I'm not as disappointed with this movie as the other reviewer, but it does fall short of what it could have been given the ability of the performers involved. Diane Keaton is a splendid actor, arguably the best contemporary female actor, and Ed Harris is underrated and very capable. And they really do work off each other very well here. But there is no hard edge to the script and the protagonists could have been conducting a romance amid the Royal Horticultural Association's general elections rather than on the cutting edge of the world's most powerful job - the president of the United States of America. Sure, Keaton's character has a dodgy incident in her past which may or may not compromise Ed Harris' chances at the Presidency, but I found it all a bit sanitized and undergraduate, especially now that we know what presidents are capable of getting up to in the Oval Office. And I would have thought Ed Harris' character's bachelor status would have been more likely to raise eyebrows amongst the wowsers and prudes than Diane Keaton's prankish indiscretion. Running Mates never quite makes it as a comedy or a drama: a dilemma of genre that The American President with Michael Douglas had no problem in overcoming. But it is a very pleasant diversion and watching Diane Keaton act is always rewarding. 71/2out of 10
