Q: I'm curious about Project Runway's Christopher Straub. The ring he wears suggests he has a husband / partner / significant other. What details might you know on this? Every time Heidi had him in tears, I found myself strongly torn between wanting to give him a hug and going all Cher on him. – LgH, Houston, TX, Usw, Earth
A: “I am married!” Straub tells the Flying Monkey. “Well, not legally, but Ronnie and I had a commitment ceremony two-and-a-half years ago. We've been together for over five years. He's a little scientist, and we really don't understand what each other does for a living.”
I asked what the two of them do for fun. “We like to travel, watch TV – I like reality shows and he »

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
Today we have a Sick Day Stash first. Last week, MTV's Rya Backer sang the praises of '90s classic "Mrs. Doubtfire" to the heavens. She so enjoyed the experience of spewing praise at one of her favorite movies that she volunteered to step up again this week and bare her love for "Wayne's World." That's all I've got to say. Take it away, Rya!
Hi, Again!
So last week, I ran my mouth about "Mrs. Doubtfire, »

The Hangover star Bradley Cooper is now set to replace Shia Labeouf in Neil Burger's (The Illusionist) upcoming thriller, Dark Fields. The film is an adaptation of the Alan Glynn book of the same name, and will feature a script by eclectic screenwriter, Leslie Dixon (The Thomas Crowne Affair, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hairspray). The film is among many projects Cooper has signed on for post-Hangover (which is strange, because I still know the guy best as Sydney Bristow's best friend on Alias). Cooper will play a struggling writer who takes a top-secret pharmaceutical drug that makes him smarter. He finds success, but also comes to learn there are consequences, such as the phenomenon "trip-switching" which makes him perceive time moving similar to stop-motion. The official book description follows: Imagine a drug that makes your brain function with perfect efficiency, tapping into your most fundamental resources of intelligence and drive, releasing »

Basically, the best movie in the history of the world is “Mrs. Doubtfire.” I mean, I like “good” movies, too (“This Is Spinal Tap,” “Being There,” “Annie Hall,” “Taxi Driver,” – what I’m trying to say is that I’m well-rounded and know enough about the art of filmmaking), but in the land of celluloid, only one feature film can be king. And that feature film clocks in at just over 120 minutes, most »

A few months ago, my co-worker Steven and I had an idea: let's go on dates. Not with each other, mind you. Rather, let's go on dates with bands we like. This idea would be less feasible if we worked at "Maury," but we work at MTV News, so our nutty notion proved to be a can-do.
Then we totally forgot about the idea, but sometime in August, we decided to pursue our dream and shoot an episode, and thus, I had a pizza party with Friendly Fires. The food and conversation were both delicious, and I do hope this video leaves you feeling satiated. Also, we don't talk about music at all in this episode, but here's what you need to know: Friendly Fires sound like the best possible dance party involving guys wearing Keds. Lead singer Ed Macfarlane has an incredibly elastic voice that can reach really high, »

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire. John Travolta in Hairspray. These are among some of Hollywood’s big name men to let their feminine sides shine through on screen by playing the role of women (granted, Hoffman and Williams were both men playing men playing women…)
The next star to don a dress for a film? Adam Sandler.
Sandler has signed on to star in Jack and Jill, and romantic comedy from Columbia Pictures. The actor will be doing double duty in the film, playing the roles of both Jack and Jill, as well as producing the film under his Happy Madison banner.
Filming on Jack and Jill will begin early next year, to be ready for release by Sony in 2011.

It's never been easy being a working mom and Hollywood has recognized it for years. From "Baby Boom" with Diane Keaton to Sally Field's mom in "Mrs. Doubtfire" to Julia Robert's "Erin Brokovich," movies have depicted the struggles of keeping a career and a family to both comedic and serious extremes. This weekend, Uma Thurman stars in an indie look at the subject matter as a blogger trying to survive a hipper than thou New York City in the new comedy "Motherhood." HitFix's Katie Hasty spoke to Thurman about shooting the comedy, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and... »

Some of the best comedies are about guys dressing up as girls. But for every "Some Like It Hot" and "Tootsie" there are a lot of dumb, unfunny drag movies like "Sorority Boys" and "Juwanna Mann." It's therefore easy to assume that any new cross-dressing comedy is going to not only be unfunny but potentially also offensively backwards in terms of gender jokes.
So what hope can I have for a "dude-in-drag romantic comedy" pitch that, according to Variety, just sold to Working Title for around $1 million after a heated bidding war? Despite the apparent popularity of the premise, my expectations are actually quite low. Even if the production company does manage to cast rising star Ryan Reynolds in the temporary transvestite role as planned.

Entertainment, like life, can be pretty confusing. Marketing, whether it be televised commercials, print ads and posters, or viral campaigns, is so pervasive that a movie's basic premise and characters can be overwhelmingly familiar long before you even see the movie in question. Hell, one time I watched thirty minutes of "The Fisher King" thinking it was "Mrs. Doubtfire" before I realized that Robin Williams was playing a crazy drifter, not a cross-dressing divorcee. You can see how that would be an easy mistake to make, right?
This week, we're all excited. "Where the Wild Things Are", the Spike Jonze-directed live-action riff on the beloved children's book by Maurice Sendak, is finally hitting theaters. Finally! Let's not lose our heads though. Let's not let our excitement for "Where the Wild Things Are" lead us into watching other movies that we might easily confuse it with. For example, we must »

Does anyone else think it ironic that Working Title won the bidding war on a feature that is, in essence, working on its title? According to Variety, the company threw down a high six figures to beat out Original Film and New Regency, clinching the rights to a star vehicle that will be written by Allan Loeb and starring Ryan Reynolds…in drag. The of-yet-unnamed project will feature Reynolds dressing as a woman to become BFFs with his ex and win her back. More on the project after the jump.
Loeb is probably most well known for writing “21,” but his name has been thrown around more lately in connection with “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps.” And in terms of Reynolds, it’s no surprise Working Title was willing to throw down so much dough–the man’s become a hot commodity since the successes of “The Proposal” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine, »

-- Darren Aronofsky may be busy with "Black Swan" -- which sounds a lot like "Fight Club" with ballerinas to me -- but he's going to need something more grounded as a follow-up to 2008's Oscar-nominated "The Wrestler." And here it is. The filmmaker has partnered with Time Inc. Studios and Xyz Films to direct/produce an "indie heist thriller" based on the 2006 robbery of the Securitas Depot in Tonbridge, England, in which thieves made off with roughly $85 million. (Variety)
-- Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to Lucy Prebble's stage play "Enron," which chronicles the high-profile fall of the Texas energy concern. Prebble will adapt her script for film and Laura Ziskin will produce, though no additional cast or crew players have yet been revealed. (Variety)

A second longer teaser trailer for Fox's Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has arrived. It apparently was found on the Wolverine DVD and it's the teaser they should've played in front of Harry Potter. If you remember back during the summer, this first teaser trailer was attached to Half-Blood Prince, and because it was so Potter-like and vague, it left audiences confused, especially because not that many people are familiar with this series of books. However, I'll admit that I'm now much more curious, enough to call it worth watching. I'm not a fan of director Chris Columbus, but this looks like it'll be fun? Remember all of those funny bones you broke while watching Big Momma’s House 2? Prepare for more pain, as Fox has now hired a writer to make the glorious saga of an undercover cop who dresses up as an old woman a complete trilogy.
Randi Mayem Singer, a co-scripter of Mrs. Doubtfire, has been assigned to pen the project. Information about the synopsis of the film is being kept secret.
Apparently, the Big Momma films were uh … big business. Big Momma’s House in 2000 grossed $174 million worldwide, while the second one from 2006 earned $138 million. Perhaps “Big Momma” Martin Lawrence will get a fat paycheck for round three?
David Friendly and New Regency will produce.
Here’s my dream: somehow this becomes a Tyler Perry project. And with that, Perry turns it into a Madea project, but one that is strictly Madea – no dramatic subplots. Anyone who has seen even one »

Martin Lawrence waddling around in a fat suit in Big Momma's House was a cheap, inferior rip-off of Robin Williams and his antics in Mrs. Doubtfire. And we know that lately (and always?) Hollywood has been cranking out sequel after remake after sequel, completely shirking any whiff of originality. But we probably have to give the studios some credit: at least they're being blatantly transparent about it.
Cinema Blend reports that 20th Century Fox made an announcement that not only will there be a Big Momma's House 3, but the studio is hiring the very same screenwriter who penned Mrs. Doubtfire! Wow, and we thought they were at least trying to act like the whole thing wasn't a rip-off.
Yes it's true: Randi Mayem Singer will give us the third installment of latex-laced mediocrity. No word yet on a director or any cast members, although it would be hard to imagine they'd make it without Lawrence. »

Good news Martin Lawrence fan, he’s making a comeback. First a writer was hired for Bad Boys 3 and now Lawrence is set to return for another threequel, the highly-anticipated Big Momma’s House 3.
Fox has hired Randi Mayem Singer to write the script, whose silver screen credits only include Mrs. Doubtfire and the upcoming comedy from my personal favorite actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson titled Tooth Fairy.
Wow, the studio brought in the heavy hitter for this one. It makes perfect sense too because when you’re developing the third movie in a man-in-drag trilogy, you want the very best in men-dressed-as-women comedies. That’s Mr. Singer.
What sort of wacky hijinks will the cross-dressing FBI agent get into this time! Well, unfortunately we don’t know because Fox is keeping this gem top secret for the time being. Locked in the vault with the plot to the third Batman and the Avengers. »

That unexplained happy feeling you felt when you woke up this morning, that little bit of blazing sunshine in your soul that wasn't there the night before, that smile on your face that shouldn't be there. It has an explanation now. Big Momma's House 2 finally has a sequel. Finally. Has. A. Sequel. According to Variety, Fox has hired Randi Mayem Singer from The Tooth Fairy and Mrs. Doubtfire fame to write Big Momma's House 3 as a sequel to the sequel that was once the third highest-grossing January release of all time (and is now the 6th highest). There's no word yet on whether Martin Lawrence is back again, but he has to be right? There's no way anyone could take his emotionally powerful fat-suit performance and turn it into their own. Maybe Don Cheadle, but no one else. What do you think? »

I'll be damned if this isn't the best news I've heard all day (and also the only news I've heard all day). Hot on the heels of an announcement about Bad Boys 3 [1] heading into the early stages of development, we now have another Martin Lawrence threequel to contend with: Big Momma's House 3! According to Variety [2], Fox has hired Randi Mayem Singer to write a script for the film. Singer previously wrote the Robin Williams comedy classic Mrs. Doubtfire, and more recently, the upcoming Tooth Fairy starring The Rock. Story details are being kept "under wraps", which basically means, "We have no idea what the movie will be about, and why do you even care?" I guess we are to assume that Martin Lawrence will reprise his role as the undercover FBI agent in a fat suit, which, clearly, is exciting news. Personally I was kinda hoping for Black Knight 2, but »
