Birthday Suit: Dolph 'the biggest one' Lundgren

3 November 2009 7:06 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Thought I'd goof around with a little b-day series. In case it's yours! Could be shortlived. Or maybe it'll go on forever. You never know.

Hal Hartley , Paprika Steen and Charles Bronson

Today's Birthdays, November 3rd ...some of them at any rate. For those who are prone to celebrating the lives of the filmic and famous. And if you aren't, you're not having enough fun.

1921 Charles Bronson had a Death Wish, five of them actually, and he had them before "franchise" was a daily spoken word in movie discussions.1930 Lois Smith, sweet character actress, is now 79 years old. I once saw her in a train station. It's true. Weren't you shocked when she died on the first season of True Blood? I sure was.

1931 Monica Vitti, breathtaking Italian goddess

1953 Kate Capshaw aka Mrs. Spielberg. Did she sing or was she dubbed for that awesome "Anything Goes" opening number in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom »

Dolph Lundgren on The Expendables Sequel and More!

The legendary action star tells all about Sylvester Stallone's magnum opus

Dolph Lundgren is one of the many "tough guy" icons that is set to appear in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action extravaganza The Expendables. Next week, he has his own film coming out that he wrote and directed called Command Performance. And boy, is it a doozey! True fans of the action genre won't want to miss this story of a rock and roll drummer named Joe who battles terrorists at a Russian pop venue. It is one of the funnest movies of 2009, and a blast of fresh air for those tired of the many wimpy actors currently ruling our Cineplex scene. We recently caught up with Dolph on the streets of Los Angeles to chat with him about his latest project. You can read all about Command Performance in our DVD section. Dolph Lundgren Gives One Hell of a Command Performance!

29 October 2009 7:42 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The action star directs this one-of-a-kind rock and roll hostage thriller

Dolph Lundgren has directed, maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly one of the coolest, strangest, funniest fuck-em-up hostage thrillers seen in (at least) the last five years. Not one to take himself or his image too seriously, Command Performance is a tour de force that proves the legendary muscle man (who first made his appearance known in Rocky IV as Russian boxer Ivan Drago) still has what it takes to decimate a room full of heavily armed bad guys. Its no lie when I say Command Performance is hands down the most fun you'll have with any action movie being released this year. It earns 2009's Mega-Awesome Achievement Award simply for having the balls to pull off many scenes like the one below:

Exclusive: Dolph Lundgren Gives Us a Special ‘Command Performance’

14 October 2009 8:51 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Yesterday we rocked you with an Expendables promo trailer that included the awesome badass that is Dolph Lundgren. Just last week, as part of our Fantastic Fest coverage, Brian Salisbury raved about Dolph in his Universal Soldier: A New Beginning review. We've interviewed the man, we've applauded his early work and we've interviewed him some more. It is safe to say that without Dolph Lundgren, we probably wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. Luckily, he exists. And he's got a new movie in the works, Command Performance. And to help get the word out about this new flick, in which Dolph plays a drummer who beats some ass to save a hot chick, we've offered to host an exclusive clip. But that's not all. In addition to the clip, Dolph was kind enough to give us a little custom intro, just for the readers of Film School Rejects. Check it out below. Yep »

Fantastic Fest Review: Universal Soldier: A New Beginning

5 October 2009 8:44 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Tim League, owner of the Alamo Drafthouse and co-founder of Fantastic Fest, is a giant child.  I don't mean that as a disparagement; quite the contrary.  What I love about Tim is that he has never lost a wild, unrestrained passion for film and for anything that could be considered "badass".  He has no concept of pretension or egotism.  This is the guy who takes all the filmmakers visiting for Fantastic Fest to a freaking shooting range!  I never tire of the image of Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura brandishing a shotgun with little to no idea how to use it.  Welcome to America buddy.  And who else but Tim would think it a good idea to use a flame-thrower to sear meat in a packed movie theater?  Come on!  While many others ran the gamut from severe disappointment to utter rage at the announcement that Universal Soldier: A New Beginning would be the final Fantastic »

Fantastic Fest Interview: Dolph Lundgren from 'Universal Soldier: A New Beginning'

Dolph Lundgren with the Alamo Drafthouse's Lyrae Anderson

Dolph Lundgren isn't the first name that springs to mind when you think "chemical engineer," is it? You might be surprised to know that the guy who has made a career out of playing muscular bad dudes in movies has a masters in that field from the University of Sydney, and he was also a Fulbright scholar to MIT. However, he dropped out after two weeks to pursue acting full time, and that's left us with his performances in everything from Rocky IV to The Punisher to Universal Soldier.

He'll also be going toe to toe with Sylvester Stallone once more in The Expendables, but we found him returning to his Universal Soldier roots at Fantastic Fest in Austin with a sneak peek at Universal Soldier: A New Beginning. Fantastic Fest Day Eight: Silat, Brains, and Dolph Lundgren

3 October 2009 8:52 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Fantastic Fest came to a close on Day Eight, and it was most definitely with a bang, and not a whimper. In fact, the final Secret Screening provided bangs both onscreen and off, and then the evening ended with a vampire-themed closing party. They even supplied sangria in blood bags, so it looked like you were chugging some b-negative instead of a fruity wine beverage. The staff were dressed up with scars, blood, and fangs, and attendees showed up in costume as well. Highlights included The Count from Sesame Street and a bevy of female bloodsuckers.

But, Day Eight also meant movies, and plenty of ‘em. There were screenings all day, including a sneak peek at the vampire flick Daybreakers from Lionsgate. Even after the festival had ended and people were partying, non-festival attenders lined up for a midnight screening of Paranormal Activity. Heat lightning lit up the sky around Austin, »

'Rambo' on the 'Savage Hunt' for Pure Rage

8 September 2009 9:27 AM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Monster news (pun intended) hit AICN this morning as they received (and posted) a voicemail from Sylvester Stallone who clarified the villain in his forthcoming fifth Rambo film, entitled Rambo: The Savage Hunt. While it was originally reported there would be super soldiers like in Universal Soldier, Stallone clarifies, "It's actually a feral beast, a thing, it's this an amalgamation of fury and intelligence and pure unadulterated rage. Its before men became human." He continues, "[It's] Your worst nightmare... you're battling your primitive self." It looks like we'll have a reason to cover this one. Seriously though, how awesome will this be if it's as bloody as the fourth Rambo? Bring It! »

'Rambo V: The Savage Hunt' To Pit 'Feral Beast' Against Sylvester Stallone... But Why?

8 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

May as well get it out of the way at the outset: I am so not on board with this idea. The "Rambo" series is about over-the-top action and outlandish military plots, but as silly as the happenings get they always stay at least Somewhat grounded in reality. Putting in a "Predator"-esque sci-fi twist... I'm just not feeling it.

Perhaps I should explain. Over the weekend, Ain't It Cool News revealed new details about the next "Rambo" feature, which was confirmed in name only at the beginning of last week. AICN's Harry Knowles followed up on the news by speaking with series leading man Sylvester Stallone, who was only to happy to share the rough story arc for "Rambo V: The Savage Hunt." And that's where things get kinda funky.

The idea is to bring Sly's aging Vietnam vet back to United States -- specifically, the forests of the »

Official Synopsis for Rambo 5 (And What It’s Based On)

7 September 2009 7:24 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

For our next installment of ‘Rambo 5 Week’ - this is the fourth update on the project in the last 8 days - we have for you the (crazy) official synopsis for Rambo V: The Savage Hunt.

Here’s the story so far: Last Monday we reported that Rambo 5 was given the green light and it would start production in the spring. The story would apparently follow John along the U.S.-Mexico border as he annihilates drug lords in an attempt to rescue a kidnapped daughter.

A few days later, Harry at Ain’t It Cool News spoke with Rambo himself, Sylvester Stallone, and found out that what we heard about the story wasn’t accurate. The fifth installment would instead follow the aging warrior in the Pacific Midwest, back where he originated, where he’d lead a black ops team to take down some sort of supersoldier(s) born out »

Stallone Says Rambo 5 Will Feature "Your Worst Nightmare"

7 September 2009 6:32 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It was only announced in August that Sylvester Stallone would be returning to star in and direct the fifth installment in the Rambo franchise, so when Stallone recently revealed the plot had changed from rescuing a girl from human traffickers to preventing the creation of super-soldiers, the Internet buzzed with rumors and speculation about what this means for the future of the franchise.

So many comparisons to the plot of the 1992 action movie starring Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Universal Soldier, were made that apparently even Stallone could feel the backlash because he picked up the phone to try to set the record straight. In a recent voice message, Stallone said:

It's not a Universal Soldier, it's not me fighting some super-soldier, it's actually a feral beast. It's a thing, it's this amalgamation of fury and intelligence and pure unadulterated rage. It's before men became human. This is when they were still inhuman. »

Rambo V Is A Savage Hunt

6 September 2009 11:20 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A week ago we brought you the report from all the trades that Rambo 5 had been greenlit by Nu Image / Millennium, and that the story would be a Taken-like rescue mission set on the Mexican border. It turns out only half that story is correct, as Sylvester Stallone explained to Harry Knowles at the awesome Ain't It Cool. The true plot, according to Sly, is much stranger, borderline sci-fi territory for the lunkish Vietnam vet. Set back in the Pacific Northwest where the whole saga began, it involves a secret Us military installation where experiments are being carried out on elite soldiers, with a view to enhancing their primal savagery. This, needless to say, Ends Badly, and one John Rambo is brought in with a squad to shut the place down.Click the image above for a larger version on AintItCoolNewsNow, when you hear about genetically enhanced super-soldiers, you may immediately think of Universal Soldier, »

Stallone Clears Up Rambo 5 Confusion [Updated]

5 September 2009 10:31 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last night, we reported on breaking news for the next installment of the Rambo franchise, which centered on the story of Rambo 5 in addition to its title and first teaser poster. From what we heard, the idea for the fifth installment seemed a little odd and it resulted in some confusion and mixed reaction. This provoked Sylvester Stallone himself to quickly address the confusion and explain himself what the film’s story is (and is not) about.

Originally, I had this latest news written in as a hefty-sized update to last night’s post but I wanted to expand on it, now that we have a more concrete concept of Rambo 5’s plot.

Sly read the reader feedback to the news last night on several sites that over-emphasized the science-fiction aspects of the story for Rambo V, so he left a message with Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News, »

Has ‘Rambo 5′ Nuked The Shark By Adding A Sci-Fi Plot?

5 September 2009 2:39 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I know there are naysayers among you who think the headline above is redundant, who think Sylvester Stallone's Rambo series has been a joke since the first sequel. We can all agree that First Blood is a damn fine film and that the two sequels that followed are rubbish, but last year's Rambo? That movie kicked all kinds of ass, and it did so with bloody style and glee. It also made money which is why a fifth film in the franchise was predictably greenlit as well. Variety recently ran a story claiming that the film's plot centered around a kidnapping on the Us/Mexican border and John Rambo's mission to save the girl while killing truck-loads of drug lords and Mexicans. But now a new plot has surfaced, and it comes straight from the horse's mouth... see Stallone's Rocky nickname was "The Italian Stallion"... ah screw it, by way of Harry Knowles and AICN. Harry »

New 'Rambo V' Story Details and Working Title

5 September 2009 11:01 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Harry Knowles talked to Sylvester Stallone to get a little clarity on what Rambo V is all about. The cinquel was officially announced this past week after months and months of rumors. But even though the announcement of the upcoming movie was correct, Stallone says the story is completely different than what has been reported.

Instead of of a border war, Stallone seems to indicate that this is a lot more like, say, Universal Soldier (Knowles compares the plot to Predator). The story goes that Rambo is back in the Pacific Northwest, where the government has been training perfect killing machines. As it tends to, the military project goes haywire, and the perfect killing machines now have to be stopped, so in comes Rambo.

Actually, now that I think about it, that's Wolverine, too. »

3 New Posters for 2012

28 August 2009 3:16 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

If there's one thing Roland Emmerich does very well, it's disaster movies... with awesome special effects thrown in! He's previously brought us, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and I've just found out back in 1992, he did Universal Soldier (which I thought was awesome when I was 12!).

His latest movie is in the form of '2012' and stars John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Oliver Platt. It's another 'end of the world' which according to IMDb is 'about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors'.

Three new posters for the movie have been released today which you can see after the jump. 2012 is scheduled for release in the UK 13th November.

The Eagle Path Has Landed

20 July 2009 10:58 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

There are some really good Jean-Claude Van Damme films. No, there are. Hard Target. Universal Soldier. Kim Newman likes Sudden Death. Earlier this year, the muscles from Brussels had a bit of a critical renaissance. And now here’s the trailer for The Eagle Path, like Jcvd never happened. If it undoes that sterling work however, Jc only has himself to blame, since The Eagle Path is Van Damme’s second directorial outing. Or, as Wikipedia currently has it, “Jean Claude is the Director an Writer of the mvoie an he also Director of the movie called the Quest that with he star in that movie in 1996”. Jc is also credited as editor, with his father Eugene producing, and children Kristopher and Bianca co-starring. The cleverest thing about the trailer is the way it mirrors the trajectory of most Jc movies, in that it’s quite boring for the first two thirds, »
