Some people are better off not getting married. This seems to be the underlying theme of this surprisingly amusing 1992 Mexican comedy directed by Carlos Carrera. The film is based on a novel by Sergio Pitol and was adapted by Mr. Carrera and Ignacio Ortiz. The result is a black comedy about two mismatched individuals that marry only to discover they got more than what both bargained for.
Jacqueline and Nicolas are young when we meet them. They appear to be in love. Their marriage turns from the start into a living nightmare. Nicolas is a womanizer who gets involved in real estate, neglecting his wife. Jacqueline, on the other hand, is ill equipped for household work; she despises cooking and other things that make Nicolas resent the fact he has married expecting a lot from her. The frustrated Jacqueline takes lovers hoping they will help her get rid of Nicolas. This goes on for about forty years when an ironic twist comes about.
Socorro Bonilla and Alonso Echanove are fine as these doomed lovers. Both show they can act and make the viewer take notice on what they bring to this black comedy. Damian Bichir, a versatile Mexican actor, is featured in the film. Xavier Perez Grobet, the cinematographer, did a marvelous job in the film. Enrique Quezadas Luna's music score plays well in the context and enhances the film.
