Not half as bad as some say..., 28 August 2007
5/10
Author: littlerikita from United Kingdom

Reading the other reviews of 'yuck', 'awful' etc. I felt compelled to write my own opinion of this film, and that is that this is definitely not one for the masses.

Your average cinema goer would no doubt find this bland and boring but for those of you who like to watch movies from time to time to appreciate things like a mass of talents coming together, beautiful cinematography and that little novelty of feeling as if watching more a theatrical piece than a 'movie', then this is wonderful.

Sometimes during this film i really did think that Sam Shepard should have written it for the stage, but of course then the piece would loose that wonderful quality of letting the viewer truly feel the emptiness of the characters through wonderful shots of vast desert, rolling tumble weeds and long, silent exchanges- which i personally, happened to love.

River Phoenix shows us a glimpse of what he really had to offer (very sadly, he is not given enough screen time). Harris turns in a wonderful performance as a father lost. Bates, to me, is no more dramatic than his character calls for and Mulroney also gives a strong performance.

This film definitely deserves more credit than it has widely been given.
