Don't watch it unless you loved the book, 22 February 2001
7/10

I really enjoyed this movie, though I was surprised to see the critics pan it as being boring. It's not a movie of high action, and much of the drama comes from watching two characters hide their strong feelings for each other. Perhaps the movie isn't universally loved because they're just too good at what they do.

I read the book _Ethan Frome_ in high school, and the movie perfectly recreates the quiet and austerity of the New England setting. The environment becomes one of the characters in the film, similar to the role it plays in the novel.

If you think that a movie needs to have a torrid sex scene or a few explosions to be good, don't even go within the same zip code as this movie. If you loved the book, then you will love the movie for the very same reasons.
