Film School 101: Protagonists

1 November 2009 4:57 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

First off I need to apologize for the tardiness of this entry.  I was infected with the swine pandemic and was unable to do anything but utter “Bbbbraaaiiinsssss…” feebly from my bed.  Now I’m up and about again, so here we go.

One of the first things to do when making your movie is figure out who your main character is going to be.  Now, you may pick your plot first and then figure what kind of protagonist you want or you may pick your characters and write about what they do – it all depends on your style of writing.  In either case, understanding your protagonist(s) is very important since these are the people whom the plot revolves around, who we will come to know and love and who we will follow for the next 120 minutes.  They will be our tour guides through your movie so you have »

Paramount Adapting Techno Thriller Daemon

20 May 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We walk a fine line at Dread Central as far as deciding what's horror, what's sci-fi, and what's enough of a hybrid to warrant our covering it. Considering the novel Daemon bills itself as "a harrowing journey through the dark crawl spaces of the modern world," we thought its film adaptation merits at least a mention.

Variety compares the story to WarGames in its "exploration of themes of man vs. machine". Walter Parkes (who coincidentally wrote 1983's WarGames and has only one other feature script credit, 1992's Sneakers) and David Digilio (creator of the much too short-lived TV series "Traveler") will pen the script for Paramount Pictures.

The official Daemon website provides the following synopsis:

It all begins when one man's obituary appears online. . .

Matthew Sobol was a legendary computer game designer — the architect behind half a dozen popular online games. His premature death from brain cancer depressed both gamers »

Martin Scorsese to helm Sinatra biopic for Universal. Could DiCaprio star?

14 May 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Martin Scorsese will direct "Sinatra" which Universal and Mandalay's Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman have been developing for the last two years while they worked to secure life and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises.   Phil Alden Robinson ("Sneakers," "Field of Dreams," "All of Me") is writing the screenplay. No actor is as yet attached to star although Schulman did say that Leonardo DiCaprio is an obvious candidate as he has become Scorsese's go-to actor over the past decade with roles in "Gangs of New York," "The Aviator," "The Departed" and the upcoming "Shutter Island."   Sinatra's last film was the documentary "Shine a Light." The helmer is also in post-production phase on the "Untitled George Harrison Documentary" which was produced through Sikelia Productions, Spitfire Pictures and Glove Street Productions. »

Martin Scorsese will do it his way on Frank Sinatra biopic

14 May 2009 4:49 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

It had to happen. There has never been a full scale big-screen biopic film about Frank Sinatra, who was a man not only of monumental fame and infamy but also of great public intrigue - a combination that is prime material for Hollywood - and the reason that a film has never been made is that the project has been unofficially reserved for Martin Scorsese ever since it became a possibility. Martin Scorsese seems to be the only logical choice, and is preferred by Sinatra’s estate and his daughter, to make an honest and exploratory film about Ol’ Blue Eyes. Yesterday, it was announced that at long last Scorsese will be developing the film from a screenplay by Oscar-nominated writer Phil Alden Robinson (”Field of Dreams”, “Sneakers”), who has spent over a year referencing 30,000+ pages of research about Sinatra.

Mandalay Pictures President Cathy Shulman, spoke about the film yesterday saying, »

Martin Scorsese Helming Frank Sinatra Biopic

13 May 2009 10:03 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Martin Scorsese has signed on to direct and produce Sinatra, a biopic of the legendary performer that Universal and Mandalay Pictures are developing. Phil Alden Robinson (Sneakers, Field of Dreams) is writing the screenplay. Universal and Mandalay’s Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman have been quietly developing the project for two years while they worked feverishly to secure the life and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises — a joint venture of the Sinatra Estate and Warner Music Group. Sinatra was born in Hoboken, N.J., and raised during the Depression; he built a singing career that weathered many changes in popular culture, all the while racking up 31 gold records and countless other honors. He also had a successful career as an actor, earning an Oscar for 1953's From Here to Eternity. His personal life was just as eventful. He suffered from depression, was alleged to have connections to organized crime »

Discuss: Who Would You Hire to Play Sinatra?

13 May 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It's that point in the day where I rejoice in the fact that Martin Scorsese is announcing another project. I can't really hide the fact that I love pretty everything the guy makes. Plus, I got to run into him in the lobby during the Oscars a few years ago, and he looks exactly like a muppet. He's short, has bushy eyebrows, and Frank Oz's hand is up his ass. So of course I'm a little bit jazzed that the iconic director is busting out the big guns for a biopic of Frank Sinatra. Such a perfect combination. Although, part of me is a little scared that we'll be seeing go-to actor Leonardo DiCaprio as The Chairman of the Board. The press release has a lot of verbal glad-handing of Scorsese's work by members of Mandalay (where Universal acquired the project from) and members of the Sinatra estate - who are giving their full blessing behind »

Martin Scorsese Directing Biopic Sinatra -- Looking into Ol' Blue Eyes

13 May 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Matt Goldberg Variety is reporting that Martin Scorsese is directing a biopic based on the life of Frank Sinatra called, appropriately, "Sinatra". This news always goes down smooth because it's the kind of film we expect from Scorsese. It will be his fifth biopic (sixth if you count "The Last Temptation of Christ"), it's an Italian-American director exploring the life of an Italian-American singer and actor, and Sinatra was a legend in his own time, much like the subject of Scorsese's most recent biopic, Howard Hughes in "The Aviator". One day, I would really like Scorsese to just blow all of our minds and say "I'm directing the next 'Transformers' movie." The script is being developed by Phil Alden Robinson ("Sneakers", "Field of Dreams") and since it would kill Variety to actually call someone and make an ... »
