Doctor Who magazine readers name David Tennant as best doctor ever on the eve of his final episode
David Tennant, who will bow out as the 10th doctor in BBC1's Doctor Who tomorrow, is destined to be remembered as one of the best.
Tennant, who regenerates into his successor, Matt Smith, at the climax of the episode, in which he battles with the Master, was virtually unknown when he took over the role from Christopher Eccleston in 2005.
Within a year West Lothian-born Tennant was named the best doctor ever by readers of Doctor Who magazine, narrowly beating the viewers' previous all-time favourite, Tom Baker. It is a view most critics still hold today.
Tennant predicted today that viewers would be left heartbroken by the "brilliant" plot twists. "Coming to the final episodes, you [think] will these live up to one's hopes for what that finale will be?" he said.

Twice the glitz and glamour?

The Academy has decided to extend the shortlist for next year's best picture Oscar from five to 10 films. Is that a good idea? We can't quite decide…
It has to be a bad idea, doesn't it?
Ten best picture nominations in the Oscars instead of five? It's a cynical move by the Academy to boost viewing figures by opening the field to crowd-pleasers such as The Dark Knight, the exclusion of which last year caused fanboy outrage. The Oscars aren't exactly the gold standard where quality is concerned, but they remain the most important fixture in the movie calendar and the nomination process is not to be treated lightly. Now the list will be swamped with button-pressing blockbusters such as Avatar and Star Trek, which may deserve their box-office receipts but absolutely should not be honoured alongside the all-time greats: All About Eve! Lawrence of Arabia! The Godfather!

James Earl Jones has been breaking down barriers since the 1950s. As he prepares to star in an all-black Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, he tells Maddy Costa about his absent father, elderly sex – and why his stutter was his salvation
The septuagenarian walking slowly through the Novello theatre in London looks like an archetypal American tourist. Tall and wide, he wears a puffy gilet that makes him seem even bulkier, while a faded baseball cap shades his face. Yet this ordinary-looking man is one of America's pre-eminent actors: James Earl Jones. Over the last 50 years, he has won two Tony awards (playing a boxer in The Great White Hope, and for his role in August Wilson's Fences), an Oscar nomination (for the film of The Great White Hope), as well as multiple Emmy nominations and awards for his TV work.
You wouldn't know any of this to look at him,
