Birthday Suits, Well Directed

30 November 2009 6:05 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Lights. Cameras. Birthday Action (for this, the 30th of November). Only one month left to go and it's 2010. How crazy is that?

Ridley, Terrence (in the 70s) and Marc

1835 Mark Twain's books have been adapted into movies ever since the movies began. Most notably The Prince and the Pauper and any tale of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer

1920 Virginia Mayo 40s and 50s star, frequent Danny Kaye foil

1926 Richard Crenna, character actor

1927 Robert Guillaume, "Benson"

1929 Dick Clark, seemingly immortal creature who may finally be destroyed by the rise of his spiritual offspring Ryan Seacrest. It's all very Cronos vs. Zeus, only without the thunderbolts

1937 Ridley Scott, manly director whose movies are usually way better when they're shot through with a strong female presence. Consider the three classics: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Alien. The rest of the filmography surely has its moments but that's the trinity right there.

Puppets and Precursors

21 November 2009 6:30 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Given that precursor season is nearly upon us and I've always believed in full disclosure you should know that I recently joined the Bfca. Yes, the same group I have taken to task in the past for their insistence on equating "best" with "Oscar predictions". I've never understood that as an operating agenda but then... it's hardly endemic to them. In fact, each year I have to underline the difference between predictions and preferences several times over when people start saying things like "you think that's better than that?" while holding their nose. So many people think it means the same thing but it never does. When the two crossover it's an accident... a happy accident. Best is your own perceived meritocracy. Prediction is what you suppose a random group of other people might collectively prefer. I promise to vote by way of Best.

Tim Burton Exhibit Opens at MoMa

19 November 2009 10:41 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Tim Burton is lauded as being one of the most creative forces in Hollywood. His films have a distinct style that sets them apart, and characterizes Burton as a stand out director. Now, his work is being moved from the big screen onto the walls of the Museum of Modern Art.

In an exhibit opening Sunday and running through April, MoMa will have on display film memorabilia, movie posters, and drawings by Burton– some going as far back as his childhood. The exhibit will also include a film series showing Burton’s feature and short films, along with movies that influenced him.

This is the largest exhibit MoMa has ever put on that displays a retrospective view of the works of a filmmaker. At a press conference for the exhibit, Burton thanked “everybody that raided my closets” to find the material for the exhibit, and described the process of collecting work, »

Hi-Res Banner For Alice In Wonderland

19 November 2009 5:12 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Following the three new posters we’ve had recently (here and here) for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Disney have release the full image in the form of a high resolution banner! The image is a combination of the three aforementioned posters, and shows Wonderland in all it’s -er- wonderful glory!

Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice) attempts to work his gothic magic over one of the best loved stories of all time… Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There’, which first told the story of a young girl, who after following a rabbit down a hole, is transported to a strange world. Whilst the disney version of the tale relied on sweetness and light to delight the audience, Burton fans can be sure to look out for the same cartoon traits as earlier masterpiece ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’.

Think about the career of Tim Burton for a little while, and it makes a lot of sense for his work to receive a special exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. From "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "Batman" to "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Burton's projects have always had a certain flair — and it's that unique element of his work that's receiving the spotlight in this new exhibit.

You can get an early peek at some highlights from the Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA (including some great, behind-the-scenes art from "Batman") by clicking on the photo below:

Tim Burton brings us 30 seconds of awesome

17 November 2009 2:43 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Any New York-based Tim Burton fan should rush over to 53rd Street sometime between Nov. 22 and April 26, 2010. Why? The Museum of Modern Art will be running a retrospective exhibition on the imaginative director. And, if you ask me, an exhibit on the man behind Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, would include too much glorious quirk and animated derangement to ignore! Moma hardly needs to advertise such a cool exhibit—I was there before you could even say Mars Attacks!—but they've released this fun 30-second animated spot from the director anyway. So take »

17 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: Tim Burton definitely has his own aesthetic: part goth, part whimsy, part just plain Burton. Throughout his career, he has established himself as the go-to guy for the strangely charming and bizarre.

Now, the man behind such classics as "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," "Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is being honored with a retrospective exhibit of the artwork connected to some of his most beloved films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York this winter. A third character banner has been released for Tim Burton’s take on Alice in Wonderland. 'Fantastic Mr. Fox': A toast to stop-motion animation

15 November 2009 2:45 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I adored Fantastic Mr. Fox, which opened this weekend in Los Angeles and New York, and expands nationwide on Thanksgiving. We could discuss how working in a new medium has rejuvenated director Wes Anderson's creative juices, or how all of the voice performance were delivered in the same slightly ironic, yet still heartfelt tone, or how composer Alexandre Desplat wrote one of the most delectable scores in quite some time (as part of a soundtrack that already makes exemplary use of the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, and Jarvis Cocker). But really, above all else, it's the film's stop-motion »

-- Let the speculation begin. "Howling Mad" Murdock actor Dwight Schultz will be showing up for a cameo in Joe Carnahan's "The A-Team," according to a fansite. Hopefully, this means we'll be seeing other cameos from the rest of the team. Who doesn't want to see Mr. T give this young guns A-Team a vote of confidence with a tiny cameo role. Hell, he can leave his gold chains at home if it makes him happy. Schultz is great, but the fans want what they want: bring back T. (The Official Dwight Schultz Fansite, via Cinematical)

-- "Mad Men" producer Matthew Weiner is turning his attention to film now that the latest season is finished. He's now getting set to helm "You Are Here," a romantic comedy that he wrote. We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love).  In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write.  Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).

After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man. »

Henry Selick Exclusive Video Interview. Talks Future Projects, Coraline Unfixed, Why He Left Laika Studios, More

1 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A few days ago I sat down with director Henry Selick (”Coraline”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, “James and the Giant Peach”) for a very extensive interview.  While I spoke to him earlier this year before “Coraline” got released, with Focus Features trying to get “Coraline” nominated for Best Animated Feature (it absolutely deserves a nomination!) Selick has been talking to journalists and I was lucky enough to land a spot.  While we touched on “Coraline”, most of the interview covered other subjects.  Since most of you might not have the time to watch the entire interview, here are some highlights.  But if you’re a fan of Henry Selick, you definitely want to watch the interview after the jump as it was great.

Says his next project might be another collaboration with Gaiman. If it’s not the next one, it’s the project after the next one.  Says there »

We Want to Know: What Are You Watching on Halloween?

31 October 2009 1:19 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The Halloween holiday is many things to many people. For some, it is the opportunity to have fun making costumes for their kids and take the little ones out for a sugar-rush inducing night around the neighborhood. I will never forget my own mom's excitement when she got to make me a Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man costume from scratch when I was in the fourth grade. For others, Halloween is about dressing up as something sexy, alluring or creative and hitting up the hottest spots in town to see how many sexy cats and naughty nurses show up to get drunk. And for many, no matter where you fall, Halloween is a day to watch scary movies. That's where we come in. We've been laying down suggestions in our 31 Days of Horror feature all month long, concluding this morning with Robert Fure's final entry, Splinter. And while we've compiled an awesome list, I »

Movies That Make Me Think of Halloween

30 October 2009 9:51 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Recycled Film Experience! I wrote some of this in advance -- years in advance in fact -- to free up time to enjoy this costume crazed holiday. I originally published this list in 2005, but I've tweaked it some. Plus, not all of you were around in 2005. Herewith, the top 12 movies that remind me of Halloween. It's a top ten list and it's not even Tuesday. I'm so generous.

12 The Batman franchise (1989-2008)

In 1997 I went out Halloween clubbing as the Uma version of Poison Ivy. Whenever you dress up as a movie character the year the movie comes out, you'll have competition. There was another Poison Ivy there but I buried her, I promise. I had the horns and all the details, see. It was the longest I ever spent getting ready for Halloween (which is saying something): glue guns, orange wigs, fake foliage, you name it. I don't try as hard anymore. »

A Halloween Chat With Henry Selick, Director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline

30 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

With one masterful movie in which imaginary, holiday-manufacturing villages collide, The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick single-handedly ignited the stop-motion renaissance. His most recent film, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 2002 children's book Coraline, was no less ghoulish a tale, centering on a little girl with neglectful parents who discovers a mirror world of button-eyed doppelgangers living through a secret passageway. Movieline spoke with Selick today about Jack Skellington's favorite day, the direction stop-motion is taking, and the grunt work of making an enduring animated classic. »

Halloween List-Making Invades The MTV Newsroom

30 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.

As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.

The other one that still gets me, »
