In this episode, Ross finds out that his ex-wife Carol is pregnant with his child. He's stunned to learn she wants to give the baby her and her lesbian lovers last name. Ross and Monica's parents come for dinner which makes Monica really stressed. Rachel decides to return her engagement ring to Barry, the man she left at the alter and learns that he didn't let their honeymoon go to waste. He spent it with her maid of honor Mindy.

Monica's new boyfriend, starts hanging out with everyone. But then he gets invited to places with her friends that she doesn't. So out of jealousy, she breaks up with him, and this makes everyone else feel very down. Chandler resumes his smoking habit. Phoebe encounters a problem with her bank account, they give her $1,000. She complains and gives it away, but then she opens a can of soda and sees a thumb. So the soda company gives her $7,000.

Season 1, Episode 5: The One with the East German Laundry Detergent

Eager to spend time with Rachel, Ross pretends his building's washroom is rat-infested so he can join her at the laundromat, as Chandler points out a 'date' and the first time she'll see his underwear, so no dirty, and his cute softener has to go for a German macho brand. The spoiled 'laundry virgin' feels it's a real step to independence if she manages this domestic job, but despite Ross's good advice leaves in a red sock; meanwhile they have to stand up as no-nonsense-New Yorkers against a rude, aggressive woman who invents rules to pretend it's not Rachel turn... When Joey realizes he regrets having dumped foxy Angela and learns she now dates a certain Bob, he proposes a double-date, then needs a girl stat: Monica, under false pretenses, but when she sees surprisingly hunky Bob and realizes he's not Angela's brother... Chandler drinks as much espresso as he sweats while desperately trying to break up with ever-neurotic Janice, while Phoebe needs less then a sentence to part with a hug- twice...

Season 1, Episode 7: The One with the Blackout

When a power-cut blacks out most of New York City, Chandler finds himself trapped inside an ATM vestibule, to his delight with Victoria Sears model Jill Goodacre, but stresses how to talk to her. She lets him use her cell-phone, next gum which he instantly regrets refusing, then accepts, spits it out, chokes when realizing he put back in someone else's... The others kill time in Monica's apartment by menorah-light, e.g. telling the weirdest places where they ever did it. Joey warns Ross he waited too long moving onto Rachel, being already too far into the 'friends zone', but Ross still tries while stargazing on the balcony; Joey keeps the other girls inside by pretending Ross prepares a birthday surprise party for Monica, but a wondering cat scratches Ross. Rachel and Phoebe go ask neighbors whose cat it is, see trough weirdo Mr. Heckles's lies it's his, bump into the hunky cat-owner, Paolo, who only speaks Italian and Rach brings him along by the arm, he needs no words to outclass Ross's courting by light-years...

Chandler is shocked to learn that people he works with think that he is gay. He asks his friends why, and they tell him that they also thought that he was gay when they first met him. Monica's Grandmother dies, and Ross falls down the open grave, and gets high on pain killers.

Season 1, Episode 9: The One Where Underdog Gets Away

With their parents away Monica and Ross decide to have Thanks giving dinner alone together at Monica's. However, one by one the other friends join them. Rachel says that she can't afford to buy a ticket for Vail to be with her family, Joey confesses that his fairly thinks that he has V.D. because he appeared in an ad campaign, Chandler recalls his story of how he doesn't eat thanks giving food because of bad memories, and Pheobe, who brings her Grandmother, confesses that she observes Thanks-giving in December because her Grandma's boyfriend is Lunar. As the Macy's parade passes by the Underdog balloon gets loose. The friends rush onto the terrace for a better view and get locked out, so the dinner burns. Chandler is happy because everyone eats grilled cheese sandwiches.

Ross is tired of living alone but doesn't want a roommate at his age either, so he adopts the capucin monkey Marcel, but soon finds the mindful 'pet' -cute in everybody's eyes, except cleaning freak Monica- returns little of his love, least of all to him. With Paolo about to return to Rome, it looks like New Year's Eve will see the friends desperate for someone to kiss at midnight, so Chandler launches a pact not to ask anyone else. Yet during the old year Rachel learns Paolo can be back early, Monica asks her ex Fun Bobby, Chandler even his hellish ex Janice, Joey single ma Sandy he met shopping, so Ross fears to be the only single left after Phoebe hooks up with scientist David, whom she met by barking at him and his mate Max for talking trough her endless 'songs' about her ma's suicide. Before midnight, things look worse again for everyone...

Season 1, Episode 11: The One with Mrs. Bing

Chandler's popular, best-selling ma, Nora Tyler Bing announces on Jay Lennon's show her book-tour's next stop is New York, a chance to see son-dear- and embarrass him again on national TV in advance. She takes the friends to a restaurant and encourages fan Rachel to try writing similarly cheap-steamy 'romantic formula' novels. She also observes Ross' frustration about Rachel, assures him Paolo is not a hero that stays in the story to the end, unlike him, and somehow they kiss- just then observed by Joey, who feels obliged to defend his ma Gloria's sex-appeal as equal, if you imagine her before sevenfold maternity, and shames Ross into confessing to Chandler, who is irate and reads each in turn the riot act... Meanwhile Phoebe instigated Monica to whistle to a hot hunk they saw walking on the street, which causes him to be hit by an ambulance and get into a coma. They fantasize about him being the perfect boy-friend, although they even ignore his name, and rival to care and keep him company, hoping he'll wake up like a fairy tale-prince...

For once on Valentine's day, only the boys have got dates. An egg opening line Joey and Chandler recommend works on ladylike Kristen to their surprise: Ross has his first dinner date since breaking up with Carol, but she's in the same sushi-bar, and gets left by her lesbian partner Susan, so he makes everyone shift seats to let her sit with them; alas their conversation gets a bit too exclusive... Joey insisted Chandler came along to a restaurant because his foxy date Lorraine demanded a double-date for her unknown friend, who turns out to be- Janice, who does nothing but blame her ex! When the lovers leave early, leaving only Joey's credit card, they order the best champagne, but two bottles contain so much alcohol they wake up... Meanwhile the jealous girls take Phoebe's advice to perform a cleansing ritual: burning in a weird concoction keepsakes of boys they want to forget, but Paolo's grappa contains so much alcohol the ebullient effect requires calling three hunky firemen, who aren't surprised in the least, but...

Chandler's boss orders him to tell foxy junior co-worker Nina she's fired in company lay-offs, but he can't, dates her instead and tells the boss she's in therapy, unable to handle or even remember her sacking; he even promises her a rise, but... A birth video makes Carol decide 'not to go trough'; Ross faints, finally realizing parenthood is forever... Chandler and Joey find in a bar Phoebe's twin-sister, utterly inept waitress Ursula, Joey asks Phoebe's blessing to date her sister, reluctantly given, yet afterward she's clearly very jealous...
