters, and »

Modern Gentlemen #2 (Comic Review)

15 July 2009 7:34 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Modern Gentlemen #2’s pages are overflowing with erections, dead porn stars, spiteful fish, horny psychopaths, gore, breasts, bullies, talking turds, and yes-- Kurt Russell. Modern Gentlemen #2 is like a bad dream during a bad acid trip; but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Modern Gentlemen is a Pleasant Productions comic book out of Melbourne, Australia that is extraordinarily depraved but easily enjoyable for anyone with an offbeat sense of humor. It’s basically a compilation of short comics from various writers and artists. The longest, titled: Donkey Punch Disco In… Fuckheads In Space runs about 11 pages long.

The Night Robert Crumb Visited Me  In A Dream And Taught Me Important Lessons About Life pretty much sums up the warped ideologies taking place in Modern Gentlemen. In it, Robert Crumb lends his counsel to a perplexed young man who seems to be having doubts about the comic business. Crumb goes »
