Nine Movie Parties We'd Like to Crash

31 December 2009 1:16 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Parties get a lousy rap in movies. Really, how often do you get to see characters having unfettered fun? More often, they're moping and feeling alienated (see "Garden State") or wasted out of their minds (see "Kids") or feeling let down (see "Swingers") or unearthing dark, long-kept family or friendship secrets (see "The Celebration").

Parties are cinematic shorthand for decadence and overindulgence -- and why does that always have to be so bad? In honor of tonight's celebrations of the year to come, here are a few film parties we'd actually like to attend.

"Dazed and Confused" (1993)

Directed by Richard Linklater

Like, I'm guessing, many of you, I had warm, fuzzy feelings toward Austin long before ever getting to go there (and in the dozen or so trips since, it has yet to disappoint), all thanks to Richard Linklater's landmark high school movie. "All I'm saying is that if »

Me and Orson Welles

Me and Orson Welles

Directed by: Richard Linklater

Cast: Zac Efron, Christian McKay, Claire Danes

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: December 11, 2009 (limited)

Plot: A young wannabe actor (Efron) is taken under the wing of directing genius Orson Welles (McKay) as he works with his Mercury Players theatre company to revolutionize Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” in 1937.

Who’S It For? Fans of Welles will likely cherish this wonderful impersonation even more so than
squads of slightly grown up Efron fans who experiment with the High School Musical actor’s attempt at something a bit different. The film isn’t exclusive to either of these groups, as its comedy reaches past those who are aware of Welles’ quirks or Efron’s looks.

Expectations: How would the expected drama with Efron balance with the true story of Welles’ magnificence? Would the legend’s impersonator, McKay, be able to effectively duplicate »

From director Richard Linklater (School Of Rock, Dazed And Confused), Me And Orson Welles tells the semi-true story of the Mercury Theater’s unconventional production of William Shakespeare’s Caesar, directed by and starring a young Orson Welles – portrayed pitch-perfectly by regarded thespian turned actor Christian McKay. Enter young Richard – Zac Efron in his first grown-up role – a high school student that dreams of something bigger. Welles instantly takes a liking to the boy, casting him in the play. But Richard soon learns why Welles, even his younger years, has the notorious reputation and overbearing presence he does. Because he is Orson Welles, of course!

'I'm not like Orson Welles. I'm a quiet director'

2 December 2009 6:58 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The indie film-maker talks about his new film Me and Orson Welles, starring Zac Efron

In his later years Orson Welles made wine and beer commercials. He acted in The Muppet Movie and Magnum Pi and narrated a documentary about Bugs Bunny. Sometimes he gave lectures, too, shambling into the half-empty town-halls of middle America to breathlessly introduce himself as a film director, writer and actor; a magician, designer and painter. Then his eyes would flick across the rows of empty seats. "Isn't it strange," he said, "that there are so many of me and so few of you?"

It was Welles's fate to burn too brightly, too quickly. He was a man who could be everything except a cog in the Hollywood machine; an artist whose precocity would prove his undoing. He was a stage star in his teens and the creator of Citizen Kane at the age of 25. After that, »

Why did Orlando Bloom, Miranda Kerr do T-Day in Morocco? Not for couscous

29 November 2009 8:45 AM, PST | Zap2It - The Dish Rag | See recent Zap2It - The Dish Rag news »

Orlando Bloom, his sweet cheeks Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr, and other A-list celebs including Jennifer Aniston, Adrien BrodySalma Hayek and Gwyneth Paltrow, spent their Thanksgiving in Morocco.

Because nothing says Thanksgiving like lamb, couscous and kaab el ghazal (gazelles' horns).

Why were they really so far from home on a family-centered holiday?According to my sources, they were all very well-paid to attend the grand reopening of the luxury La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakesh.

And they all got dressed up for an international red carpet appearance. Aniston wore a Celine gown, Salma wowed the crowd in Gucc.

Along with Aniston, they were all flying solo. Paltrow was sans husband Chris Martin and told People she left her kids in London and Salma left her daughter Valentina in Paris with husband Francois-Henri Pinault.

In Hollywood, where even B-listers are routinely paid $10-$20 grand (and up) to attend grand openings, »

Richard Linklater on Zac Efron, Child Actors, and His Mysterious 12-Year Drama

25 November 2009 9:40 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Though Miramax scuttled his next project, Liars (A to E), it's not hard to imagine Richard Linklater will bounce back -- the tricky part is picturing just what he'll do next. Over his career, the Austin-based filmmaker has thrown his audience a few laid-back curveballs, moving from low-budget films like Slacker and Dazed and Confused to studio comedies like School of Rock and Bad News Bears. Linklater's newest film is Me and Orson Welles, and it may be his most unlikely yet: a period comedy starring Zac Efron, Claire Danes, and new find Christian McKay as Welles.

Still, despite Efron's star wattage, Linklater admits that getting the film into theaters was no easy task. In an interview Movieline conducted with the director last week, he opened up about those difficulties and talked extensively about an even more challenging project: the secretive drama he's been filming every year for the last eight years. »

Richard Linklater Talks Me and Orson Welles and "Spiritual" Sequel to Dazed and Confused

25 November 2009 1:16 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

To call Richard Linklater an eclectic director would be an understatement. Starting with the low-budget indie Slacker, Linklater moved on to the stoner comedy Dazed and Confused before hitting it big with School of Rock and Bad News Bears.

Up next for the director is another independently financed project, Me and Orson Welles, based on the novel by Robert Kaplow about a teenager who lands a role in Orson Welles' production of Julius Ceasar. The movie stars teen heartthrob Zac Efron as the young actor and newcomer Christian McKay as Welles. The movie may seem a strange fit for someone like Linklater to direct, but in an interview with ComingSoon, Linklater says he doesn't find his resume odd at all. I think if there's a commonality [between movies] maybe it's sort of the tone or the acting or something, but I dunno. I'm lucky I get to work on different genres, »

Theatrical Review: Me And Orson Welles

24 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

Rating: 8/10

Writer: Holly Gent Palmo & Vincent Palmo Jr. (screenplay), Robert Kaplow (novel)

Director: Richard Linklater

Cast: Zac Efron, Christian McKay, Claire Danes, Ben Chaplin

Studio: Freestyle

Richard Linklater’s directing resume includes the stoner coming of age comedy Dazed And Confused, a pointed attack at the practices of the fast food industry in Fast Food Nation, as well as Before Sunrise, a film about two people that spend a short but very romantic time together. You also get the based-on-a-true-story bank robber movie, The Newton Boys, and a pretty funny remake of Bad News Bears. These are not all of Linklater’s films, but I think you get the idea – the guy likes to jump genres and mood, and tends to have success at it. Of course, he has had few misfires in his career, but overall, a respectable resume.

Recreating "New Moon": What I Watched Instead

24 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

So New Moon made over $140 million this past weekend. I wish I can say that I'm surprised, but really, who would be? It's Twilight. Everybody should've expected it to do gangbusters.

You might have noticed that we don't have a review for it... yet. There's a reason for that. I went to a screening of it last Wednesday, but never made it into the theater, after my stubborn self encountered a problem passing the security check. Nothing too scandalous, I didn't bite anybody—that night, anyway—but I scuttled on home skipping out on my date with the hot new reel on the block. So what did I do instead?

I could have seen the movie during the weekend, of course. But hey, it was busy breaking three different box office records: opening day (beating The Dark Knight), midnight showing (beating Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and November opening »

It's another big holiday weekend with plenty of new releases to consider following your Thanksgiving feast this Thursday (and following your subsequent leftovers feasts through Sunday). In the same way that many Americans prefer alternatives to the traditional turkey and stuffing dinner on the day of gratitude, many moviegoers want something other than a studio tentpole release the day after Thanksgiving. Really, why would you want a popcorn movie when you're still full from the night before?

There are a couple of limited release options this week, including an important studio film getting a surprisingly soft opening, to appease such a film diet. Check these films out if you want something different as or additional to your main course this weekend:

The Mercury Theatre was founded by Welles and Houseman earlier in the same year after the duo resigned from the Federal Theatre. In 1938, the Mercury Theatre evolved into The Mercury Theatre on the Air – a radio series that included the most infamous and influential radio broadcasts of all time: The War of the Worlds (broadcast on October 30, 1938). Welles and Houseman then moved to Hollywood and made Citizen Kane. New York — "Me and Orson Welles," the story of a young man's Broadway debut, is both familiar territory and completely foreign for Zac Efron. The "High School Musical" films have seen the 22-year-old star take to the stage for theatrical performances, but "Orson Welles" is an entirely different beast, as Efron's character joins a 1930s-era production of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" being directed by a future titan of American cinema.

On Monday at the film's red carpet premiere in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, Efron told MTV News that no matter what type of role he finds himself in, he always suffers through nervous energy — and that's part of the appeal of his profession.

Over a decade ago, Claire Danes co-starred with one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood: Leonardo DiCaprio in "Romeo + Juliet." Her latest onscreen love interest is, once again, one of the biggest young stars in Hollywood: Zac Efron, with whom Danes stars in the upcoming period piece, "Me and Orson Welles."

Efron recently said that the actor whose career he most admires is in fact DiCaprio's, so when MTV News had a chance to speak with Danes on the "Orson Welles" red carpet Monday night, we wanted to know if she saw any similarities between the two leading men.

"They're obviously both very gifted," she told us. "They're both charismatic and gorgeous."

Free Flick of the Day: The Doom Generation

20 November 2009 3:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The '90s were a good time to be a teen -- especially if you were itching for more than just the mainstream. Nestled between the John Hughes '80s and the bubbly Disney '00s, the '90s were a time when teen films thrived in tunes-led rebellion. It wasn't all about spunky mainstream music marketing and bubbly personalities. Scores and strangeness got to go a little wild, and Gregg Araki ran with that idea when he made The Doom Generation.

Dubbed Araki's "heterosexual movie," the film starred then-newcomer Rose McGowan as Amy Blue, a tough-as-nails, filthy-mouthed, self-proclaimed virgin in love with one Jordan White (James Duval). Their rather mundane lives are thrown through the ringer when they help out a strange boy named Xavier (Johnathan Schaech), who leads them through an insane road trip of unintended violence. A trip, mind you, that showcases a slew of names from »

'House' Star Olivia Wilde Says Filming 'Fix' Was 'Labor Of Love'

It was 2007 and Olivia Wilde had just been cast as a bisexual doc on "House," a juicy role on a hit show following a run on the short-lived NBC series "The Black Donnellys" and another bisexual turn on "The O.C." The job was a huge break for the actress — it would lead to a vastly raised public profile and the top spot in the Maxim Hot 100 — but the new work also came at a tricky time: She was about to start filming "Fix," a movie she couldn't exactly bail on considering her husband, Tao Ruspoli, was the director.

Exclusive: Richard Linklater on his 13 Year Film Project Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette

19 November 2009 8:09 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

While director Richard Linklater is having problems getting his “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused off the ground, that doesn’t mean he isn’t working.  In fact, last week he was filming some of his secret 13 year project with Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as a divorced couple.  Haven’t heard of the film yet? According to Linklater, good.

The reason I say that is when I spoke to Linklater during a roundtable interview a few days ago, he said he wished IMDb hadn’t listed the project.  Because now that it’s on the site, everyone is asking about a project that’s still being written and worked on.

But when I sat down to speak to him during my exclusive interview, when we finally got to talking about the project, he opened up a lot more than I expected him to.  Saying that, since I knew he »
