Ninja Assassins Movie Review

1 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Ninja Assassins Gives birth to a new action star I grew up watching “Chop-Socky Flicks” which is all Ninja Assassins is with a bit more spit and polish. The CGI computer graphics amplify the gore and add matrix-esque quality to the actors martial arts skills. This movie and essentially all the Kung-Fu/Karate genre movies owe their existence to four Bruce Lee Films. Bruce is often imitated but never duplicated. The common flaw is the heroes just do not have the charisma nor the acting chops of Bruce Lee.

With a barrage of fast paced multiple fight scenes, action is certainly the foundation but they must be anchored by star power to succeed. Few come to mind: Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and some of Chuck Norris’ films accomplish this but Bruce is like james Dean or Elvis - the total package. What’s happening with the new Crow movie?

24 November 2009 10:57 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Did you know Hollywood is planning a new movie in The Crow series? They are. The new Crow movie in development is set to be written and directed by Stephen Norrington, whose 2003 comic book adaptation League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen was so bad that neither he nor actor Sean Connery has made another movie since. The film is being produced by Ryan Kavanaugh, who recently spoke with io9 and informed them that the project still has not been officially greenlit and that it will be a re-launch instead of a remake. "We're just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody." Talking about the upcoming film, Norrington told Variety his spin would be drastically different from the first, most famous and best Crow film starring Brandon Lee. »

Casting For ‘The Crow’ Reboot Has Begun

24 November 2009 9:54 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ever since it was announced that Blade director, Stephen Norrington, was going to be writing and directing a reboot of The Crow franchise, there’s been speculation as to what shape his take on the classic comic and film character would be. At the time Norrington’s attachment was announced, it was revealed that the new version wouldn’t be, “gloriously gothic or stylized,” and this upset quite a few people who consider stylized goth to be the essence of The Crow story.

Norrington’s version is said to be, “realistic, hard-edged and mysterious,” which sounds like they’re trying to emulate the reboot success of Batman Begins with more brutality. That’s what I hope, anyway, although maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

It was recently announced that the latest draft of Norrington’s Crow has been well received by studio Relativity Media, so much so »

'The Crow' Relaunch Takes Flight

24 November 2009 7:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Director Stephen Norrington’s script for the proposed reboot of “The Crow” is finished even though the film has yet to get the official greenlight.

“The script is great,” said “Crow” producer Ryan Kavanaugh during an interview with i09. ”We're very excited about it. ‘The Crow’ is definitely going to happen, we're just getting all the pieces together right now. It's not officially greenlit, but it's going to happen... I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure.”

Created in 1989 by James O'Barr, “The Crow” has been adapted into a TV series and four feature films — most notably with the first "Crow" film starring the late Brandon Lee in 1994. According to Kavanaugh, the new film will be a literal relaunch of the franchise, which includes a complete reinterpretation of The Crow’s classic look.

“I think it's something cool, we're approaching it differently,” stated Kavanaugh. »

‘The Crow’ reboot will look like ‘Batman Begins’ according to producer

24 November 2009 4:38 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

While the upcoming reboot for The Crow has not received the almighty greenlight, that hasn’t stopped producer Ryan Kavanaugh from being optimisc about the project.

The Crow is definitely going to happen, we’re just getting all the pieces together right now,” he said. “It’s not officially greenlit, but it’s going to happen. I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure.”

Putting fans of the original Crow at ease, Kavanaugh stated that the film will not be a direct remake of the original classic starring the late Brandon Lee. Instead, it’s looked upon to be a relaunch of the franchise. Also, he’s already talking with actors.

“We’re approaching it differently,” he said. “It’s really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type.”

The new Crow character will be “much more present day” and “he’ll have makeup, »

The Crow Revamp - Casting Underway

24 November 2009 2:56 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

We've reported before on the upcoming revamp (rather than remake) of 1994's actioner The Crow (which starred a deceased Brandon Lee) about an undead rock-musician on a quest to avenge his own murder and can now confirm that the carillon will carry on with Stephen Norrington set to direct the revamp. Furthermore his producer Ryan Kavanaugh has confirmed in an interview with i09 that casting is now underway.

Of course he rather unexcitingly failed to mention any names they may be looking at, and also confirmed what was already widely known, namely that the film has not yet been greenlit, but we don't think that should stop us from speculating on who we'd like to see in the role...

After much consideration the Screenrush office can announce that it is officially erring towards Zac Efron - an actor we'd love to see all gothed up, if he won't do it »

The Crow Remake Continues Pushing Ahead

23 November 2009 11:44 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

It’s been nearly a year since the remake to The Crow was announced, and despite the length of time there seems to have been very little progress until this point. The original, directed by Alex Proyas, launched Brandon Lee into super-stardom at the same time as the young actor tragically died during filming and since Lee’s untimely departure, studios have struggled to fill the leather boots for the sequels.

That is, of course, until now. Speaking to io9, producer Ryan Kavanaugh gave an update on the long awaited remake, where it stands at this point and the big questions of course, casting:

I heard The Crow script received great reviews, where is it at now?

The script is great. We’re very excited about it. The Crow is definitely going to happen, we’re just getting all the pieces together right now. It’s not officially greenlit, but it’s going to happen… »

'The Crow' Reboot Begins Casting

23 November 2009 11:08 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Since it was announced that Relativity Media is developing "The Crow", no one has been reported being in talks to play the major character, Eric Draven. In a recent interview with io9, producer Ryan Kavanaugh has talked about the progress of the project, including his "good ideas" for the casting.

Asked if he has begun selecting actors for the movie, Kavanaugh stated, "We're looking. We're in discussions." Moreover, he suggested that the chosen actor could be either someone famous or a new star, saying "It will be an actor you've heard of, yes. We're not ruling anything out. We're looking at both, with the very well known and the 'very talented but they may not be quite there yet."

Gushing about the new "The Crow" film, Kavanaugh said, "I think it's something cool, we're approaching it differently. It's really a whole relaunch of the franchise, much more of a dark superhero type. »

Crow Relaunch Still In Flight

23 November 2009 7:43 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

I wonder what kind of career Brandon Lee would have if he hadn't died while filming The Crow. Would he still be doing martial arts flicks or would he have moved on to doing dramas? I know in all of his interviews he always said that acting came before fighting. It sucks that we'll never get to find out. And studios have been unsuccessful in trying to fill in his absence when it came to more crow movies. So here's Round 4, or 17, or whatever round they're on now for Crow films. i09 spoke with producer Ryan Kavanaugh about the relaunch and its progress: I heard The Crow script received great reviews, where is it at now? The script is great. We're very excited about it. The Crow is definitely going to happen, we're just getting all the pieces together right now. 'The Crow' Reboot Will Be Something Completely Different

23 November 2009 7:03 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

I love The Crow, and it will always have a special place in my heart, but I just can't hide the fact that I'm excited as all hell for a franchise reboot. It took 15 years, but Alex Proyas' adaptation of James O'Barr's comic is straight up dated. This afternoon io9 caught up with Ryan Kavanaugh, the man producing the remake being penned by Stephen Norrington. In the original comic, a man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. "It's not a remake it's literally a relaunch of the franchise," Producer Ryan Kavanaugh reveals to io9 during an interview for his forthcoming film Brothers. He adds that the make-up will also be very different and uses Batman as a comparison...More »

The Crow Remake is Casting, But Who Should Play Draven?

23 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

This is kind of like asking who should play the Joker if Chris Nolan decides to bring him back. We already know that Lxg director Stephen Norrington is rebooting Alex Proyas' The Crow, but hasn't cast anyone. Our friends at io9 talked with producer Ryan Kavanaugh who gave them some updates on the project. First he reiterates, "it's not a remake it's literally a relaunch of the franchise." Okay, but is it close to starting? "The Crow is definitely going to happen, we're just getting all the pieces together right now. It's not officially greenlit, but it's going to happen... I think in a couple months we could have the package together for sure." Kavanaugh obviously wouldn't say who they're looking at to play Eric Draven, the guitarist who is brought back from the dead to avenge his and his fiancée's murder. "We're looking. Who Will Be The Crow?

23 November 2009 4:20 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Oh, The Crow! I loved you so! I had the poster, the comic book by James O'Barr, the T-shirt, and the unrequited crush on Brandon Lee, whose tragic death only fanned the flames of my teenage desire. I even went to see the sequel, The Crow: City of Angels, which featured the spectacularly bad line, "F*ck you, bird d*ck!" uttered by none other than Iggy Pop. (I did, however, forget to light a candle for its 15th anniversary earlier this fall. Sniff.)

As previously reported, there is a relaunch being written by Stephen Norrington, who will also direct, that might not even include Eric Draven, the main character (sacre bleu!). The last time that Norrington took a crack at directing a beloved comic book was the 2003 stinker The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but as io9.com reported, so far the script is getting good reviews. Casting For The Crow Remake Underway

23 November 2009 2:50 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Casting is underway for the next theatrical iteration of The Crow, and the actor chosen will face the still-daunting task of walking in the late Brandon Lee's Goth-approved footsteps. Last month, I reported on an update of the script written by Blade director Stephen Norrington, and today brings an update from producer Ryan Kavanaugh (Brothers, Nine). So, what guy will be chosen---re: a female Crow is not being considered---to reprise the role of an undead rock musician who wreaks havoc on mortal goons? Let us know what you think of Kavanaugh's comments and leave your own below. Kavanaugh tells io9 that while the revamp ("not a remake") hasn't gotten an official greenlight, he foresees all facets coming together in the next few months. A release date of 2011 is currently listed on IMDb. Are you casting right now and looking? We're looking. We're in discussions....I think it's something cool, »

Crow Reboot Casting & Makeup Talk

23 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Ryan Kavanaugh, the producer behind the upcoming Brothers , is currently overseeing the development of Stephen Norrington's franchise reboot of The Crow . He tells io9 that Norrington's script is now in the tweaking stage and that everyone should know it is not a direct remake of the Brandon Lee-starring film. "We're just relaunching it and making it with a much more present day character, someone more relatable to everybody." The makeup will very much be different from the Crow visage we've come to know (and which has become a year-to-year Halloween costume favorite). Also, as far as casting goes, "It will be an actor you've heard of, yes. We're not ruling anything out. We're looking at both, with the very well known and the 'very talented but they may not »

Thought I'd goof around with a little b-day series. In case it's yours! Could be shortlived. Or maybe it'll go on forever. You never know.

Hal Hartley , Paprika Steen and Charles Bronson

Today's Birthdays, November 3rd ...some of them at any rate. For those who are prone to celebrating the lives of the filmic and famous. And if you aren't, you're not having enough fun.

1921 Charles Bronson had a Death Wish, five of them actually, and he had them before "franchise" was a daily spoken word in movie discussions.1930 Lois Smith, sweet character actress, is now 79 years old. I once saw her in a train station. It's true. Weren't you shocked when she died on the first season of True Blood? I sure was.

1931 Monica Vitti, breathtaking Italian goddess

1953 Kate Capshaw aka Mrs. Spielberg. Did she sing or was she dubbed for that awesome "Anything Goes" opening number in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom »

'The Crow' Remake Starts Casting

2 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The following seems like a non-story, but things have been quiet around the planned reboot of The Crow lately, so I figured, why not remind people it’s actually happening?

According to The Geek Files over at Coventry Telegraph, executives at Relativity Media are excited about the script turned in by director Stephen Norrington, and the project has entered the casting stages. The Crow, for those unfamiliar with the property, revolves around a rock musician murdered with his girlfriend; he returns from the dead one year later, seeking revenge on those responsible.

Originally a graphic novel, Alex Proyas directed the 1994 movie version starring Brandon Lee as the titular character. Three movie sequels and a TV show followed, but by 2005’s The Crow: Wicked Prayer, the series was going direct-to-video.

When interviewed, Norrington hinted his version of The Crow would be realistic and almost documentary-like. This would be a significant contrast from the gothic, »

Luke Goss and those rumours linking him to The Crow reboot

2 November 2009 7:20 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

We recently heard that the proposed new version of The Crow is entering the casting stage after the script - by Stephen Norrington, who will also direct - was well received by studio chiefs at Relativity Media.

The Crow centres on a rock musician who is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs and returns from the dead a year later to exact revenge. (You can read more about the reboot here)

The character was previously seen in a 1994 film starring Brandon Lee; three sequels: The Crow: City of Angels in 1996, The Crow: Salvation in 2000, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer in 2005; and a TV series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven in 1998.

Rumours have linked Luke Goss to the lead role in the new film. Goss, a former member of boy band Bros, is well-versed in fantasy roles, having played vampire Nomak in Blade 2, the creature in »

Movies That Make Me Think of Halloween

Recycled Film Experience! I wrote some of this in advance -- years in advance in fact -- to free up time to enjoy this costume crazed holiday. I originally published this list in 2005, but I've tweaked it some. Plus, not all of you were around in 2005. Herewith, the top 12 movies that remind me of Halloween. It's a top ten list and it's not even Tuesday. I'm so generous.

12 The Batman franchise (1989-2008)

In 1997 I went out Halloween clubbing as the Uma version of Poison Ivy. Whenever you dress up as a movie character the year the movie comes out, you'll have competition. There was another Poison Ivy there but I buried her, I promise. I had the horns and all the details, see. It was the longest I ever spent getting ready for Halloween (which is saying something): glue guns, orange wigs, fake foliage, you name it. I don't try as hard anymore. »
