Trivia:
Although no specific year is specified at any point in the movie, the events in the movie were most likely intended to take place in the spring and summer of 1973 for the following concrete reasons: 1.) The eldest son Clinton, who was a Knicks fan, chose to attend the final game of the NBA Finals instead of his father's concert. He half-heartedly told his family afterward that the Knicks won, and the only years the Knicks won in the 70's were 1970 and 1973, but . . . 2.) "Soul Train", which the kids were seen dancing to towards the end of the film, made it's debut in 1971, eliminating the possibility that the child attended the 1970 NBA Finals.

Quotes:
Nate:
May I PLEASE be excused?
Carolyn Carmichael: No you will not. You're gonna sit there until you eat every black eyed pea on that plate!
[to the kids]
Carolyn Carmichael: And when I come home tonight, I want this kitchen clean.
Clinton: [the kids groan] See what you started, Nate? Shoot!
Nate: I HATE Black-eyed peas!
Carolyn Carmichael: Yeah, that's right! There's no reason why your father and I should have to run around here cleaning up after you shifty Negroes!
Clinton: Daddy don't make us clean up, don't you, Daddy?
Woody Carmichael: [Pouring lemonade in glass] I ain't in this. Leave me out of this.
Carolyn Carmichael: Your daddy may not mind but your momma do. I'm going with your father to a gig tonight and when I come home, this house BET-TER be clean. I'll be goddamed if I should have to do anything when I come home from work but sleep and relax!

I didn't hear much about this film when it was released but the general consensus seemed to be that it was one of Spike Lee's minor efforts. That said, I've just caught it on late night TV and I was impressed with what I saw. Crooklyn tells the story of a family of seven in early seventies Brooklyn from the perspective of the only daughter and, er, that's about it. But I was amazed at how much of this film 'rang true' considering the number of oddly filmed, surreal scenes (the glue-sniffing scene near the start was fantastic). I think it works because of the uniformly excellent performances and convincing art direction, but also because of the characters themselves. Everyone is different in subtle ways and they seem like a real community instead of the usual bunch of strangers who dress the same that passes for family in most movies. I do agree with some of the other negative comments: it's true that Crooklyn is about 15 minutes too long. Also, Lee is harder on Aunt Song than on the other characters and I could never quite work out why. The (simulated) cruelty to animals was also a shame from my perspective because it threw me out of the movie; I have trouble concentrating on the story when I see animals being mistreated. But these are minor quibbles as Crooklyn features many beautifully observed moments of family life and for non-Americans like me the wonderful vintage television ("Afro-Sheen!") is the icing on a very satisfying cake. Highly recommended.
